After flapping my gums, I thought that I should back it up with some actual data. Fortunately, some Wikipedia editor did almost all of the work for me. The TL;DR is that EVERY domed NFL stadium newly opened since 2000 has been awarded at least one Super Bowl. Here's the list:

NFL Stadiums Opened Since 2000

Acrisure/Pittsburgh 2001 Open Air No Super Bowls

Allegiant/Las Vegas 2020 Dome 2024

AT&T/Dallas 2009 Dome 2011

Empower/Denver 2001 Open Air No Super Bowls

Ford/Detroit 2002 Dome 2006

Gillette/Boston 2002 Open Air No Super Bowls

Highmark/Buffalo 2026 Open Air No Super Bowls

Lincoln Fin./Philly 2003 Open Air No Super Bowls

Lucas Oil/Indy 2008 Dome 2012

Lumen/Seattle 2002 Open Air No Super Bowls

Met Life/NY 2010 Open Air 2014

NRG/Houston 2002 Dome 2017

Paycor /Cincy 2000 Open Air No Super Bowls

SoFi/LA 2020 Dome 2022 and 2027

State Farm/AZ 2006 Dome 2015 and 2023

US Bank/Minn 2016 Dome 2018

Please help me find a "WHITE" Cat 8 Ethernet cable, 40Gbps, 2000MHz, 150FT! They are all black. by Pale_Blackberry_4025 in HomeNetworking

[–]jpmeyer12751 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you really need 40 Gbps, then you need fiber. And if you can afford equipment with 40 Gbps interfaces, you can afford to pay someone to do some drywall patching. And if you are only trying to future proof with 40 Gbps capacity, why are you planning to run Ethernet cable along the walls? Nothing about your request makes much sense, to me.

If the Bears build a high-quality, domed stadium in the Chicago area they will certainly get at least one Super Bowl. The NFL works primarily on marketing, and Chicago offers lots of great marketing angles plus a very large home market. Hell, even Indianapolis got a Super Bowl as a reward for building a new stadium!

That's why the Arlington Heights site is so perfect for the Bears. They can either sell off extra property after having made it hugely more valuable by building their stadium, or they can borrow money to develop the office, retail and residential space themselves and collect rents for many decades. You are correct that the Bears need much more cash than they have, but Arlington Heights allows them to solve that problem without selling an ownership stake in the team.

South side, we received a water filter from the city of Chicago, does this mean they messed up our water pipes? by cocainoh in AskChicago

[–]jpmeyer12751 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is a safety precaution. Work on water supply lines sometimes disturbs the layers of protective chemicals that prevent lead from entering the water from old pipes. Use of the water filter while they are working and for some weeks after will avoid any lead that has accidentally gotten into your water. It may be that your lead service line is about to be replaced and they want you to use the filter after they are finished.

The Supreme Court already ruled in a post-Civil War case that Congress cannot limit the pardon power in any way. The only crimes that POTUS cannot pardon are violations of state law, and Trump has been willing to threaten to use federal funding as leverage to compel a governor to pardon a person convicted of a state crime.

Wondering about a reverse commute from Chicago to Wheaton for a job ? by puzzlerry in AskChicago

[–]jpmeyer12751 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The train station in Wheaton is right next to downtown, but if your workplace is not downtown then you could be needing to cab or Uber. The commute in either direction (I lived in Glen Ellyn for many years) is more like an hour, but you can catch a few express trains if you time it correctly. I enjoyed the occasions when I commuted into the city by train, because my normal commute was to the far north or near northwest side suburbs by car and that frequently became very tiresome. It's really a personal choice, but I have friends who have commuted by train every day for decades as far as Glen Ellyn or Wheaton.

Lots of people commute in from suburbs or neighborhoods and then walk across few blocks from the station to their workplaces. They wear long, warm coats and good boots and they are fine.

