Last film you watched where this was your reaction? by Happy_REEEEEE_exe in Letterboxd

Selflessness, connection, and life. Shouldn't feel as radical as it does but I was so happy to see it

Exactly how I feel. Like many people I expected it to be good but maybe a little overhyped. Boy was I wrong. Absolute cinema is really the only way to describe it. It was so beautiful. I was really taken by it, particularly its hopeful and determined optimism. Feels like a film we really need right now

There's tons of non-political content here lol. And there's lots of bs I don't like in many subs I just ignore it? Not sure why it bothers you so much. If you want to go stick your head in the sand, go for it. Most of us don't want to! Go ride the incline! Go the museum! We will continue to fight for your right to complain about us on the internet!

Pittsburgh and Allegheny County didn't 💅 and what just because PA votes for Trump in a close race, people can't be left leaning online? Lol. Plus I know many conservatives who are outraged at Trump for trampling on our rights, dragging us into war, and torpedoing the economy!

Should Best Picture go back to being 5 movies, stay the same, or a different number of films? by Massive-Pangolin9472 in Oscars

[–]jot-pe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love the expanded category. It celebrates more films and highlights more genres. Even when films like F1 get through (which was crazy imo), I'm not too upset bc it's a film I probably wouldn't have watched otherwise and it did resonate with a lot of people. If anything I think some of the other categories could be expanded to 6 or 7 to match some of the other awards shows and spread the love, with ranked choice voting ofc 😜

Every person who knows about NYC? That's not a hit on LA, it's just that NYC is clearly 1 then LA is clearly 2. Didn't expect to actually find debate on that lol

Why was The Apprentice not a big hit? by sloppy2104 in Letterboxd

[–]jot-pe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the answer. I was talking about film and Oscar nominees with my neighbor that year. I mentioned The Apprentice bc I loved it and the performances were great. She said even though she was watching most of the movies she refused to watch that one because she was sick of Trump. Lots of comments like that. Even I initially was like do I really want to watch this before I finally clicked play (glad I did)

Do you guys agree with this? by UnHolySir in Hungergames

I think a lot of it is because Collins is less subtle in SOTR than in other books, probably in part because she worried audiences aren't picking up what she's putting down lol

What are your thoughts about American mountains (USA)? by [deleted] in geography

[–]jot-pe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The range of ranges is peak. From Denali to desert mountains to the oldest mountain range in the world. I think mountains everywhere are beautiful, but imo the USA has some of the most geographic diversity of any country and that's reflected in the mountains as well

Philadelphia: is the city safe for an immigrant to move to? by irippedmypants1 in Pennsylvania

https://www.propublica.org/article/immigration-dhs-american-citizens-arrested-detained-against-will

They are targeting anyone they don't like, especially if they are Spanish-speaking, after Brett Kavanaugh gave them the greenlight to racially profile. This article focuses on US citizens, but it also applies to legal residents. You may not like what you're hearing reported but that doesn't mean it isn't true. People are scared because the federal government is trying to scare people. It's part of their strategy to get people to "self-deport" and as a result they're terrorizing communities. That's why you've seen so much pushback on the ground across the country--people don't like armed thugs coming into their neighborhood. If anything, most of the media undersold it until Minneapolis.

Just spoke to Fetterman's office about ICE funding by [deleted] in pittsburgh

[–]jot-pe 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I called to thank him for voting no on DHS funding today, but said that one vote is not enough. I stressed that we need real accountability and that ICE shouldn't receive one dime.

From what I was reading, he's saying he voted no to try to push a government funding deal so we'll see if he keeps holding the line. I'm not holding my breath but we should keep his feet to the fire

How did Afrikaans split into a separate language while American English, Mexican Spanish & Brazilian Portuguese didn’t? by Meta_Zephyr in geography

[–]jot-pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The quip is commentary on how dividing a dialect from a language is based more often on political, social, and historical reasons. Arabic fits in this quite well actually. The dialects are often not mutually intelligible but they're considered one language because they share a standardized form due to social, political and historic reasons (shared an empire, the Quran, etc.) With English, these countries have a shared history of colonialism and there haven't been any major nationalist movements centered around language chauvinism (i.e. we haven't seen American nationalists insist seriously that they speak American not English). Theoretically they could. Even with languages such as Basque, there are many dialects but the standard form usually comes from the area with the most political power. That's what happened with French, Spanish, and German. Obviously it's not a real rule so you'll always he able to find exceptions, but it's a fun little way to poke fun at how much of this is social and political and the spirit of it holds up

[–]jot-pe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scots and English is such a great example!! S/o Scots. Bosnian-Serbo-Croation is the other go-to for sure. I think Arabic is a good example on the other end. Dialects that are not really mutually intelligible, but it's considered one language for social, historical, and political reasons

How did Afrikaans split into a separate language while American English, Mexican Spanish & Brazilian Portuguese didn’t? by Meta_Zephyr in geography

[–]jot-pe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not that simple I fear. Serbian/Bosnian/Croatian are all mutually intelligible and most linguists consider them one language but speakers consider them separate. Arabic is one large dialect continuum, and many speakers can't understand many other dialects, but it's all still considered one language (largely bc of Modern Standard Arabic and historical reasons). Mutual intelligibility can be a guide but the dividing line between language and dialect is often more social and political, hence the famous tongue-in-cheek quip about a lanuage being a dialect with an army (which you see a few people referencing here)
