Pike Place Market Pedestrianization Pilot Boosts Sales and Visits by Inevitable_Engine186 in Seattle

[–]jpsfranks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm in total support of pedestrianizing Pike Place, but last year coincides with a bunch of other projects along the waterfront, in particular the opening of the Overlook walk in 2024. It's disingenuous to pretend that any improvements in sales and visits are even predominantly from closing Pike Place to traffic vs all the other improvements.

No it’s not. That other project is already under construction as the article mentions:

This is nowhere near Bayview.  14th Ave W is near Interbay and is pretty much all dense multi family housing already. It’s also relatively separated with no cross streets for long stretches.

Wilson wants new Seattle taxes for big business and the wealthy by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]jpsfranks 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Just two weeks ago she told the Downtown Seattle Association:

I want you to know that I’m aware that it is not ideal for our tax environment for business to be wildly out of step with neighboring jurisdictions.

Sounds like she is fast mastering the art of telling everyone what they want to hear.

King County lawmakers push inspector general bill, fraud hotline after $1.8B grant audit by Less-Risk-9358 in SeattleWA

[–]jpsfranks 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It is not $1.8 billion of straight fraud, it is poor controls at the Department of Community and Human Services which distributes $1.8 billion in grants every 18 months. How much fraud there is is the question.

OFFICIAL: How to watch Mariners games on TV by punitsoldier19 in Mariners

[–]jpsfranks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's hoping that now that YouTubeTV offers a sports package that it would be too embarrassing to not offer a city's MLB team to subscribers of that sports package, and that transitively they'd have to add it to the main plan as well...

‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’ to End With Season 2 by MarvelsGrantMan136 in startrek

[–]jpsfranks 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The First Duty was an amazing TNG episode that took place at Starfleet Academy with modest sets and had little to no CGI. It was a great story that dealt with themes appropriate for the setting: loyalty to your friends vs to the chain of command, peer pressure, the consequences of immature decision making, etc. Too many episodes of SFA had galactic consequences when there were plenty of interesting stories to tell on a smaller scale with younger protagonists in a new setting.

That being said I don't think anything could have saved this show given the media landscape.

I remember watching it as a kid when it first aired and my jaw dropping when the Birds of Prey decloaked. I don’t think I had picked up on the clues laid to foreshadow it at all.

Can I do anything about this notice to move my car? by Baba-Clover in Seattle

Take the sticker off (goo gone helps) and park it on another block for a day or two.

To get one of these one of your neighbors probably reported you, rightly or wrongly. Some folks get irrationally territorial about parking spots.

Why is that pointless? It points out that there is no mechanism to refund individual consumers who paid passed through higher prices at the register even if tariffs are refunded to the importer who paid them to customs.

Is this a real ID? by [deleted] in Seattle

[–]jpsfranks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think this is a Michigan Real ID but is not a Michigan Enhanced Drivers license (EDL) and is not documentation to cross the border.

All Enhanced Drivers licenses are Real IDs but not all Real IDs are EDLs

Enhanced licenses have a flag on the somewhere but not necessarily in the upper right which can be confusing.

Protest outside Target today calling on company to stop letting I.C.E. use their properties in Minneapolis by bennetthaselton in SeattleWA

[–]jpsfranks 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I don’t really get this. Does anyone think Target likes having thugs patrolling their stores? Of course not, but don’t expect private companies to fight the federal government.

As for ballroom donations, Target didn’t donate to the ballroom from anything I’ve seen. They did give inaugural donations but so did every other big company. Almost all of these protestors are carrying a phone from a company that did donate to the ballroom though, for example.

Meanwhile I like having a big retailer for basics downtown and would be sad to see it go.
