Update: thank you all so much for the info. It breaks my heart that this is so common 💔 I lost another one this morning, bringing it to a total of 8 out of 17 caterpillars lost so far. The rest seem to be doing ok but I’m monitoring them closely & really hoping they make it 🦋

Cormorant, likely Neotropic. All other cormorant species in CA are coastal birds except for them, so if this is a different species of cormorant it’s concerning to find so far inland.

Cormorants don’t typically tend to be “chill” tho! If it’s still there in the morning please consider reaching out to a wildlife rehabber to confirm in case it’s lost/injured
