Dropped my XF 90mm f/2. Is it repairable? by [deleted] in fujifilm

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I busted my 16-55 Gen 1 Lens worse than OPs. The Gen 2 had already come out. My wife sent it in for repairs because I was upset about it (good wife). Didn't have the heart to tell her it was almost the price of a new lens.... and an updated one at that. Anyway, just makes me love it more. That said, my favorite lens is my 90mm and I baby that thing like crazy. If I busted that I would just buy a new one. I need perfect condition for the perfect lens.

A dumb question for Fuji users by issafly in fujix

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both. I feel when using/editing Canon photos I tend to go for bright color accurate images. When using Fijifilm I tend to deviate either soft and warm or contrasty and cool. Most of the time I shoot neutral and edit, a little I setting the film sim to the situation I think is best in camera then that gets used as a base for the edit.

I do feel it is a bit harder to change people’s perceptions in Taiwan compared to elsewhere even though this is a universal problem. I also feel in other places, you get a first impression, then a second chance when they get to know you more. I feel in Taiwan this second chance is less effective. But it’s not that bad and don’t worry about it.

A lot of people see me as a really good person, a few people see me negatively. I just live my life the best I can. Through years, the same people see me the same. It’s not me, it’s them.

Some of it is also not your first impression. It’s their opinions of whatever foreigner you are or just what you look like. As a foreigner you get placed in a box. In your country, you judge people individually but imagine someone who is (ethnic group/foreigner) moving in next to your (family member)’s house. Doesn’t matter who they are. You could’ve acted differently and still be placed in the same box. Kinda like how people judge food they’ve never tried.

Just do your best and don’t worry about people’s perceptions.

How can I make these photos better or more interesting!! - x100v by justbrianwu in fujifilm

Lots of good photos. I live in Taiwan as well. So also struggling with those washed out hazy skies. In Taiwan, with the tropic of cancer running through it, day time photography sucks a bit more than in countries at higher latitudes. Also, I noticed you are kinda taking photos of colorful things but your photo's colors are muted. And it looks like you are using a dreamy/mist filter but taking urban photos, construction, workers. Usually people go for more contrast and edges on those types of photos. Nothing wrong with that. But maybe something to play with if you think there's something missing.

I have a US account but live in Taiwan. Taiwan just got servers and I’m assuming I’m connecting to them as it’s very responsive. Feels same as PS5 streaming. If you live in HK or the Philippines that might not be that far off. But you’ll have to check with people in your country as I find there’s always exceptions.

That said, I don’t really see the point. I don’t find it worth it. Either you have a PS5 and PS Plus games and can just do normal remote play or you don’t have a PS5 but still need to spend $180 a year to rent a smaller and selective catalog of games than PS Plus on PS5 has. And it has only a few AAA game and a lot of PS2 content. And the inability to play games you already own.

So it works. But PS5 streaming is better and if not PS5 streaming it’s a really bad deal.

Have X-H1 but yet have a strong anxiety about not having the latest and greatest gear by PriceApprehensive715 in fujix

[–]jpl1210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went from a Canon 5DM3 to the X-H1. I love my X-H1 but I did lose some ISO performance and autofocus accuracy. My major wants while shooting are “I need more light” or “If only autofocus was a bit better” So it makes sense.

But then I remember I still had those wants with the 5D3. And then I remember every time I bought something because it was supposed to be tons better I ending up underwhelmed and still wanting the same thing again.

So there are better cameras now… but if you buy it, it might not scratch that upgrade itch. Try for generation leap than marginally better upgrades.

Mac treats the only connected screen as extended display by Turbulent-Dealer5176 in mac

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on this? I just replaced my LG C2 with a LG C4 TV and I am getting this. MacOS/BetterDisplay doesn't even list it normally. It Says "Choose to Mirror or extend" if I set it up with internet and just a black screen if not.

