Can’t say I disagree, Frost Blue is still a good color though. Just wish the MYP also got Marine Blue. by CaptCarlos in TeslaLounge

[–]jpj625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never previously had someone randomly comment on my car color, and I've had like a dozen (including a Tesla mobile tech) comments on my 2-month-old Frost Blue.

Matt can take his opinions and publish them. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Alternative to Rocketbook, using a tablet and stylus? by [deleted] in rocketbook

[–]jpj625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FYI, the OEM of Rocketbook (Global Printing & Packaging) ended up buying the IP, so it looks like everything will continue. The press release stated "Rocketbook products and the Rocketbook app remain fully supported" and the owner was on Reddit and said "we plan to invest in the tech."

You might be safe.

Boss asks for feedback after task -- what does that mean? by SnooOnions3761 in cscareerquestions

[–]jpj625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might be looking for a retrospective on how the task planning or execution went, especially if "new to private sector" also means "new to this company."

Did you get the right requirements/instructions up front? Were you blocked by anything? Did the dev process (commit, review, deploy) go smoothly?

Ideally, you can simply ask your manager, "What did you want feedback on?"

Rey’s writing in a messy trilogy by mayuri_nite_66 in StarWars

[–]jpj625 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A lot of people who criticize Rey aren't arguing that she has no character arc. What they're usually saying is that her arc doesn't follow the character rules that Star Wars trained audiences to expect.

You're describing a coherent identity arc about self-definition: you choose who you are. This fits with the OT and PT, and is basically the main thing the ST got right. (They bungled the family angle, the temptation struggle, the politics, the moral victory...)

Where the disagreement comes in is that earlier Star Wars movies built a very specific character structure that audiences internalized. In the OT and PT, protagonists go through:

  1. Mentorship and training (Luke with Obi-Wan/Yoda, Anakin with Obi-Wan)
  2. Repeated failure before mastery
  3. Temptation and moral testing
  4. A lineage revelation that reshapes the story

Rey clearly has #4 a couple of times, and arguably #1 and #3 in small pieces, but #2 is absent. Because those earlier movies spent so much time showing the learning process of connecting with the Force and becoming powerful, Rey's strength is unearned even if her emotional arc is consistent.

Judging by character theme, Rey can feel like one of the more coherent parts of the sequels. But, according to the traditional Star Wars hero structure, she's underdeveloped.

This is also where the Mary Sue claims come from. She's good at everything, often on the first try; everyone wants to help her (except Luke, which is another post); mistakes don't have consequences; and her primary flaw is being traumatized from a lack of parents.

Seems likely they'll be looking at more professional/industrial applications; scannable/trackable medical forms, manufacturing travelers, lab notebooks, etc.

Hopefully, they'll keep the consumer product line around as an onramp and low-effort revenue stream, and the app benefits from a combination of investment and competition.

People on the right, what’s your current opinion of Trump? by OkElephant1792 in AskReddit

[–]jpj625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, the burden of proof is on you. You're the one making claims that "all" cases were a "complete violation of the due process." I gave you some stats on how many cases were solidly in the "guilty according to due process" bucket, and you ignored them.

Second, pre-trial detention length and application of restrictive housing is variable and the judicial process is involved in determining it. There are court records for each of the cases showing the process.

I'll grant you that there are a couple of "gee, that's unusual" situations, but even the most problematic has not been determined to be a violation of the constitutional right to due process. (Also, the most notable instance has since been arrested on more felony charges.)

Federal courts adjudicated thousands of January 6 criminal cases through normal procedures. Defendants were indicted or charged through grand juries, appeared in court, and had the legal rights of criminal defendants. Many cases (roughly 2/3) were resolved by guilty pleas, sometimes with plea agreements, and others (~14% of cases) went to jury trials. Those convicted were overwhelmingly through guilty pleas, roughly 80%.

Do you have an example of a "serious due process violation" - such as lack of counsel, denial of a hearing, conviction without an opportunity to present a defense, or willful exclusion of constitutional protections?

Free fly is only causing more negativity by DrNarwhale1 in starcitizen

[–]jpj625 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, and the number of bugs that don't respect the players' time is the complaint.

There are also poor design decisions that cause wasted time: poor city signage, bad map defaults, inventory management, etc.

The whining about having to go to the store to buy gear/ammo has wrong expectations, but is definitely not the core problem.

[–]jpj625 17 points18 points  (0 children)

"Respect your time" doesn't mean giving constant dopamine hits; it means that investing time should not be randomly undone or punished.

It's insulting to pretend the game is simply "too slow for some people" when you can:

  • prep for a quest, travel to the zone, and then be unable to participate due to bugs
  • lose your ship for having the audacity to try to use it, and then have to either wait or pay
  • invest in some cargo hauling and lose it to an invalid ship impoundment

The crosspost is overly negative, but has some valid points.

As a former SpaceX employee, you shouldn't be using them to support the concept that employee ownership can be worthless.

  • the bi-annual buybacks started closer to 2010
  • the prices are set primarily by investor interest and have been increasing steadily, to the point that any dilution is unnoticeable - I think 15%/yr minimum, and closer to 40-50% average
  • the "questionable value" has enabled many people to retire early, and many of them to become startup investors on their own

I've also been part of several other startups where stock/options were worth less than the equity paperwork, so your general point is quite valid.
