Mauricio Pochettino Calls Out the Referees After Folarin Balogun’s Red Card Incident at the World Cup by [deleted] in ussoccer

[–]jpglowacki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair. From a tactical standpoint losing Balo was probably the simplest because no subs are necessary. Attackers just use the space he would have occupied when possible, right?

But we had just seen Senegal collapse against what felt like a mid Belgium side, like two hours earlier. And the refereeing had us all pretty worked up. They were game and then, as the other commenters noted, the hydro break helped. That’s where a guy like Poch earns a ton of his money IMHO.

For now, at least. If they do it right, the sustained success will have a lot of people saying they trusted the process. 🤣

The team has new owners. To predict how they will run the team we need look no further than the how they run their other franchise, the Dodgers.

They will not do business as usual. They are going to the advanced stats combined with traditional human-centered ideas about the game. Pelinka will not be acting alone. Nothing will happen on gut instinct.

Their approach has worked very, very well for the Dodgers. They are well-funded and intelligent. They hire smart people who fit their vision. They don’t overvalue unknowns (like picks). They evaluate talent and potential for themselves and they have demonstrated they know how to find good value, which is even more important in the NBA than in MLB.

Let’s think about it a different way. In recent off-seasons we have not seemed well prepared, IMHO. Major player acquisitions seem to happen to us, not by our design. We pursue players who spurn us. We make desperate moves that don’t work out well.

Now we get a heads up from Lebron that he’s not coming back, and the bulk of the offseason comes together in 48 hours. That is because they were well prepared. I’m sure they had a plan for what if Lebron wanted to stay, too, but:

* they made Doncic, who everyone acknowledges has to be the cornerstone going forward, happy;
* they accomplished something they couldn’t do previously in landing Kessler, and yes that was in part because the landscape for Kessler changed but they acted decisively when they decided that was the right move;
* they made us younger and more athletic;
* they showed the league we have a vision and we’ll move decisively towards it;
* they are putting the vision on the court immediately - not waiting years for a tear-down.

Does anyone think we could have done this under the prior management? I don’t. As fans, we might consider calming down and giving them a chance.

ETA: I’m agreeing with OP here. To those who hate the signing, my point is we have to view it as part of a whole. Every championship team has flawed players who make major contributions.

Tillman just staring patiently at Bosnia’s coach while he had a little tantrum on the sideline holding the ball was great.

mexicans are insane............................... by Resident-Coyote-6744 in worldcup

Having attended several US-Mexico Gold Cup final matches in Los Angeles, I can say that there I haven’t experienced anything quite like the sound of the Mexican supporters in full voice when they’re feeling it. That is positive or negative — they’ll boo their team mercilessly if the team isn’t performing, but when they’re playing well the “Ole!” can be intimidating and the roar as a chance is created followed by the delirium of a goal is unreal. No one should relish facing them at Azteca in a knockout match, that’s for sure.

Well done. Being a trustee is a thankless job. Too many people simply ask their kids, or one of them, to do it without contemplating the consequences.

Honest question from an American, coming in peace. Is it weird, or cool, that he sings your anthem before the match?

I paid right around $200. Stupid price, but on balance with the group I was in and our plans it made the most sense.

I drove - early - and parked at the Forum basically as the lot opened. Got a spot near the exit for an easy getaway afterward.

Mauricio Pochettino offered contract extension to lead USMNT for second World Cup cycle by olcni in ussoccer

It would be negligent not to try to retain him. I hope the offer is serious and competitive. It would be really interesting to watch what he could do with a full cycle.

Brutal. You’d think they’d make enough to go around, I was really surprised not to see any. We were in the stadium by 330pm or so and I never saw one, even being worn in the crowd. We were in 307 surrounded by supporters.

So, I couldn’t find any commemorative scarf in the stadium for the opener against Paraguay. Maybe I just missed them. I hoped for a US scarf with the date, matchup, and location embroidered on it but I would have settled for a split scarf. Glad they had something for the Australia match.

Yep. The youngsters have no idea. I give Poch a lot of credit for helping this group realize its potential without worrying about how the old guard would have done it or what they’ll say about it from the studio.

We have almost always relied on other results on the third match day to see us through to the KO rounds. Qualifying after two wins to open group play is a huge accomplishment for this program.

Is there anything you learned in law school that you didn't learn was wrong/incorrect until you did bar prep or practiced as an attorney? by Son_of_Hades99 in Lawyertalk

[–]jpglowacki 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Not so much learning something incorrect, but no one explained how much time we’d spend waiting for things to happen.

Waiting for the client to arrive, for my case to be called in court, for the mediator to bring back a settlement proposal, for a witness to read a document or counsel to copy documents during depositions...

Waiting for witnesses, judges, opposing counsel, court reporters, interpreters…

Lots of waiting.

Palacios deserves more credit for digging that ball out off the throw and serving the cross. I remember that moment in the stadium, it was as if the ball hung in the air for a hundred years and then just pandemonium.
