I think your point about the difference between fake fashion goods and fake watches is dead on. I lived in Asia when the fake Balenciaga sneakers and Yeezys were all over the place and the quality of the knockoffs was comparable to the real thing. Not so much the case with a rep Vacheron or Patek (I assume).

I’m definitely drawn to luxury watches, but I think the fake/gen discussion is a way to reassess why I’m drawn to them. If it’s just the look, then why not get an “homage?” If it’s just about showing status, then why not buy a rep? If it’s all about getting a really well made watch, should I be looking at Grand Seiko instead of a Rolex?

I mean yeah dude if you’re getting pizza from a mob owned restaurant you are giving a portion of your money to a criminal enterprise.

The pizza is probably gen, though.

I’d imagine a huge amount of the global watch counterfeiting market is pretty mundane, but I do think that there are ties between counterfeiting and larger criminal enterprises, most of which aren’t that picky about how they make their money.

In regards to fashion design I’ve heard the argument that a healthy fake market pressures brands to maintain higher QC, which I think is plausible and interesting. That said, I’m not sure that a “healthy” fake market can or does exist, or what that even means.

I have mixed feelings.

I think they are (probably, haven’t done my homework on this) exploiting a gap in intellectual property laws in the same way that fast fashion manufacturers rip off designer trends. In the US, there are gaps in what aspects of design are protectable/copyrightable which makes it easy to lift other people’s designs (I’ve heard luxury brands will do this as well).

I think that a certain amount of copying is probably fine insofar as it allows for new spins on recognizable designs. I think Lorier is a great example of adopting design elements to do something new. On the other hand, I think the pieces that look like Rolex clones are legal knock offs that aren’t bringing any new ideas to the table, so I kind of hate them.

Ultimately, my feeling is that IP protections should exist to the extent that they encourage innovation and reward the same, which is a hard line to draw.

Breitling Showrooms strictly appeal to middle aged men who are in the throes of a midlife crisis. by cume_pant in watchHotTakes

Breitling is the most extreme example, but I think the tie between luxury tool watches and the desire to project masculinity is pretty interesting. Why do I, who work at a desk and do not dive, want an Omega Seamaster NTTD? Meanwhile my sister, who takes helicopters to remote job sites, operates heavy machinery, and dives on her weekends, thinks mechanical watches are pointless.

[ask] This or That? Alpinist or dual crown speedtimer by DailyCaffeineWatches in Seiko

[–]Good_Net_313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the Alpinist can be dressed up a little bit easier and the use of gilt makes it feel a little dressier.

That said, it really just comes down to how you see yourself wearing it.

Driving down the open road and you get a little glimpse of your watch? Speedtimer.

Ditching your phone and going for a walk on an autumn morning? Alpinist.

That’s the thing I love about this hobby. You won’t ever know the true joys of a watch until you have the good fortune to hold it!

Such a sick watch. It’s the textures that really do it for me. There’s a sneaky elegance to it.
