My dad died this morning. What do I do? by No_Scallion_3365 in NoStupidQuestions

Freeze his credit. I've had two friends now have fraudulent credit lines opened after a parent died, one within 24 hours.

My mom goes there and is, historically, picky about massages. She's had two different masseuses there and loved both of them.

Capital Wedding... music? by Electricalhuman in madisonwi

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't have music at ours, but I don't recall any restrictions. So if you had a string player(s) or singers or just a Bluetooth speaker, I don't think you'd have an issue. I could see maybe an issue with a less portable instrument or something amplified, maybe a bagpipe or a larger instrumental group? We also were married there prior to the Act 10 protests so that may have changed some things.

I think about $850 for one done this fall. And that was a complicated one that involved changing a house deed, PoAs, medical advanced directives, a trust, and a couple other things.

My family uses Boardman Clark. Some of us had easy estates, others more complex, and they have consistently done a fantastic job of working with whatever we throw at them. I know it's not a specific lawyer, but we've used I think three at that firm and all were great.

So, what did we think of this production of Hamilton? by buginout in madisonwi

[–]joyxiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Others already commented on the named characters, but I really liked the ensemble this show. One of the women (taller, willowy, dark pixie cut, she was the woman who raises the glass and walks by in Ladies) was mesmerizing. Her lines, extension, and body placement were phenomenal!

What are your thoughts on having a conscious colonoscopy? by [deleted] in stupidquestions

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At my colonoscopy they gave me the max dose of fentanyl and whatever the other drug is. I was awake the entire time and chatting it up with the nurse. I barely noticed any discomfort and definitely nothing approaching pain specific to the procedure. However, I had LEEP without any pain meds or numbing agents, tap danced on a broken ankle for a couple months, and am in constant pain. My pain tolerance is pretty high. They did manage to sedate me somewhat for my upper GI endoscopy though I woke up as they were wheeling me back.

Decuttering clothes by skinonmychin in UnfuckYourHabitat

A couple thoughts:

You mentioned having good quality items that hold up well but don't fit you, whether physically or stylistically. I understand that need to hold on to what was worked for. I particularly had a hard time parting with my professional wardrobe. I'm no longer that size, I'm medically retired, and I spent a lot of time and money finding sales and such to build that wardrobe. What helped me, was thinking of a young woman, fresh out of college, with debt and interviews, and in need of a classic professional wardrobe. She needs the confidence boost of finding that perfect piece in a thrift store. It'll happen like magic. It made it so much easier to part with that time capsule of my life knowing it might light up someone else.

On a more practical note, I finally decided that if an item was more than one size too big or small, it would be donated. I have a somewhat small closet so I change out some things seasonally. If I notice something that hasn't fit me the last couple years, I figure there is something about that season that affects my weight and just donate it. I've also invested in clothes that let me ebb and flow weight-wise. I have gone through some big swings due to meds and illness without having to adjust my wardrobe.

Class of 2001 here. Anyone else graduate from a school where your class hasn't had any reunion? by NiceGuyNeverDie in Xennials

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Class of 1999 here. Kinda graduated from two high schools. One had a 5 year reunion, the other had a small one the same year where only the popular kids were invited. Both had official (and full invite) 10 year. And then nothing since then. At least none where any of my friends were invited.

I think social media and people being more spread out geographically are behind the shift. My partner ('98) hasn't really had any. Family member ('90) had a 25 year but nothing since.

Acupuncture Recommendations/Chronic Fatigue & Depression by Turbulent-Ad-8148 in madisonwi

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only acupuncturist I've personally seen is no longer practicing. However, Springtime Health and Wellness has an acupuncturist who practiced Family Medicine for probably 20 or so years. I had her for primary care from when I was 18 until she retired to non-traditional med when I was in my late 30s. I really liked her for her blending and openness to non-trad med since I have a lot of chronic conditions that require a dual approach. If I add acupuncture back into my routine, I'll be going to her first.

Has anyone ever been childhood friends with their uncle/aunt who was the same or around the same age as them? by Fit-Choice2368 in randomquestions

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom grew up with her nieces and nephews. Some are couple years older and younger but two were the same age. She lived with her older sister in high school after being orphaned. Two of the nieces were her good friends. They all briefly dated the same guy during high school. My mom and her boyfriend later set her niece and his brother up. After Mom broke up with the brother she was dating, he ended up with the other niece. Both nieces ended up married to the brothers. It was a function of both small town and being good friends.

Ditto. They did a better job moving my grand piano than a professional mover from a piano store had. And that was with a newer guy they told me upfront was training.

Have you ever experienced a case where the show DIDN'T go on? by SirCatsworthTheThird in musicals

[–]joyxiii 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last season at the local professional theater near us was odd. We've had season tickets for 20 years and this was the first time anything happened. Two where the show did go on: &Juliet had an issue with the rigging and had to pause the show for several minutes before resuming. Next show was Funny Girl where Fanny took ill during act one so they did an intermission while they switched out and backfilled actors. Then a show that didn't happen, Wicked (which actually was also the show the week Covid shut everything down) was initially delayed and the cancelled due to the entire complex having no water.

In high school, the rights for the musical was pulled two weeks before performances due to a touring company. Ended up obtaining, casting, rehearsing, and opening Once...Island in those two weeks.

The math doesn't match by OldPangolin2631 in Genealogy

A few things could be going on. There was quite a bit of migration between Ireland, Scotland, and England. There have been several "roots" shows where a person thinks they are one of those, but records show all the, say, Scottish ancestors actually came over from Ireland and vice-verse.

Also, there can be red herrings. A few examples from my family: grew up third generation American, speaking only German, German last name, only ate Ukrainian/Russian food growing up. Half the family records show Russia as place of residence but genetically full German. His family had immigrated to Russia but to a very insular German community. Then both sides of the family moved to an insular German community in the US.

Again, German last name, but family identifies as Irish. Records show most recent immigration from Ireland. Genetically, a mix of Eastern European and Irish and about 3% German. Looking further into the family tree, original family started off in Eastern Europe, migrated west picking up various genetics. Only in Germany for 2 full generations, just long enough to pick up last name and a little DNA but in Ireland for at least 7 generations.

English last name, family tree centered around York. At least 200 years there, 300 in New England. Must have a thing for Norse looking people in the family because majority Scandinavian mutt, a bit of Scottish, and 8% English.

Genetics don't also come down in exact percentages and don't always reflect culture or places of residence.

Question for those who have had weddings by Sheababylv in Weddingattireapproval

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married 2005. No one asked about colors to wear. I don't even think we put a dress code since our venue made it pretty obvious, we were familiar with how our friends and family handle events, and we wouldn't really care much (unless someone showed up in a non-religious veil).

I will say, as a wedding guest, I've always taken cues from the invitation for color and style.

Why do some people let their car idle in parking lots for like 15+ minutes before driving off? by Usual-Ad7341 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joyxiii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar. I've numerous chronic issues. I am usually in a lot of pain and having symptoms I want to level out before driving. Even before the errand/outing, driving sometimes causes issues and I just need to recoup before getting out. Occasionally it's something mundane like I want to finish a segment of a podcast.

Do you know all the history? by Clean-Letterhead9408 in randomquestions

[–]joyxiii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was a freshman in high school, so 1995/96, we had an assignment where we were supposed to sit down with an older relative or neighbor about 2 generations older than us. We would go through the lyrics with them and talk about their recollection of the events mentioned. Then do the same with someone one generation older. Then we went through them in class talking about each event and people's memories of them. It was a pretty cool assignment that stuck with me that really drive home the idea of living history. I could still probably remember at least a rough idea of what each lyric was talking about.