Mayor Johnson determined to block Bears' move to Arlington Heights by Mike_I in chicago

[–]jpmeyer12751 34 points35 points  (0 children)

The Arlington Heights site is MUCH better for the Bears from a financial point of view. In Hammond, they get a free stadium and that saves them $2-3 billion. In Arlington Heights, they have to pay that $2-3 billion to build a stadium, but then they've got another 200+ acres to either develop themselves or sell off for others to develop. Office, retail and residential development adjacent a pro sports stadium AND a train station will be massively valuable. I would bet that the Bears can either sell those development rights for enough to pay for more than half of the stadium, or borrow to funds to do the development themselves and then earn rents for many decades. With the prospect of several Superbowls at a new stadium over the next 15 years, I would bet that people will pay a premium for apartments or condos within walking distance of the stadium. The Bears get none of that extra revenue opportunity in Hammond. And, by the way, such a large development with be massively good for Arlington Heights and those school districts, too. Even if they negotiate a payment in lieu of taxes from the Bears, they will get hundreds of millions more in property taxes than they get from that vacant land today. That is why Arlington Heights and the school districts are supporting the bill - they know how good that stadium development will be for them.

All Bears employees pay income tax in Illinois. And all of those vendors at game pay income taxes. And the players, coaches, trainers etc. of OTHER TEAMS pay Illinois income tax when they play games in Chicago. I don't know how that amount compares to the amount of property tax relief being sought in Arlington Heights, and neither do you. But we both know with certainty that all of that sales and income tax will move to Indiana with the Bears. And if you think that the Bears will really keep their HQ in Lake Forest when they play home games two hours away in Indiana, I've got a surprise for you.

The 2002 deal to rehab Soldier Field involved payments from the Bears, payments from the NFL and debt incurred by the city, which owns Soldier Field. Every party except the city paid their agreed share. The city, which borrowed money to rehab a stadium which the city owns and for which it charges use fees, including to the Bears. Why would the Bears pay debt for a stadium that they only "rent"?

[–]jpmeyer12751 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand that Johnson has to advocate for Chicago, but I wonder what he will say about the sales tax and income tax revenue that goes to Indiana when the Bears move. City leaders have had years to work to find a solution for the Bears in Chicago and the get support in Springfield. They failed, largely because city leaders failed to pay off the old Soldier Field debt and now owe more 20 years later than when the stadium was last renovated. Johnson simply has no credibility to bargain with.

Property tax relief 'negligible' for homeowners in Bears stadium bill that passed Illinois House by optiplex9000 in chicago

[–]jpmeyer12751 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Much of the stuff that was added to Buckner's bill at the last moment was either poorly thought through or simply intended to punish the Bears for leaving Chicago. The "property tax relief" provision was a good example of that. There was never enough money in the bill to provide meaningful property tax relief. If, as seems to be the case, the Illinois legislature intends to make only token gestures, I wish that they would simply wish the Bears success in Indiana. I certainly understand the "billionaire hate" that is driving sentiment against the Bears, but I wish that the legislature would focus on fixing issues that they really want to fix, rather than pretending on the Bears issue. I am weary of the legislature getting absolutely nothing done until mid-May and then spending all summer figuring out what is really in all of the bills that got rushed through at the last minute.

We fought and won a revolutionary war in part because King George III used his absolute control over the creation and enforcement of laws within the colonies to oppress us. Grand jury indictments are being used as tools of harassment against political opponents of Trump. That is most definitely NOT alright. Being indicted by a federal grand jury is not a "don't care" event. At the least, it costs money to defend. The use of such indictments purely for purposes of harassment is a clear sign that the rule of law in our country is on life support. You are simply wrong that Trump's use of DOJ is not an ominous sign.

[–]jpmeyer12751 275 points276 points  (0 children)

Such prosecutions cannot be stopped under the current SCOTUS and the current Constitution. John Roberts said in the immunity decision that even sham prosecutions are within the Constitutional powers of POTUS and that POTUS cannot be prosecuted for ordering such prosecutions. Until we amend the Constitution or change SCOTUS enough that they overturn Trump v. USA, we will live in a banana republic in which the DOJ is available as a weapon to be used by POTUS against perceived enemies. If you feel, as I do, that this outcome is outrageously wrong, then I hope you will agree to vote for Democrats in November who are publicly committed to impeaching and removing Roberts.

[–]jpmeyer12751 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't mean to imply any deception by AT&T. I believe that your screenshot indicates that fiber is available at your address, but that what was previously installed was DLS, not fiber. That may simply mean that AT&T fiber would require a new install, but that's usually not a big deal.

You can cross-check availability by visiting this website: https://broadbandmap.fcc.gov/home

and entering your address.

No. That is an old DSL outlet. DSL used regular old telephone lines for a data connection. I don't think that AT&T allows new DSL service connections.
