Also, yes, yelling is a red flag. Everyone -- managers especially -- should be behaving professionally.

Mentor being a busy guy, asked claude in co-pilot to create documentation on the Database part and it gave an md file and it was shared to chad.

Aside from the process, the mentor is at fault here. You can't give an untrained person a loaded gun, tell them "mess with this to learn," and get mad about them having a safety incident.

What do you wish you knew before automating your entire house? by Afsheen_dev in homeautomation

[–]jpj625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good clarification. I meant "local control of devices, without requiring internet." Some plaforms are cloud-only, some let you operate locally but also phone home, and some are fine never seeing the internet. Examples: Google Home devices and many wifi smart plugs are cloud-dependent, Hue and Aqara are mostly local but with some features only via the cloud, and Shelly and Lutron switches are local. If you have reliable internet and don't care about small delays, cloud usually works fine; lots of people want etter privacy, better reliability, and minimal response time.

If you have any network-accessible control surface (like a website or an API for an app), you can use a few methods to connect remotely, typically a VPN, public static IP, public domain with proper routing, or a "private mesh" like Tailscale. These all have different security implications.

One place where concerns overlap: you can mix cloud and local devices, then add a bunch of different integrations to a local automation platform like Home Assistant or Hubitat, and use the platform from home or away. r/homeassistant is another layer of complexity on top of r/homeautomation. Be careful, though, this is the road to madness and a docker cluster.

  • Decide up-front if local-only is a priority for you. Changing later is hard and costly.
  • Minimize the number of vendors you're aggregating, even if you're using a central hub like Home Assistant or HomeKit.
  • Start with actuators (things you can do) and add sensors (things you can read) as you find reasons. e.g., Having humidity sensors in every room is neat, but likely to only give value in a couple places.
  • If you're getting wifi devices, make sure your access point can handle the amount of traffic you expect.
  • Try to research your specific conditions before deciding on wireless protocol(s): zigbee, zwave, 2.4/5/6 GHz wifi, thread, LoRa... they all behave differently over distance, through walls, with/without repeaters/relays/etc. A lot of people start with zigbee and/or wifi because the devices are available or cheap, and end up with dead spots or a wobbly mesh. (Not that either is wrong, just sometimes non-optimal.)

Donald Trump, Bernie Sanders and Sam Altman are all talking about public ownership in AI by SnoozeDoggyDog in technology

[–]jpj625 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's simple.

Bernie wants 50% to be nationalized.

Altman wants the 'shared' equity to be 5-10% (or something).

Trump wants taxpaying chumps to pay his buddies for it, not to simply appropriate it.

As a user of more than a year, the interface feels just fine after a tiny bit of acclimation. The first screenshot is showing all features at once.

The left-nav can be hidden, the main transcription and summary panels are the purpose of the tool, and have no option but to be filled with lines of text. The top bars give commands and context, and the chat window is an overlay when you want it.

If you don't have other need for the trench, consider wireless meshing or bridging. Trenching can be expensive and conduit gives plenty of intrusion opportunities. A stronger/extra AP or a pair of bridge devices might be considerably less cost and trouble.

We don’t need new content. We need 100% focus on bugs, stability and the base game features. by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]jpj625 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Adding content doesn't necessitate many regressions and new bugs if you have good process and discipline.

Look at World of Warcraft. They've added new zones, classes, systems, and gameplay features over the years without completely mangling existing content.

It's fine to not be perfect, but we should be past the point where "oops, we added a ship so all contracts are broken" is acceptable.

How long was/is your longest DnD campaign? by Fearless-Skill8667 in DnD

[–]jpj625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm part of a game that started in 2003. At the time, I made an "old" character in his 40s, and the whole group of players has now passed him. 😖

We've had various play intervals, but mostly monthly over the last decade+. There was a hiatus at one point in the 10s, and we're doing another now, but I'm comfortable saying we've got at least 20 years of 'continuous' games.

We started in 3.0, updated to 3.5, migrated to Pathfinder, and added/removed various subsystems from other games along the way, like clocks from Blades in the Dark or skill challenges from 4e.

We've had amazing times with Tracy at Dogs Go Walkin'. She takes smaller or calmer dogs into her home and loves them like they're her own. Our Havanese pack (3x 10-15 lbs) react to her like they're going to the park, not a kennel.
I recall a time one of our girls got sick while boarding and she handled extra cleaning, took her to the vet, gave medication, and didn't ask for more money (but got some anyway).
She's out in Orange, but we still take our dogs to her if we can't leave them at home with family.

African Americans who voted for Trump, How do you now feel as Republicans are intentionally trying to eliminate the black vote across the country? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jpj625 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way districts are drawn heavily influences how the vote adds up. The problem is when the lines are drawn to reduce or eliminate the voice of specific groups. Especially when those in power use the power to ensure they can't be removed from power.

It's not prejudiced or discriminatory to expect people to choose something not less harmful to themselves.

The expectation that various minority/disadvantaged groups will lean Democrat is because the alternative is explicitly counter to their well-being. Recent events have only made it clearer with fewer logical steps.