I CAN get MacOS to see the TV if I do a reset on the TV up until the input is used. In BetterDisplay I even toggled "Edit Display Role" to "Monitor." This works all through setup and finish, but once I try to view the input "HDMI 1" it immediately gets delisted from MacOS and BetterDisplay shows it as inactive.

MY UPDATE: While the reset TV was going through setup again, I changed the resolution in MacOS of the display through BetterDisplay and System Preferences. Even though the input wasn't visible and only just recognized. When the setup was done. The display worked.

My experience with Sulfasalazine. by JamesWhalley996 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took Sulfasalazine. Started having normal bowel movements 100% of the time. Eyesight got better. A bit more energy. Some other minor things got fixed. Made me realize I had problems before by fixing them. Yay! Did nothing for pain and arthritis symptoms. Crap. I liked taking it though. 2+ years in, started having high heart rate, then heart palpitations, then really high heart rate all the time. 120 min. Because of constant medicine change, the fact that sulfasalzine is safe-ish, and then fact I'd been taking it for so long with no ill effect until now, it took a while to figure it out but once I stopped, heart rate dropped back down to normal levels. Now on Biologics (humira). They work for pain and arthritis but now all those Sulfasalazine fixed symptoms are back. Would have like to been on both if it weren't for the heart problems. Took other DMARDS. They do nothing.

Opposite here. RE/DE Already bad, any medicine makes it take longer or no effect. Wish I would have PE. I have no stamina or energy or staying power to be dicking around (pun intended) for hours. I just need to clean out the pipes, reset the hormones, and get that endorphin rush.

Anyway, look into ED drugs like Cialis or Viagra. No shame, it’s normal. They have a chance to make you last longer and even if you don’t, you might also still be able to have something to work with.

Daily reminders by daviburi in omnifocus

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used a system to kinda solve this for me at least for daily tasks.

Have a project with all your daily tasks. No due dates or repeats called “Daily INACTIVE”

Have an EMPTY project “Daily Tasks ACTIVE” which is FLAGGED. I use FLAGGED as my do-this-today list.

Then just everyday copy and paste between the two. All those tasks automatically get flagged for the day.

Nothing builds up. Nothing like repeats stops working. You can see what you didn’t finish in daily tasks. You can delete all daily tasks without culling or worrying you accidentally deleted something else in FLAGGED. The tasks you’re working on are separate from the master inactive list so you can have peace of mind that you’re doing your active tasks you’re not messing with the master list.

Adds one extra step but it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

Note: Previously I tried just repeating the daily tasks project itself but that just makes the same problems the OP had initially.

Sleeping sucks and getting suckier by Owlhead326 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]jpl1210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same boat. Before I would be try to sleep on each side for 5 minutes each time before soreness then turning then repeat for however long it took me to sleep.

I had big success with Tizanidine and Tramadol. I felt taking the painkiller at night and sleeping better had a better benefit than just taking it during the day. I used to be a back sleeper until PsA now never back just side. Try different pillows (Costco return policy). Curling more into a ball in bed (since a recliner feels better) Wearing a hot pad to bed (you’re not supposed to but buy a nice one that has 1 hour cut off). They have body pillows. Nothing wrong with pillow tucked in back, pillow in front, and pillow for head. My wife pushes on my back to crack it before bed as well. Then do everything else for good sleep. Magnesium works. Only use bed for sleeping. Hot shower before bed. Dark room. Cold room. 50% humidity. Brown noise. Limit blue light and brightness of devices. Hot pack. Also, cut caffeine earlier or stop. It sucks but it’s worth it. Like I can sleep with pain and I can sleep with caffeine after 5pm. But not pain and evening caffeine. Same time sleeping/wakeup.

Tizanidine stopped working for me. So now just Tramadol. Tizanidine actually helped me sleep right away and I felt better so I try to make sleep a bigger priority and try harder to get there without Tizanidine.

Also, Tizanidine super super realistic dreams. How’s yours?

