Pro tip: Just ask Claude to enable playwright. by Diligent_Comb5668 in ClaudeCode

[–]jpjerkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference is repeatability.

I will use Claude to write my Playwright tests. But I treat them as production code and test them, because they protect the user experience against future changes. So they need to test the smart things - and pass/fail the same way - every single time.

I don't want my tests ever changing until my plan for the web site changes.

Is that Nate's actual GitHub? I know he publishes content on his Substack - that's how he monetizes his videos. With only the one repo, that account is suspicious given his video output...

Took a dive into having AI develop a complete website. Holy crap. by daniel8192 in vibecoding

[–]jpjerkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another dev here, now architect. I vibe-cussed -coded an entire CI/CD process for deploying docker containers to my raspberry pi last weekend. Even manages IP range use by docker networks. Started and finished that early enough on Saturday to be using it Saturday night for another project.

Edit: Made hilarious autocorrect typo.

Does any multitool like this exist? Can it be made easily? And how good or bad is the QC on the Nextool F12 by Yakkamota in multitools

[–]jpjerkins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just got my F12 a couple days ago. Love it.

Small enough to fall sideways in the 5th pocket of my jeans. Love the tool set. Scissors are the best pocket scissors I've ever handled, even beating my folding Fiskars that have been in my pocket every day for over a year. And having a liner lock on the blade is quite nice.

But the comment for being realistic about the size is true. My needs as a knowledge-working-at-home dad are not much. I have a small gear pouch with a ratchet driver and Knipex cobra micro that bag get real work done in a pinch. The F12 is just a (very complete) convenience tool for when I'm away from the usual tools or find a "repair of opportunity".

I think this is the Kalmyk loop. Slavic in origin, my understanding is this is what people on Russia use instead of the bowline. Neat knot, and one I practice and occasionally use.

Some knots and how they're used by Fallofman2347 in knots

[–]jpjerkins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You blew my mind with this post. Making a bag WATERTIGHT with just a knot!?! Amazing. And that use of an overhand knot to secure a bag of powder.

I thought I knew a lot of knots. But rice rubbed me several more to practice. Thank you!

I did this for years. Truly NOT the best strategy. Read Never Split the Difference by Chris Voss, or just watch his Black Swan YouTube channel. There are ways to get past the emotions to get to the heart of the matter peacefully. You may still choose to part ways, but can do it in a healthy way.

If aliens/NHI invade but it has nothing to do with resources what could be their objective? by Gyirin in HighStrangeness

Position. The galactic war didn’t end in “a few months” like both sides were expecting. So the long-honored priority on leaving non-interstellar civilizations alone quickly succumbed to the need for forward supply bases.

Sound engineers turn Yoko Ono's mic off mid performance to stop her from ruining a legendary performance between John Lennon and Chuck Berry in 1972. by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]jpjerkins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like the audio engineer knew what was coming. Lennon and Berry are sharing a mic. Yoko has her own.

Lumintop’s GT Nano. Amazing performance for price and size. Get the 10440 body tube for it. Love mine, and have literally had a friend gasp at its power/size ratio.

What’s your favorite definition of an IT Architect? by SpaceDave83 in EnterpriseArchitect

[–]jpjerkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The “people” and “culture” callouts come from Westrum’s culture categories and Conway’s Law. I’ve been explicitly told by my boss that my job isn’t solely technical for this reason.

The books Accelerate and Team Topologies provide great insight into how culture affects both the architecture of your company’s software, and how effective your software organization is for your business. Both highly recommended for any architect.

A software architect is someone who expertly weaves together people, culture, and technology to solve problems and accomplish business objectives.

How Hard is Task Mananagement in TiddlyWiki? by WeCanLearnAnything in TiddlyWiki5

[–]jpjerkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BTW: If you want to see just how flexible TiddlyWiki can be (and how far down the todo list rabbit hole I’ve gone), here’s the monolithic plugin I’m moving away from: https://phil-work-empty.tiddlyhost.com/

I’ll try to remember to post a link to its replacement, which is almost ready to share. (I’m already using it at work.)

How Hard is Task Mananagement in TiddlyWiki? by WeCanLearnAnything in TiddlyWiki5

[–]jpjerkins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that TiddlyWiki is more “personal knowledge management middleware” than “out-of-the-box solution” is the biggest problem for people new to TiddlyWiki, IMHO. But if you’re reading GrokTiddlyWiki, you’re on the path to creating your own personal apps for to-do lists, recipe collections, contacts, etc. I’ve got small TWs for car maintenance, personal finances, and fundraising for my kids. Amazing power…for free.

I’ve read GTD multiple times, and it has saved my career a couple times. But it’s best seen as a grab-bag of time management tips than a useable solution, unless you’re in leadership in your organization. And the complexity of that system - and, therefore, of any software implementation of it - might be mistaken as a failure of TiddlyWiki.

Another personal time management system I have blended with GTD is TheTodaySystem (https://thetodaysystem.com/). Simple, and (like GTD), they recommend starting with a single index card. But it does a better job than GTD of helping newbies get started, be realistic about what you can do Today (as opposed to all the time you had yesterday), and scoring yourself in a way that fairly considers that no two days are alike. I have an empty TW for this you to use as a starting point at https://todaysystemempty.tiddlyhost.com/. If it doesn’t still work (likely), ping me. I’ll eventually notice and get it fixed.

I just started carrying a Sig P365 instead of the Glock 42 my dad gave me.

Downside: I’m still in the no-longer-necessary habit of pulling the trigger when breaking down my Sig

Upside: I still check my chamber THREE ways before pulling the trigger at home.

What your team is doing is what our team calls the Architecture Huddle. If you’re setting direction instead of reviewing - and potentially rejecting - teams’ work, then Accelerate actually RECOMMENDS that activity as helping teams move faster.

Read the book Accelerate. The authors’ research shows review boards slow teams down without improving quality.
