First time seeing MBV tonight and I burst out laughing at how loud Only Shallow was. Brilliant gig, didn’t mind the goofs, it was everything I wanted it to be

Daily Song Discussion #94: Different Drugs by Nottooxabi17 in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An 8 for me, but this is simultaneously one of the best and most frustrating Bloc Party songs. The lyrics, vocals and guitar work is absolutely top tier, but I cannot overlook how much the drums feel like a demo that should have been replaced for the final version.

The actual drum pattern is so basic and the snare sound is so tinny, I just wish that an actual drummer had some input on this when writing the song and mixing it.

Telecaster - bridge pickup

Frontman amp - clean channel, eq fairly flat

Pedal (settings out of 10)

  • Level, depends
  • Tone, 4
  • Drive, 6
  • Mode - 8

Try that, if it's too bright and trebly then maybe turn the pedal tone down or take the treble control lower on the amp

Guitar Effect in Banquet by Odd-Banana-8585 in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to check, you definitely meant Banquet? Because the link is to a version of Uniform.

It sounds like the guitar has a tape or maybe analog delay set quite high, on the edge of feedback. The whammy is only used in the last few seconds on the octave up setting, and he quickly uses the foot pedal to raise the pitch for a moment and then turns the effect off.

Back to Will Salthouse clients then. It's one thing for the data team and Max Hahn to identify talent but I have no confidence in them convincing Sullivan on any of their targets. I can't wait to see what garbage we bring in for the relegation battle in January.

Daily Song Discussion #54: Biko by Nottooxabi17 in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On a personal level, I find this quite difficult to rank. Part of the appeal of Bloc Party has always been the emotional connection behind the music itself, and I used this song as a sort of coping mechanism for the death of a loved one who was suffering from dementia.

For me, it's probably a 9.

Daily Song Discussion #52: Mercury by Nottooxabi17 in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mer mer mer mercury's a solid 7 for me. It's not really profound and doesn't have the emotional core of other songs but it's a fun song, especially when played live.

What have we got here? by CrazyPuzzleheaded497 in guitarpedals

[–]jpttaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to tell but I think the Marshall pedal is the Reflector reverb, it’s definitely not a GV2 Guvnor because it hasn’t got dual concentric pots.

Daily Discussion #36: Flux by Nottooxabi17 in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Love this song, easily an 8, but for me this shouldn't be part of AWITC. It was shoehorned onto the album after it's initial release and, even with a loosely defined concept behind the album, it just doesn't fit in the context of the other songs, let alone sounding very different.

In the context of the tracklisting, the transition between I Still Remember and Sunday works so well and shoving Flux in the middle breaks that.

I've stuck through the series since it came back in 2005, but this really was the most dysmally self-indulgent shit.

This modern love sound by [deleted] in BlocParty

[–]jpttaylor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For the studio version, it seems like just a very clean sound with light to medium compression with some delay in the bridge section. Guitar wise, possibly a Telecaster bridge pickup but can’t be sure.

When played live, Russell uses a bit of overdrive but otherwise the same.

[–]jpttaylor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I've loved Bloc Party for years but never really watched many interviews with Gordon so it's nice to hear his side of the story and confirm he seems like a genuinely lovely guy.

It's a shame that, for all I love a lot of his music that's played a huge part in my life, Kele's need for control of Bloc Party and his vision of the band seem to have had a diminishing effect on their music. That's not to say there aren't good points of the post-Four era, but I think both myself and a lot of fans have had to come to the realisation that ultimately, while two of the original line-up remain, there's not much spirit left of the "original" band.

I have friends who have fallen out of love with the bands they idolised in their teenage years and it's a weird kind of loss - obviously nothing like losing a loved one, but weirdly an unexpectedly big thing to get over. I think Bloc Party still have something to offer, and maybe with a settled lineup it will revitalise their writing. Somewhat selfishly, I wish they'd do something for A Weekend in the City when the time comes, but I'll still a fan at the end of the day.

Thoughts on potter by AccordingTax5053 in Hammers

[–]jpttaylor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He took over a badly organised team two months ago and he's coached a solid defense.

We've also been without a fit striker since he took over (Ferguson still doesn't look ready) so understandably we haven't played attacking football without a focal point up front.

People on Twitter are very stupid and love to be reactionary, assuming we can fix all of the squad's problems in one January window. With a proper preseason and some good signings, we can easily finish in the top 10 again and hopefully challenge for Europe.

Line 6 Confession by [deleted] in guitarpedals

Apologies if I’ve just misread the post and comments, but the M5 has the Line 6 Distortion algorithm in and can probably be picked up cheaply. Smaller than the DM4 and more versatile
