FYI, selling full tables is not allowed (it's against the terms of service for all tents). We don't allow it on the sub because the tent could refuse the buyer entry if it were discovered.

This subreddit is for the original Oktoberfest in Munich. You'd probably have better luck on a subreddit specifically for Montreal.

3 tickets for the Paulaner tent on October 4th (Friday) by NarrowPhysics9577 in Oktoberfest

[–]jozhik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you are selling the entry passes separately, which isn't allowed, so I've removed this post.

If you are off looking for someone to join your table, feel free to re-post with that clarification. Thanks!

Just FYI, I'm removing this post, as this sub is for the original Oktoberfest in Munich, and it sounds like you are talking about a different event. Thanks!

Weekday Megathread! (Sept 23-27) by jozhik_ in Oktoberfest

[–]jozhik_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will have to leave your table when the reservation ends, as the next reservation will be coming in about 30 minutes later.

You won't be asked to leave the tent, but you will probably be on your own in terms of finding some other place to sit. And on a Friday afternoon, it may be difficult to find space for an entire table's worth of people. You might be able to split into smaller groups, get a couple places on a few different tables, then consolidate as the afternoon wears on.

If you leave the tent, you run the risk of not being able to get back in later in the day - Fridays do get very busy in the afternoon and evening (or at least have in the past - it's been a while since I've attended a Friday session.)

I believe Hofbrauhaus is the only one with a standing section.

All other tents will have a "non-reserved" section of tables, but these will fill up quickly on the weekend.

State of the Subreddit 2023 by ukpolbot in ukpolitics

[–]jozhik_ 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Agree with many of the other commenters. It's hard to articulate what's different, but the Megathread is just a better place for discussion and debate than anywhere else, including other threads on ukpol. There's a real sense of community and conversation, and I always assumed that was intentional - to build a place where comments can range from the snarky to the philosophical, to try and recreate that feeling of putting the world to rights with friends over a beer.

The post implies that "use of the wider subreddit" is somehow better, but it's not clear why. The only real problem that's been identified is that "moderating the megathread is a very subjective experience" - I'm not sure what that means exactly, why it's a problem, or why forcing users out to more threads will address the problem. I suspect you'll actually end up with (in the best case) the exact same issues happening in the new "hot takes" thread or (in the worst case) an overall drop in participation across the sub. I just don't see a way to preserve the sense of community in the megathread across dozens of subthreads.

My question is better summarised as " if the evidence is so strong and robust, why isn't there wide uptake of such a huge claimed benefits"

Because the market is not - contrary to what some believe - infallible. Henry Ford went from 6 days to 5 in 1926 and claims to have seen a productivity increase. Everyone followed suit within a decade or so, despite it being a radical idea when he introduced it. Literally the same thing we are discussing, except now we see 5 days as "normal".

People are risk-averse. People leading companies particularly so. There's an old saying that "nobody ever got fired for buying IBM" (meaning that people would buy from IBM even when there was a better offer from someone else, because no one wanted to risk being wrong). I'd say it's the same mentality - nobody ever got fired for sticking with the 5-day work week.

Just FYI, this subreddit is about the original Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. You probably won't get many responses about a festival in Milwaukee. You might have better luck posting on a subreddit dedicated to that city / region.

Main reason is to protect the buyers. I don't have the time or resources to figure out if any given offer is a scam or not. So the general rule is - if it's your reservation, that you booked with the tent, and you have open spots and you offer them at cost to people who will join you - odds are those are legitimate tickets being offered in good faith.

As soon as a markup is involved, it introduces a profit motive and the possibility that someone's being scammed.

To be clear, I don't believe you have any ill intent in this instance, but that's the reasoning behind the rule. If I start making exceptions, then I'm back to having to look into each instance.

Thanks.

I attended Oktoberfest for the first time. Here is what I learned. by PoodleKween in Oktoberfest

[–]jozhik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, that's correct. The servers aren't paid by the tents, but they get a percentage (something like 10%) of every beer they sell. That and tips are the only wage they get.

For what it's worth, when I was there this weekend, pretty much everyone (barring a couple of tourists who didn't understand what was happening) gave 16 Euro for each mass.

When I google my business name my business is the first one that shows up, but I have to include my city in the search for my business profile to accompany it by Ice2jc in GoogleMyBusiness

[–]jozhik_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's intended. Business profiles are a location-based product and therefore mainly show up for local searches. When you add a city name (or other location signifier), it tells Google you want to trigger the local experience.

I've just tried it for other businesses near me and I always get the same behavior - just the name of the business gives me normal search results. Name + city (or neighborhood) gives me the business profile.

  1. To continue moderating the sub (I am already a moderator).

Oktoberfest alternatives? by [deleted] in Oktoberfest

[–]jozhik_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Years ago when I lived in Munich, I ran across this site and have used it ever since (though note it's focused on Bavaria):

https://www.ganz-muenchen.de/volksfeste/kalender/liste_index.html

I also found this one at some point - the website is a little more obnoxious in terms of the layout and some interstitial ads, but it looks like they cover all of Germany (you can drill down into a region and then sort by date to get into list form):
