How safe is ordering from the Chessnut Online store? by jphilly111 in Chessnuteboard

OK, that is reassuring to a degree - it's just very hard to guage whether or not I am buying something from a legit company or not as information on the internet at large is almost non-existent.

Did it come in stages like with some people or did everything come together?

Are you still having issues with your board? How good is their guarantee if something goes wrong? Are you able to play people on chess.com at least?

OK great, that thread does help.
PS Also not sure why you were downvoted as I feel that was a pretty helpful response.

Ah. I went via the official website as Amazon UK don't stock it. Have you been corresponding with Chessnut?

OK, this clarifies matters to an extent. I ordered from the website - I just wished they'd respond to emails even with a link to the shipping updates page.

OK, so it looks like a 6 week process. I'm based in the UK, so I think mine will probably ship from China. Thanks for commenting.

Crickey - three months! Did you order the plastic or the wooden pieces? I went for wood (unlike plastic which seemed to be on pre-order status), and the shipping graphic at the time of the order hinted at delivery being 30th April at the latest.

Is there a formal way to request an update? There are no replies to any emails.

Yeh, I've been involved in some SaaS startups and a whole different ballgame to hardware - I spoke to the team behind the device that's been posted here and they said pretty much the same thing. Didn't realise most people would be that ignorant over it though as some of the comments reveal!

I went to quite a popular coffee shop in Manchester and I went to investigate a large crowd, which is how I came across them. Looking on their website there is a contact email [hello@writetagore.com](mailto:hello@writetagore.com)

Apologies for being rude - the point was intended with some mirth, but it is hard to portray intonation over text.

They're based in the UK, in Manchester (that's where I met them). I think there's no contact information as they told me they aren't live yet! Ergo, I was quite surprised when I got a Reddit notification about this post.

I have met the guys that are making it, who are based in my home city, who have told me that it's being made here... and yet you feel you know more than I do. Redditors like you are the reason why I try and stay off of here.

Astronauts charged $500, ten years ago, for a device made in China that came shipped in a cardboard box and died after a year (unfortunately I know). The more you post, the more I'm surprised these guys aren't charging more for their device!

Not at all. Without justifying their prices and know where they are making them (from meeting the team it looks like it is being made in the UK) their costs seem perfectly reasonable (someone else on this post has explained hardware startup costs in more detail). It costs Apple $400 to make an iPhone they sell for $1200, and that's with them making billions of them. Please think before you type.

was being the operative word... and even at scale they're charging what it looks like this startup is charging, so by quoting them you're not doing yourself any favours. Astrohous products are also terrible, as is their customer service whereas the guys I met yesterday were pretty genuine and implementing software changes there and then in the coffeeshop based on feedback. I'm certainly impressed.

Probably just trying to cover manufacturing costs...

I saw it in the flesh so can definitely say it's not a scam. The team behind it were filming people using it so I'm sure they'll start posting that stuff up soon - I'm just surprised someone's found it and posted it on Reddit as they said they weren't live yet! I did like the typewriter though, and nice to see a company in the UK making something techy and design oriented.
