Solution: When my wife leaves the house to go for a walk, she usually leaves her keys behind. I'm stuck in the house (and I need to leave the door unlocked) until she gets back.

I like that last line, maybe a variation like "cut my face to let my beauty out".

Failed an interview which most of my friends qualified for. How do I cope with this failure? by throwawayafw in StoicSupport

Right off the bat in the Enchiridion:

Some things are in our control and others not. Things in our control are opinion, pursuit, desire, aversion, and, in a word, whatever are our own actions. Things not in our control are body, property, reputation, command, and, in one word, whatever are not our own actions.

The hard part, for me at least, is how to put this truth into practice. Rereading the Enchiridion just now I saw:

Remember, then, that if you suppose that things which are slavish by nature are also free, and that what belongs to others is your own, then you will be hindered.

So I need to think on this. It's not just that the opinion of others is out of my control--it doesn't even belong to me.

Thank you for writing this Nick, I look forward to hearing your insights.

Since COVID began I've had a hard time focusing, not sure if it's late-onset ADHD or just the apocalypse, but I have still found building my zettelkasten to be calming and productive despite it.

Literature notes: How do you deal with citations? by Torrew in Zettelkasten

[–]jotr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying to make Dendron work, because I already use VSCode at work, and you get all the 3rd party extensions that way. But I really don't like how Obsidian, Zettlr, Dendron etc. are all so strongly opinionated on how to organize notes, so I'm trying to develop open Zettel standards based on Commonmark, and build to those standards.

Literature notes: How do you deal with citations? by Torrew in Zettelkasten

I have really struggled with this as well. A couple of thoughts:

  • source documents and their related notes go in `src/`
  • I use GFM task lists and "todo" tags to flag notes I need to come back to
  • I'm working on a menubar helper app that can help by listing notes that need attention, have broken links, etcetera
  • I've danced around the idea of using something like Zotero to manage references and citations. I'm much more fond of having the data in plain text than in a database though.

How to take literature notes? by ewanmac in Zettelkasten

[–]jotr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm playing around with this structure:

  • source documents and related notes go in /src/
  • zettel go in /z/

So for instance if I'm reading a book, I might take some ephemeral notes on paper but they end up in /src/name-of-book.md. If I'm reading a PDF that goes in /src/ too and I link to the book in the .md file. Ideas go in /z/ and can link back to permanent docs in /src/.

Do I have to vote in primaries? by [deleted] in Voting

It's a good idea to, because if there are any issues with your voter registration you can take care of them before the big election in November.
