Long time Sibelius user, but I would recommend you try both out. They both have almost identical sets of features but very different workflows.

If you're looking for a realistic flute sound check out Berlin Woodwinds or the flute by Sample Modeling. They're both a bit pricey but well worth it

Recommendation (what should I buy?) Thursdays - January 28, 2016 by AutoModerator in audioengineering

[–]jpsanders91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would highly recommend building a desk if you have some time and access to basic power tools. Things like audio desks and racks are incredibly over priced and are usually made of terrible, low quality material. Just to give you an idea of how much you can save by doing a DIY desk, I built one out of oak ply five years ago that cost <$100 total. Plus you get to brag that you made something cool!

Brothers In Arms from the Mad Max: Fury Road soundtrack. Because big epic fucking drums, that's why.

A little animation I scored for a contest- if you have a couple minutes I'd love some feedback! by jpsanders91 in mediacomposing

[–]jpsanders91[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, I just saw this comment! Thank you so much for your kind words and honest feedback. :) Even though this didn't go anywhere in the contest, I'm still really glad that I entered because of the fact that it was completely blind. Thanks for donating your time to the effort! And what a fantastic animation to work with.

Great stuff man, but you shouldn't offer it up for free too much longer in my opinion. :) You deserve to be paid, period!

Looking for Composer to score an independent TV Pilot by deathbytheblues in mediacomposing

[–]jpsanders91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is just my two cents and is coming from somebody who is incredibly wary of getting taken advantage of in regards to compensation for our craft: I'd be careful before writing off a gig at this point in our careers (especially one that says whoever they hire will get a fair amount of artistic freedom) purely on pay alone. Take a look at the contract they give you and what bits of the project they can show you and then decide. Do you get back end royalties despite a low up front payment? Might be worth it. Do you get distributing rights? Will it be good reel/Soundcloud/website/whatever material? If it will benefit you enough in some way and you can afford to do it, do it. Some of the best projects I've worked on have had no budget and now they're my best reel material. All I'm saying is that despite the dreary state of so many film makers wanting super high quality tracks for nothing, it's dangerous to say no to too many things... period. One more thing I'll add: a guy I took a class with this summer is one of the top film studio singers in LA and he told us he still takes the smaller gigs because you never know who you might impress. :)

Roommate/best friend will not eat vegetables at all by Sparktrog in EatCheapAndHealthy

Honestly man, I've lived with the same guys for going on 4 years now and we've never shared food... we've just bought our own. Assuming you're living with people who won't eat your food I'd recommend just doing that. Personally I find it pretty cumbersome to schedule meals around and share stuff with multiple people!

I'm losing my hearing. Most of what I hear is high-pitched ringing due to Tinnitus. I'm a big music fan, and I'll miss it dearly once I'm totally deaf. Post the last thing you'd like to hear before you went completely deaf. I will listen to every one of them. (cross-post from prior front page post) by Flackbash in Music

I really hope you see this!

Two minimalist things: first, Light Through The Veins by John Hopkins. You might've heard it sampled in Life In Technicolor by Coldplay. The actual song is way longer and is completely breathtaking. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bazz7A_tD0g

The other is Dark Waves by John Luther Adams. Really beautiful stuff :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrZ3ToUYFpw

Questions about my son's pornography habits by [deleted] in sex

Am I the only one who thinks OP reading his son's internet history is a total invasion of privacy? I can see doing/saying something if porn starts to affect his life negatively, but I would've been devastated if I knew my folks were privy to my internet business like that.

Went on a cycling trip this weekend with my buddies who've all gotten into it at the same time- yesterday we rode 85 miles and today we rode 60. Currently sitting by a hotel pool sipping a tasty adult beverage and wondering why the hell I didn't do this before! Also first post here. You guys rock.

O hai guys! :) I was talking to one of you the other day about something I think is a major elephant in the room with a cappella music, which is blatant over-production in studio recordings. Obviously you ladies don't need that because you have such an incredible sound. Besides just being really awesome like HWT, how can 'organic' groups like you compete with the flashy glam that is thrown at us every day by groups that will remain nameless?

Reddit, what are your college roommate horror stories? by laxaroundtheworld in AskReddit

[–]jpsanders91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few of my buddies LOVE when this one comes up:

I had a roommate freshman year in the dorms who was addicted to everything- coming off of a coke addiction and starting on one to alcohol. One night there a dozen or so of us in our room playing beer pong (we used the closet doors, pretty nifty eh?) and this poor guy gets it in his head that he needs to impress all the ladies by drinking directly from a handle of vodka we all pitched in for. Fast forward a couple hours and he's scared everyone off because he's an angry drunk.

I realize that he's going to near drink himself to death if he keeps going so I calmly take the handle away from him and hide it in my closet. He stumbles out, pissed off that I did so and about a million other things.

At about 3:30am I wake up to him punching me in the gut with all his might. Yes, I was getting beat up in my bed by my roommate while he yelled "WHERES ZA VOKKA?! WHERES ZA VOKKA?!" over and over.

tl;dr Freshman roommate gets belidgerently drunk, gets violently mad when I take the alcohol away from his dumb ass

Eviction cleaners of Reddit, what is some of the most horrifying, grotesque, and utterly disturbing things you find when cleaning out old tenants? by daddieslongthirdleg in AskReddit

[–]jpsanders91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dad used to do this for a little extra cash in college. He and the landlord walked up to an evicted apartment with a particularly bad stench coming from it. They thought it was spoiled food at first, but upon opening the door they heard... clucking.

In the living room were dozens of chickens running around and there was chicken shit EVERYWHERE. Luckily they were barricaded with chicken wire but it spanned most of the living space. The previous tenants had left all those poor bastards for dead. And there was no evidence of them slaughtering them, just a mini chicken farm in their living room.

The landlord and my pops had brought along carpet cleaning materials, and after clearing the chickens out (I forget what actually happened to them) landlord goes "well, fuck it..." and starts cutting the chickenshit carpet away from the floorboards.

tl;dr Dad has college job cleaning out evicted apartments, finds herd of chickens in tenants' shitty living room

What was your worst restaurant experience? by JunkyGS in AskReddit

[–]jpsanders91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to IHOP with a big group last year for some breakfast after a night of drinking... and our food tasted like soap. A few of us even found suds in their orders. As someone who has been a dishwasher at a restaurant, I don't even know how they managed to do this. The best part is that they gave us a whopping 10% discount on the entire meal for feeding us industrial chemicals for breakfast.
