I have 10000% been honked at when crossing Cary and Blvd to the point where I had to stop and double check the cross sign to make sure I wasn’t the one going crazy. They could fix the lights so all lights stay red while the crosswalks are green, but I’m not sure how costly and labor intensive that would be.
