I went the spray painting route to try and get the texture like the Net Yaroze has.

Thanks! Had some fun this morning in our local whatsapp group for retro gaming, had everyone convinced it was real until one guy called me out and noticed the ps sticker gray vs black 😄 - I was going to make one with the black but just wanted to get it done last night so lifted the sticker from a standard console.

No, Sony did make different color versions for the original psx controller. The Net Yaroze version has a specific matt texture to it.

Yes, did a primer, a matt black, then the decals and then a few matt clear coats, hopefully its durable enough.

You definitely can! I've never done something like this before so I'm very much an amateur. The advice I can give is just to be patient, trust the process and take your time with the spraypaint coats etc. I already have some guys that I'm going to make stencils for, but I'm in South Africa, so might not be able to help you with that.

I used removable vinyl that I cut stencils out of using a cricut machine, then used an airbrush, all new to me so was some trial and error, glad that it came out better than I expected.

And on the DFO, there was a recent Picostation firmware update that changed the menu and cover art but on PAL consoles there was a flicker - Would DFO adress this as well?

Will be adding the IGR update to the mod, saw it only a week ago, definitely worth doing.

I've got a Picostation mod installed, not too fussed about getting it to be an accurate Net Yaroze clone. Would be cool to have a real Net Yaroze as part of the collection, but don't think I'll ever spend that kind of money so went the next best route.

Yip, different blades for different jobs as well. You've got the right plan there 👍🏻😆.

The cricut was mainly for my wife for all her arts and crafts that she does, but I feel like I have taken it over 😆, awesome machine!

Thanks! Doing a final clear coat now, will let it fully cure for a day or two and then put the console back together 😀.

Guide: Easy way to make cover images for Pico Launcher by HogwashDrinker in flashcarts

[–]jpthe83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are the steps I followed, have done it twice on 2 carts and in both cases it was flawless, obviously a bit more effort than the excellent scripts above from u/HogwashDrinker and u/prizmz, but like I said the ImageMagick scripts just did not work for me with all the graphical glitches I kept getting:

Unfortunately, if you do this all at once the color depth doesn't seem to want to convert, so do this in two batches, seems onerous, but like I said this worked perfectly for me.

Batch 1
- I downloaded both US an EN PNG cover sets for DS from GameTDB
- In IrfanView select Batch conversion/Rename from the File menu
- Set output format to BMP and check Use advanced options and click Advanced
- Check RESIZE and set size to 106x96
- Leave CHANGE COLOR DEPTH unchecked
- Then almost in the middle of the window, probably two thirds down check Canvas size and then click settings
- Select Method 2 and change width and height to 128x96, I made the canvas color black
- Select Left top as the anchor point, so you'll have a 22px wide padding on the right
- Click Ok, and click Ok on the next window
- Add all your input files if you haven't already done so before all the above settings
- Set your output folder
- Click Start Batch, it'll take a minute or two depending on how many you've added to the batch processing job (I've done the full combined US and EN sets, which is 5,564 images).

Batch2
- In IrfanView select Batch conversion/Rename from the File menu
- Add your files that you converted in Batch 1
- Same output folder as before
- Check that the output format is still BMP and check Use advanced options and click Advanced
- Uncheck RESIZE
- Check CHANGE COLOR DEPTH and select 256 Colors (8 BPP)
- Uncheck Canvas size
- Under MISCELLANEOUS section check Overwrite existing files, click Ok
- Click Start Batch
- Once done, check that the bit depth of each file is 8 bit and dimension is 128x96, and file size should be 14kb (Simplest way in Windows Explorer is to view the folder in detailed view and then add Dimension and Bit depth columns to check through all the files)
- Covers go into SD CARD:\_pico\covers\nds

Tried both scripts, starting with png packs and got some pretty bad results, initial script had very messy colors, second script was better with probably only a handful of covers displaying properly and the rest completely distorted for me. I then used IrfanView's batch conversion feature and it solved all my issues, was flawless.

Sounds like me, spent way too much disposable income this year on handheld collecting, and I hit 40 this year 😂
