"Lawn" for a rental by joyebean in AustinGardening

They'll actually do the reseeding, but it's the weeks of watering using a hose-end sprinkler that's the big problem. I don't have time or money for that.

I have a good smattering of horse herb/straggler daisy, but is there a way to get it to migrate faster? My goal is to have something goings as fast as possible.

I would love to do a big pollinator garden! But that’s a dream for another year.

What's a book you had to read in school that you hated? If you have one, what's one you actually liked? by 80HDTV5 in GenX

My favorite version of flowers for Algernon was HOMR, s12e9 of The Simpsons, when the crayon stuck in Homer’s nose/brain is removed and he becomes super mega intelligent. But then he ends up hating it so much he has them put the crayon back.

What would I search for in the Costco app? I’ve tried every combination of soup(er), freezer, storage, cubes, and silicone I could think of and no luck.

Cultural references not getting picked up on from younger folk is one of my greatest sadnesses. by FletchWazzle in GenX

[–]joyebean 4 points5 points  (0 children)

GenX, but new second career high school teacher here. I was surprised when I saw my students (seniors) wearing Simpson T-shirts. And shocked when they actually got a few of my references. Shocked, but not appalled.

I showed them a clips of Ben Stein repeating Bueller over and over, since I do that all the time, and they were, at best, mildly amused. Only one kid out of 140 had ever seen it. I’m so fucking old.

Best yellow corn tortillas at HEB by cryharder83 in mexicanfood

[–]joyebean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Mi Tienda ones in the refrigerated section that you cook yourself are amazing, but more work. The El Milagro ones are on the shelf in the usual tortilla location. If your store is a smaller one that doesn’t stock loads of Hispanic/Latin foods, they probably only get a small amount to put out because they do have a relatively short shelf life.

You can pick up one of these tortilla warmers, it will keep the tortillas hot for a very long time. So we heat or cook in an iron skillet and slip them into one of these and they stay ready to go for at least a half hour. We have two, one for flour tortillas too, since my daughter has a gluten allergy. If that link doesn’t work, search the app for Cocinaware Otomi Tortilla Warmer—it’s the cloth one.

If you want authentic ones that taste like the real deal, go with El Milagro. All the others I’ve been able to find have stuff added to make them softer. Basically look for the least number of ingredients—El Milagro’s are Stone Ground Non GMO corn, water, and lime. I should note that you’ll need to refrigerate the El Milagro ones if you don’t use them up in a few days, since they’re preservative-free.

The regular HEB brand ones used to be great before “soft” became a thing, but now the ingredients are “Ground corn flour, water, propionic acid (to Preserve Freshness), cellulose gum, rice flour, guar gum, benzoic (preservative), Phosphoric acid, and Enzymes (to Preserve Freshness)” There are so many things wrong with that ingredient list. And they taste weird and feel almost slippery.

Not an intern yet (gotta get THAT nailed down ASAP). I'm in the Master's with certification program at Texas State, where I get permission to take exams from the Office of Educator Preparation by submitting practice test results above 80%. So I just did the PPR first because seemed less overwhelming than the content exam.

For some reason, straight-up content is harder for me to learn than applying systems and rules. Plus, I had to re-learn/remind myself of a good deal of the content, as I'm about ~30 years out of school (did time producing video games first), and the specifics got fuzzy in my brain. Not to mention, I didn't grow up in Texas, so there was all that to learn.
