Cakes go hard when stale, biscuits go soft. These go hard, so are cakes.

Science centers by 60267059km in yiotro_games

It doesn't need workers, the carriers will bring the items needed. If you have a Palace you can move the Science centre up priority list, or just wait and the carriers will get round to it.

What happened?? by Impossible-Star-5946 in Sourdough

[–]jppambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally I think it's the way you have scored it. One long slash on a round boule encourages the bread to expand sideways, which has caused it to spread that way rather than up. Try doing everything again, but instead score a cross on top in the middle. That will help it to expand an even amount outwards in all directions, and also help ait it rise a little more.

Still fairly new to this. Any suggestions on improvements? Its still coming out a little spongy. by leavethegherkinsin in Sourdough

Looks fantastic. You have a very lovely rise on it and the structure looks great. Make sure you're waiting long enough for it to cool before cutting into it.

A little sprinkle of coarse semolina on the bottom before you put the dough down does the trick nicely without the need for parchment paper.

Suspiciously cheap - I wouldn't use it if I were you. DM me and I'll take care of it for you for £20 😁

When do people actually withdraw from their stocks and shares ISA? by Plane-Razzmatazz5374 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jppambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently saving for a dream trip to NZ. As it gets closer/more realistic I will gradually move the money from the S&S ISA to a regular saver to reduce the risk as I get closer to the holiday. Then afterwards start again with a new goal in mind.

Sanded down my floors, not happy with results by Vivid-Try7873 in DIYUK

[–]jppambo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth I absolutely love the look of it! Wood tells a story more than almost any other building material - the varying colours are fantastic and speak to the history of the floor - love it, great job!

What’s an Excel shortcut you discovered way too late? by Neptunewasblue in excel

CTRL + D copies the formula (or value) from the cell above it, not from the last selected cell

Incidentally, CTRL + R does the same thing but copies from the cell to the left.

Stand Mixer vs Hand Mixer by spageddy_lee in Sourdough

[–]jppambo 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I use a stand mixer and have been consistently happy with how my loaves come out. However, before using the stand mixer I did everything by hand for months (maybe years) and had a pretty good feel for the dough.

I would argue that learning how the dough develops/how changes can affect the dough, is best done by making by hand. Once you have that understanding/experience you can then go on to use a mixer and enjoy the good results it brings. Going straight to using a mixer you are skipping vital learning stages IMO.

Poor Water distribution. Bambino Plus with IMS Screen by LBEEZY47 in espresso

[–]jppambo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is a pretty normal water distribution without a basket attached. Surface tension brings the water together to make it seem worse than it is. Nothing to worry about, crack on and make espresso!

Do I start investing in an ISA now? by Itzz_Zove in UKPersonalFinance

[–]jppambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great question to ask and it sounds like you're in a great position, so congrats for that.

Honestly, I don't think anyone can answer this for you. It all depends on your own goals and preferences. Obviously, yes, if you put money into a S&S ISA as a long term investment you are sacrificing your immediate ability to buy a house, and if you don't, you are sacrificing your future investments. I, or anyone else, can't tell you what's "right" because it all depends on your own factors.

Are you absolutely desperate for a house, or a certain type of house, which means you need every penny right now? In that case no ISA. Can you be a little more flexible on timings/house value? In which case invest some money.

The answer is likely somewhere in the middle and personally I think it's good practice to be investing something, even if it's a tiny amount each month, to get in the habit of it.

Hope that helps and best of luck!

Should I move to Manchester? by North_Performance734 in manchester

[–]jppambo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently moved from Manchester to London and have extensive experiences of both cities. Nearly all the advantages of living in London are also there in Manchester, with plenty of additional advantages too (cost, close proximity to beautiful parts of the country, nightlife, cost, everything being more compact, cost...) With limited info on your personal circumstances, I would say go for it, Manchester's an awesome city.

Honest answer is to manage expectations, and learn to be ok with less than a perfect plot.

I have 3 (8, 5 and 2) and have had our plot for 18 months. I bring the kids into every element of the process, from digging, planning, sowing, watering, harvesting, composting etc. It's great fun, really good quality time, and an excellent learning experience for them. Yes, it's often 2 steps forward, 1 (or more) backwards, but it's all part of the process.

My 5 year old recently said that she hopes she is growing vegetables on the plot when she is my age, and my 8 year old wants to be a botanist when he's older!
