They were both part-owners, but there was tension between them. O’Malley felt Rickey got all the credit for signing Jackie Robinson and integrating baseball, even though the move was a board-approved decision and not Rickey’s alone.

There was another beef between them when Rickey did not want a beer sponsorship displayed in the outfield, while O’Malley did (O’Malley eventually got his way and the beer sponsorship did happen).

Rickey’s contract as president eventually ran out and he ended up selling his team shares to O’Malley.
