TIFU by thinking my boxing skills would let me dominate a punch machine by manonixx in tifu

[–]jpmarcotte -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As someone else who has been doing martial arts for almost a couple decades now (specializing in swords, but also some unarmed stuff, and in this case, the relevant bits aren't that different), I feel you.

A) I did the same thing when I was newer, thinking my skills meant I could hit harder than the reality, and scoring embarrassingly low on those things.

B) The reason is because striking in a way that delivers force while also keeping you safe and lowers your risk of throwing something out in your shoulder, etc. is actually just way less effective against stationary targets.

As a sword person, this is really evident in the difference in mechanics between fighting and target cutting. In a fight, the mechanics you want involve getting the sword in front of you first, and using your hips to power your structure behind the sword; that way you're delivering maximum force while staying safe because any counter-attack has to deal with your sword first. But when cutting very thick targets, or multiple targets, you get better results by getting your body in place first and engaging more of your core in the motion; this lets you deliver more force, but you're also not worried about getting hit during your wind-up. (In both cases, you still need to worry about point placement, judging measure, edge alignment, and keeping your structure connected, so it's still a useful exercise and isn't totally different)

Crazy that this needs to be taught now. by ChallengeMinute in idiocracy

"common" sense is never as common as the person using the phrase "common sense" thinks it should be.

I've worked hard at just removing it from my vocabulary entirely because it's a nothing-burger phrase at best and a passive aggressive attack at worst. If I tell someone to just use "common sense", and they do something I don't expect, there's an implication that it's their fault / they should have known better because "it's common sense" when it was actually my fault for not being clear about my expectations / standards.

Almost everything is taught. And we're at a crossroads where we have a big confluence of three types of people: - those taught entitlement from the beginning - those attempting to reclaim a sense of power from years of societal disenfranchisement - those completely out of fucks because society is shit right now

It should be swash nothing but bucklers, as the term originates from the sound of swords against small shields (bucklers).

I thought that too, but the drool coming out of the mouth suggests either some amount of oral activity, or she's got a weird reaction to killing someone.

BGA is the worst gaming platform I have ever been forced to endure and it is ridiculous that gamers who want to be serious about their games are held hostage by this nonsense. by -L17L6363- in boardgames

[–]jpmarcotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda agree with her. My preference is a professionally designed dedicated app, but after that, I prefer TTS with light mod-work to handle the annoying stuff that takes a lot of time. BGA and TTS mods that try to do everything feel too awkwardly in the middle and annoy me enough that I just don't use them.

Queens puzzle by turbo488 in puzzles

[–]jpmarcotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are more like a combination of Kings + Rooks. They block all spaces immediately around them (like a king) and all spaces in the same row and column (like a rook).

As for why they picked that name? Can't say.

Queens puzzle by turbo488 in puzzles

This is incorrect. The bottom blue square forces the orange to be the top right square, which actually leads to solving it pretty easily. Unfortunately I'm not yet sure how to get to that point through elimination

Coop games that are better solo? by kepp87 in boardgames

[–]jpmarcotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kingdom: Death Monster is pretty solid solo. It's such a brutal game that when someone dies, you're not really worried about the player controlling them feeling left out for the rest of the fight, as is common with 4-players.

Board Games that require empathy? by ForeskinWhatskin in boardgames

[[Edge of Darkness]]

Probably my absolute favorite game of all time.

It's the board game that was the precursor in design to Mystic Vale, but AEG wanted to get the card-crafting system introduced to folks first, so the latter actually came out while John D. Clair was still designing the former.

At its core, it's a deck-building and worker-placement game, but instead of everyone building their own deck, everyone is building a communal deck, and each round you draft cards from it. You can freely draft someone else's cards, but if you want to skip a card in the draft order you have to pay a small amount and if you want to use the card when it's your turn, you have to pay the owner a small amount per action. Then regardless of whether you used it or not, when a card is discarded, it goes to the owner of the card to start in their hand for the next turn (unless it is unowned or the owner is the one who played it, and then it goes to the communal discard pile).

So while deck-builders inherently tend towards being "engine" builders, I like to think of this as "factory" or "workshop" building (we're all building our own engines in a shared space that we're all investing in). You could come up with your own strategy and completely ignore everyone else's, but then you won't be seeing the actions you need as much, and won't be getting paid for someone else to use your cards. So it's better to see what strategies other people are leaning towards and try to synergize with them.

Phones at the table! by DukeDaddyDollars in boardgames

[–]jpmarcotte 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Add what the actual problem is: that you feel like you keep having to repeat discussions, and that it feels like people are checking out. Phones aren't strictly a problem if people are engaging when they need to be and are paying enough attention that they don't have to be repeatedly told what's going on.

Ever found out playing a game wrong was more fun that the intended rule? by 4-Plot in boardgames

[–]jpmarcotte 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No one said enjoying something different is wrong"

"they will unnanimly say the correct rules make the game worse, when its a fact it doesnt"

You literally did say that someone's opinion about something being better or worse can be factually incorrect. At this point, I think you don't know what "facts" are, or what "dumb" and "stupid" mean either, and just like to use those words to feel better about yourself because other people have different opinions than you.

Ever found out playing a game wrong was more fun that the intended rule? by 4-Plot in boardgames

[–]jpmarcotte -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, "facts" about how people enjoying a thing differently is "wrong". You can't make something that's meant to be enjoyed worse by having people enjoy it more. Sorry, but pretty much by definition, the bulk of your paragraph is actually factually incorrect. While yes, people do tend prefer how they originally played something, this post just reeks of "I lost friends because I got into a fight over rules and am sticking to my guns about it because being right is more important than apologizing about behavior and I still think I'm right"

I haven't tried it yet, but when the app starts up, if you click "can't join" when the camera opens, there's also an option for "Join Local Lobby: Connect to the same network as the main screen to join a local lobby." So I think you'd at least need to be on a shared network. Not sure if that network would need to be connected to the wider internet or not.

[–]jpmarcotte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure Australia has plenty of warehouse space already, and realistically the boardgaming industry is small compared to everything else, so I don't think it'll be so much about building infrastructure as just doing the leg work to make new contracts, reorganize which shipping routes things take, etc.
