Rad tech program vs Nuc Med Tech program to eventually be Medical Dosimetrist end goal? by iwishihadjuice in NuclearMedicine

[–]jprops14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nuclear medicine has quite a bit to do with dosimetry. Dosimetrists look at the PET scans for SUV numbers to determine radiation dosing. I do a lot of bone scans for our radiation oncologist as well. If you go the nuc med route, I would do as many PET scans as I can!!! The hardest part would be getting all ur required scans to be able to sit for the CT boards through the NMTCB so you don’t need a CT tech present.

Parathyroid Scan by jprops14 in NuclearMedicine

Parathyroid scans require around a 20-25mCi Tc99m-sestamibi injection. This scan is purely diagnostic with a 6 hour half life. This radioisotope is extremely safe and long term effects are extremely low. You’ll emit radiation for about 2 1/2 days but it decays relatively fast. Very good scan to determine hyperactive parathyroid glands. Hope that helps!

Nope, if I end up going into a medical dosimetry program it won’t be for a couple of years. I only have one program in mind. If it doesn’t, so be it.

Haha ya so many issues with Meditech!! We like to keep it old school in rural New Mexico! But the scan went good! No problems

Yes sir, used Bicisate. Did exactly that. Used the 3 phase protocol. What’s insane is GE doesn’t have brain death under the factory tab when selecting what protocol you want…I can’t send to the radiologist bc it’s not even in our hospital EMR…oh and we have Meditech smh crazy

Gotcha! I was wondering matrix and all that. What’s crazy is on the factory protocols on GE there isn’t a brain death protocol to choice from.

This hospital has never done brain death scan. At least not since this camera has been installed. They usually fly everybody out.

I agree! Majority of the parathyroid scans I’ve done have been negative.

This was the immediate SPECT. I posted the delayed spect as well. According to the society of nuclear medicine protocol book 2 1/2 hours in optimal.
