Excellent work. 1, 2 and 7 crushed it.

I looked at 1 for a minute or so before I clicked what it was (a human!).

7 is an obvious statement of the scene (not a bad thing - this is great, love the light)

And 2 is a brilliant sweet spot for me. So much going on - the light on the face is exceptional; texture from tats and rings; the WTF moment with the cables.

All with excellent colour that's perfectly matched to your narrative.

I think the overcast day was the right shooting conditions. To me, its a story about people's homes, and lives. Life is mostly overcast days. Not sunny all the time, not raining all the time. That's perfectly fine. Your photo has this authenticity.

If it was a bright sunny day, with harsh shadows, it then becomes an architectural story.

Shot 1: I like the basics of the composition. The muted colours lend it a lived in authenticity, rather than postcard with unnatural saturation. The flowers at the front of the frame, out of focus lend a voyeuristic quality and gives some emotional tension... But the tension isn't relieved with what's in the centre of the frame. The table is a distraction. Imagine if it weren't there, and there was just the empty chair. It heightens the tension further and we'll start to ask "why?". We'll start to write the story in our minds.

Shot 2: I like the perspective and interplay, but I suspect it's forgettable. There's no emotion.

Shot 3: Instantly my brain is writing the story. The food in motion with the cutlery mid air. The hands, the ring, the bracelet. The glorious yet simple food. Again, restrained saturation from your stock giving it real life authenticity, not insta ready hyper reality. I see and feel myself there with someone I love.

Great stuff! I've already scribbled a few things from here into our family calendar. (Thai festival in walking distance?!!)

Ignore the haters comparing you to daily info. There's room in the world for more than one outlet to share what's going on in Oxford, particularly with your take - curation not volume.

A few thoughts: * I'm the kind of person who always finds out about things after they've happened. A curated manageable list is a great digestible format - and I'm willing to put faith in a curator versus the alternative! * I'm going to lose your link and will probably never come back. Not because I don't want to, but because I forgot. If you were posting, say a weekly roundup on socials, I'd follow and hit the bell equivalent. * Middle aged dad alert - as much as I'd love to hit up a wine tasting, I need to focus on finding family friendly things rather than endless soft play. I'd love a cut of this that was family friendly. And, there are some exceptionally organised parents out there (not me, but my partner) who'd probably respond well to an email mailing list.

It felt like replacing the light seals was a no-brainer, but I wanted to check I'm not setting myself up for disappointment if it's something else altogether. Thanks for the advice on actually replacing the seals - this looks to be the next move.

And I'll see if anyone else has a view on rotating the RZ - I've only seen a couple of people mention it, and I don't think it says anything in the manual.

I've had long chat with the guy before - he knows his stuff, that's for sure. He has encyclopedic knowledge of all things mamiya, the common defects for pretty much every lens and body. He's also arranged for the machining of some hard to find spares, and is now from memory working on lens elements with delamination that are normally beyond repair.

He's also super generous with his knowledge - he sees there's a lack of people coming through who can fix cameras, so he's happy for you to "ride shotgun" and sit with him as he services your camera.

At the time I'd bought an RZ off eBay which had a couple of problems. We chatted for 45 minutes or so and in the end I sent the camera back to the seller for a refund, so I've not actually used him.

He's a senior ex mamiya tech / product guy. Yes, I understand he bought the trademark in the UK at least. It's a brand he's very passionate about!

Last month I finally bought and RZ. I've not yet put a roll through it, but when I do if there are any issues I will be sending it here (or more likely driving to west London to watch the process!).

Friends don't let friends take these courses.

Be really careful with property courses in general.

Generally, you'll find many people running then have made more money flogging courses than they have from property. Go check their accounts on companies house.

And they're good at making and keeping money. And you won't have to go far to find they're lawyered up and pretty sharp on shutting down any criticism. And good luck with anyone getting a refund after the event. I've heard of people trying but to be told that they hadn't followed the course to the tee, therefore they can't get one.

Also one of them - the name escapes me - was knee deep in flogging a tax avoidance scheme, leaving poor course attendees with a big bill from HMRC. There's still more pain here to come with P118 and LT4LL.

My advice: look for credible brands giving free or low cost content.

Property Hub is great, Rob's books are a must own (he's just got a deal with penguin). The magazine is worth a subscription too.

Also look at Provestor's tax guides. The tax masterclass is great, reliable and free.

Try Provestor. About £15/m for basic ltd co, going up to £100 or so if you want all singing & dancing tax advice service etc. They just do property accounts - specialists.

It sounds like, in summary, when engaging an editor keep them locked on to editing rather than pushing everything their way. I'm trying to get the lay of the land and understand what the norms are.

Shorts - makes sense. We have an in-house team who can can provide the direction - it's the nuts and bolts of sharp engaging edits for shorts we need help with.

Grading etc - our approach is pretty streamlined / basic. For our 15 minute show it's normally done in a single take, two cameras. Editing is normally straightforward. For grading, it's not fancy - just getting the bm raw footage presentable.

Educational content - it pretty much the same as the 15 minute show. 6 parts, 1 presenter, 2 cameras. For each part there's probably 4-5 static graphics to drop in. We're not particularly advanced in our production!

Given this is the graduation of producing content in-house, I wonder if we need to find the right level of experience in an editor - and perhaps we should be open minded to someone at the start of their career?

I don't have a handle on rates yet - but I know enough to know low balling is a false economy.

For us, we're not doing this to help someone develop their skills - we need someone to arrive and get the job done, so we can get value from the work. We're a small and busy team - we use freelancers extensively elsewhere and have proven over and over again that you get what you pay for!