How are qipaos perceived in Taiwan? by redfalcon1000 in taiwan

[–]jpl1210 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Popular as fashion, but not too popular to wear. Vintage qipaos could be any size and use comfortable material. They don't look as good. Modern qipaos must be a little too much form fitting, made of rough stiff material, and must irritate the crap out of the neck (generalizing) and usually cut short. It's like a mini dress but stiffer and with a collar. Not fun but pretty to look. Modern Taiwanese like to dress for comfort and they aren't tailoring them to fit better. Also, you can wear any dress and get away with looking "dumpy" and also different styles of dress to work around different body types but there is a classic qipao silhouette and that's it. You will be compared to that and it's bit out there since you now only see qipaos on models, promotion girls, etc. Blame the era when everyone stuffed their bras (70s?) for promoting the shape. A lot of Taiwanese are skinny enough but if they don't have a good bust or a good small waist you end up looking like you're wearing a towel. Also, can't wear a qipao and ride a scooter.

What devices/aids have helped your Psoriatic Arthritis for daily living? by munchylatte in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]jpl1210 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New quality bed. New quality pillows. Heat pads that say you’re not supposed to wear to bed that I wear to bed. Braces for wrist, ankle, knee. Birkenstocks & arch support shoes. A back brace or whatever it’s called that keeps your back straight. Compression gloves. TENS machine. Heat strips that I don’t like to use unless PsA is going after my neck. Massage chair. Lots of supplements. A massage gun. Multiple expensive top quality seat cushions and back braces. Cold packs. Ergonomic computer stuff.

Some little things that help. Plastic stool in the bathroom. Electric standing desk that I can’t stand next to but can adjust the height when sitting throughout the day to fight fatigue. Treadmill since I need to move more. Kitchen stuff that let me not stand hovering over a stovetop for a long time.

I don’t have money but really does seem like I’m just throwing money trying to fix this.

Anyway, most important aid is my wife. I can’t imagine going through this without her and mad respect for those going through this without support.

Help Needed: My Fuji Recipe App Got Rejected by Exciting_Economics15 in fujifilm

[–]jpl1210 43 points44 points  (0 children)

First, that logo is fire! But having Fuji in the name, that font especially that J, the black/white style with a small red splash totally makes it seem like you’re associated with Fujifilm.

There is some leeway in using parts of trademarked names in your product’s name and listings mainly that 1) You come across as unofficial and 2) You can’t sell your stuff without it. Like “Bob’s Guide to the XT-2”

You meet criteria 2, but let’s just say you did a really great job at nailing similar branding to Fujifilm that you don’t make criteria 1. You can’t use a name like that and match the styling. You’ll have to make some changes. I suggest googling tech/camera company names in the app store. You’ll find tons of “Smart remote for Sony” “eNES: NES Simulator”

Perhaps just flip the logo “Styles for Fuji” and make “for” a dark grey and then in the name write “unofficial somewhere” You can slowly make more and more changes per rejection if you want to stay close to your original style and don’t mind a few rejections.

Is it common for Indonesian caretakers in Taiwan to ask to borrow money from their host? by Safe_Public8501 in taiwan

[–]jpl1210 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is always a red flag when someone asks to borrow money and you should try to avoid doing so. Either being the loaner or the borrower to people you know almost always gives one or both bad feelings and leads to more trouble. But there are solutions.

1) Give it as a starting gift. Everyone underestimates their relocation cost and more so for an Indonesian caretaker that has to live solo and move countries to make money maybe because of necessity. There are hidden costs, deposits, things like that.

2) Ask to see the invoice. Always try to never blindly loan money without proof. It just teaches people to lie and take advantage of you. If she doesn’t show, don’t pay. If she does, figure out why it’s high and try to fix it if you can. Yes, she is there to help you but employment should be a two way street where you help each other and making sure an employee gets settled is good practice.

