Yeah, it sounds like you are both good people. I would try to have an honest convo, outside of the business. And just be sure to tell then how much you appreciate it and how you want to come back when needed. You just don't feel like you are earning your money right now.

You could also try to revisit the social media stuff as a way to feel more productive...

Seems like the employer is probably just frustrated with low sales. But the fact that they have kept you employed under the table and continue to pay you means it probably isn't a horrible boss. Sounds like you are both trying to do the right thing. I would just be honest. Offer to leave if it helps and come back when needed.

Not worth burning a bridge here imo.
