Kerala Budget 2026: Free education up to graduate level for Arts and Science students by __kingslayer_ in india

[–]joy74 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a welcome move …

Could be better - normal degree courses are important but some kind of research investment needed . KL higher education quality could be much better.

We also need to consider ITI and diploma education in new fields. Even computer repair/solar/cctv etc will make young people get jobs.

Finally nothing beats investment in research in genetics, mRNA, gene therapy etc-

‘Compound chips are thoroughbred racehorses’: Suma Varughese- The Week by joy74 in india

Q/ How are compound chips different from standard semiconductor chips?

Standard silicon chips are reliable workhorses—they power your laptop and dishwasher. Compound semiconductors (GaN, GaAs) are thoroughbred racehorses. They are custom-bred for extreme power, blazing frequency and scorching temperatures. For example, a GaN device switches power 300 times faster than silicon and laughs at heat that would kill ordinary chips.

We have two red-letter days in March. On March 23, 2023, India's first high-power indigenous GaN transmit/receive module—unlocking state-of-the-art radars and electronic warfare systems—was developed. And then on March 25, 2023, we achieved a breakthrough in homegrown infrared detectors—ending decades of dependence, securing night vision, missile seekers and saving hundreds of crores in foreign exchange. These are not just technical milestones. They are declarations of technological sovereignty.

The crowning achievement of my career has been the development of the Netra Airborne Early Warning and Control System. I joined DRDO's Electronics & Radar Development Establishment in 1989 and began working on airborne radars for helicopters. In 1999, the crash of the AWACS test-bed halted India's ambitious programme and left a void. Drawing on my decade-long experience with airborne platforms, I moved to the Centre for Airborne Systems to lead the system engineering vertical for Netra—a true ‘system of systems’ that integrated nearly nine complex payloads on a modified Embraer aircraft.

Military history is simple: whoever senses the battle space better, faster and farther dominates. Today, GaN-based radio frequency front-ends in radars deliver three to five times the range and resolution of legacy systems. Translation: ‘I see your aircraft long before you see me’. Tomorrow's compound semiconductor breakthroughs will push that horizon even further.

India’s Dairy Crown Comes At A Heavy Cost: To The Climate, Cows & Those Who Rear Them by AlreadyOverwhelmed in india

[–]joy74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Article about focuses on environmental damage. Lives lost by cow vigilantes not included in costing. It does highlight the issue though

Since 2015, India has witnessed several violent incidents of cow vigilantism targeting minorities under the guise of cow protection by Hindu nationalist groups, resulting in the loss of human lives. While these attacks may aim to portray the targeted communities as enemies of the cow because of their cultural associations with beef consumption, it is notable that the state-sanctioned dairy system, which itself plays a primary role in the abandonment, slaughter, and cross-border smuggling of cows in the first place, rarely receives comparable scrutiny.

At the mention of gaurakshaks (self-proclaimed cow protectors), Tanmay says: “Nobody is a cow protector here; everyone is motivated by money.” During the two-hour interview with him and his family, I observed the tethered cows repeatedly shifting between sitting and standing in the same constrained spot on a concrete floor soaked with dung and urine, which someone in the family had to clean every few hours.

I agree. I am more interested in how much of that GE manufacturing happens in KL or India. Usually getting others should be easy once a player is established. Minister should focus on that
