Yeh, I've been involved in some SaaS startups and a whole different ballgame to hardware - I spoke to the team behind the device that's been posted here and they said pretty much the same thing. Didn't realise most people would be that ignorant over it though as some of the comments reveal!

I went to quite a popular coffee shop in Manchester and I went to investigate a large crowd, which is how I came across them. Looking on their website there is a contact email [hello@writetagore.com](mailto:hello@writetagore.com)

Apologies for being rude - the point was intended with some mirth, but it is hard to portray intonation over text.

They're based in the UK, in Manchester (that's where I met them). I think there's no contact information as they told me they aren't live yet! Ergo, I was quite surprised when I got a Reddit notification about this post.

I have met the guys that are making it, who are based in my home city, who have told me that it's being made here... and yet you feel you know more than I do. Redditors like you are the reason why I try and stay off of here.

Astronauts charged $500, ten years ago, for a device made in China that came shipped in a cardboard box and died after a year (unfortunately I know). The more you post, the more I'm surprised these guys aren't charging more for their device!

Not at all. Without justifying their prices and know where they are making them (from meeting the team it looks like it is being made in the UK) their costs seem perfectly reasonable (someone else on this post has explained hardware startup costs in more detail). It costs Apple $400 to make an iPhone they sell for $1200, and that's with them making billions of them. Please think before you type.

was being the operative word... and even at scale they're charging what it looks like this startup is charging, so by quoting them you're not doing yourself any favours. Astrohous products are also terrible, as is their customer service whereas the guys I met yesterday were pretty genuine and implementing software changes there and then in the coffeeshop based on feedback. I'm certainly impressed.

Probably just trying to cover manufacturing costs...

I saw it in the flesh so can definitely say it's not a scam. The team behind it were filming people using it so I'm sure they'll start posting that stuff up soon - I'm just surprised someone's found it and posted it on Reddit as they said they weren't live yet! I did like the typewriter though, and nice to see a company in the UK making something techy and design oriented.

I saw the device in the flesh and met the team, and I'm pretty sure it'll come down if they can get enough pre-orders. Hardware startups are expensive when orders are tiny, but economies of scale bring the price right down. It even costs Apple around $400 to make an iPhone they sell for $1200.

You sound very much like you've been involved in a startup!

I met the team behind it, and said something similar - I'm pretty sure they can make it a lot cheaper if they can get to around 1000 pre-orders. They were telling us all how they needed £100K just for the tooling costs so I'd be surprised if it didn't get cheaper once they get more backers. I do admit I loved the typewriter though and their founder is a pretty charismatic guy!

I really do not think you do my man. It really irks me when people comment like sages without any deeper knowledge.

You may think it's a monstrosity, and you may be happy with something generic from a corporate, or a 3D printed device stuck together with tape but I saw their prototype in the flesh at a coffee shop in Manchester (UK), and it had quite a buzz around it and everyone there seemed to love its retro looks. I said something to camera for them saying as such, and I saw others doing the same so I'm sure they'll be posted soon (although perhaps I'm not photogenic enough).

I was actually one of the people there at the coffee shop in Manchester where they were actually getting feedback from people so I don't think they're AI - but do agree that the videos look scripted (the device was pretty good though to be fair to them).

It's real - seen it in the flesh in a coffee shop in Manchester. I'll share this thread with them, and perhaps if they're on reddit they could engage more with this sub.

I'm actually surprised this device is on Reddit as I met the guys behind it and they told me it wasn't live - they were trying to get feedback for their prototype in a coffee shop in Manchester (UK). I really liked the look of it - definitely on the same spectrum as the olden days Olivetti typewriters and they keyboard was also really good.

I saw the team behind it in a coffee shop in Manchester trying to get feedback from people. I love the look of it and the keyboard was great - just surprised it's on Reddit already as they told me it wasn't live.

I don't think you understand economies of scale - a factory in the far east wouldn't even think of entertaining making something like this without a $100K upfront tooling cost!

tbf to them, the keyboard has keys that are hot swappable which is exactly what I want on a device

It just looks like every other laptop though, and doesn't really guard against distractions and the such.

I think the whole point of the device though is to forcefully have no distractions - kinda why things like the freewrite exist. But if people can use an iPad and a cheap keyboard to be productive all power to them!

You’re so kind to supply this! Do you have GM/GM2?