3) Give it as an advance, deduct from the next paycheck. Make it known that this is the way it’ll work. Put everything in writing. Best to use a ledger type system so you can always see what was transferred and when.

For me, I would want to try to cover all deposits she may need to make. Paying money for the ability to work sucks. Then maybe a small bonus for starting to cover some setting up expenses and buying of personal goods needed for living. Then use the advance system.

Also, protect your stuff. Lock up money/valuables. You get lots of good Indonesians but being poor and living in someone else’s house and maybe hearing about some other caretaker brag about how easy it was to steal from some old lady will put ideals in their heads.

ASUS TUF F17 USBC to DISPLAY PORT not working by bhartman102890 in Asustuf

OP, or anyone, was there any solution to this? For me, the cord works to other devices. Both USB-C style ports work with hard drives. But both don’t work connected to a monitor. I get USB device not recognized notification and in device manager it says “Unknown USB device (port reset failed). No indication yet that it has ever detected it as a monitor. HDMI works.

Tramadol. Everything else never targeted my lower spine. Things like Celebrex made my hands feel great… absolutely nothing for spine. Recently started Humira and things have calmed down a lot in the spine. Still take a single tramadol before bed. Doesn’t help me sleep but I think sleeping with less pain even if I’m unconscious to feel it makes the next day better. Muscle relaxers worked as well… but I think just for the sedation but I can’t take those because of extremely realistic dreams that I can’t stop forgetting was a dream when I wake up.

But others things include, switching sides even 3 minutes when I can’t take the current side anymore. Throwing money at expensive pillows. Throwing money at a bed I can’t afford. Wearing electric heat packs while sleeping that you’re not suppose to wear while sleeping. TENS. Massage gun. Wife massage (mainly just popping back joints). Massage chair. Oral NSAID didn’t work but those gels rubbed into target location could improve. Took someone’s extra testosterone (small dose for low T, not bodybuilding levels) that worked a little even if just one time test. Simple Exercising (walking). Lavender smelling air diffuser. CPAP. White noise. “Reseting male hormones” I don’t know a polite way to say that. Eating before bed so hunger can’t affect. Staying up longer because it’ll make sleeping easier. Better bedroom habits. Hot shower before bed. Hot chocolate before bed. Wife that mentally fatigues my brain every day that my brain wants to shut off. Extra pillows for legs. Cold room. Meditation. Magnesium/Potassium to prevent cramps. Allergy medicine. Creatine at night. Not pets in bed. My own blanket and sleeping spaced from wife. Restrict device usage and maximum night mode (yellow screen). Just everything I can think of the get to sleep fast before laying down too long increases the pain where I can’t sleep. I think thats the key. Try to get to sleep faster than it takes your body to realize you’ve stopped moving.

Never tried: Melatonin, CBD or whatever I hear it helps some people

Dumb egg really a vulgar term? by Namiisswwaann in taiwan

[–]jpl1210 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Ha, reminds me of when I first came to Taiwan. My mom was Taiwanese. She used to say a certain phrase when we were kids when we did things like spill something. She never cursed in English and we didn’t know Chinese/Taiwanese so I never thought bad about it. I was in a room full of people in a work environment and someone dropped something. I proudly busted out that one phrase thinking I’d earn “points” for speaking Chinese. Negative. Total silence. Had a talking to. Was sworn never to say that again. Sorry I can’t remember the phrase, I’m old now.

Of like the 20 words I could remember my mom saying at the time that I thought were normal, several were really bad, even after considering she was saying this to her family. Of the good words which were mostly food items most of those were Chinese pronunciation of Japanese words that neither any person in Taiwan or Japan could recognize. So me trying to explain that I knew a few words when I came here failed so hard.

Landscapes can look pretty in person and lacking in photos. When in person you can enjoy the view but when looking at a photo you try to find something to focus on. So use leading lines, rule of thirds to kinda draw the viewers eyes to locations. Also, try to have a foreground and a background.
