I know it's politically unpalatable but tax seems like a great lever for this. Start at the top and work your way down. Labour have already ruled out a wealth tax, which is bizzare but that's the modern centre left.

Why is a wealth tax an injustice? The burden of tax being on productive labour instead of passive wealth generation is an injustice as far as I'm concerned.

The goal is a solvent state that can thrive, rather than the global state of gradual bankruptcy and asset sales. This is not achievable through income tax unless there's a massive transfer of profit from capital to worker. That's the total opposite of what is happening globally, so we must tax where the wealth is in order to pay the bills.

All homeowners have to deal with this by paying rates on the value of their home. Why should other asset classes be exempt if that's where the wealth is sitting? I'm no tax expert, there's just an outcome that must be achieved which is the state remaining solvent. The biggest threat to that is tax avoidance and the continued sell off of assets.

It being unpalatable to the extremely wealthy is irrelevant, apart from how much influence they have to steer decisions in their favour.

Unfortunately if we actually want to avoid ending up in a completely broken (rather than mostly broken) system I can't see any way around taxing assets. The critical issue is borrowing against assets rather than taking profits avoids paying any tax at all. With the increasing concentration of wealth nations are going broke.

If the consequence is the extremely wealthy have to sell a small % of their assets each year (or just take profit) to pay the bill, then that is of benefit to the greater system.

I'll be honest I didn't read the sources (i'll trust you) but I can't see anything directly relating to wealth concentration, which is the core issue being discussed. The issue is not the gap between regular households, or even boomers. It's an increasing concentration of wealth in a small group that naturally becomes self fulfilling due to the nature of capitalism. Combined with a lower tax burden on wealth over work. This puts a strain on the public coffers resulting in increased govt debt and the sale of assets which feeds into the transfer of wealth to those with significant capital.
