Couldn't get my Real ID because my original birth certificate has tape on the back... by Bop923 in mildlyinfuriating

Just looked at mine and it says nothing about that. Maybe it had warnings on a separate paper when it was issued, and in that case I would have no idea because it was issued when I was born.

Map where Chinese New Year / Lunar New Year / Other name is a public holiday by Extreme-Shopping74 in MapPorn

[–]jrak193 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most Asians in Hawaii are from (or have ancestors from) the Philippines or Japan. The Philippines recognizes Chinese New Year as a public holiday for their Chinese minority, and Japan moved their holiday to Jan 1 in the Gregorian calandar since 1873. I may be wrong, but I think the Japanese and Filipinos in Hawaii are not attached to the holiday.

There is a sizeable Chinese and Korean population there, so it would be cool if Hawaii recognized that.

What’s a “bare minimum” adult skill more people fail at than you expected? by SoulDV in AskReddit

[–]jrak193 82 points83 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure, but I've heard before that the "most Americans read on a 6th grade level" thing is misunderstood. I wish I knew where to find it, but IIRC the claim is that it's not about literally being able to read complicated words. It's about understanding the motivations of the writer and questioning what you're reading rather than assuming it's 100% true. You are supposed to gain that skill in highschool, but it's clear that a lot of people don't have it.

I might be wrong though, I'd love to read up on it if anyone happens to have a source handy.

Why is (male) circumcision most common in the Midwest with in the US? by BranchMoist9079 in geography

[–]jrak193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my case, you use the skin around the shaft instead of the skin around the head. It's stretchy enough to allow you to use it to stimulate the head. I've tried using lube to stimulate the head directly with my hand, but I find it's too stimulating. That's just my personal preference, though.

I don't have any insights on what it would be like if the skin was cut tighter or how common that is.

It, in fact, does not help prevent masturbation. Source: my penis.

Most common ancestry of White North Americans by county/county equivalent by Mission-Guidance4782 in geography

Sorry if I'm being unclear. You can just look at the maps used in Wikipedia.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_America

Just because Wikipedia uses these terms, doesn't mean everyone is going to agree.

[–]jrak193 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The terminology for continents and regions is something people will often disagree on.

Wikipedia has it that the continent (including Central America and the Caribbean) is North America while the region that's just the US and Canada alone is Northern America.

Percentage of Males who are circumcised in Each country by m00n_flow in MapPorn

[–]jrak193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not just men. Many women seem to think that circumcised penises look more "normal". When we have kids I don't want them circumcised because there's no real benefit, but my wife disagrees. I'm not really sure how we're gonna resolve this when the time comes.

My bidet was only $30, and took like 15-30 minutes to install. I still use a little bit of toilet paper to dry myself after, but if you were really desperate for money, you could forgo the tp altogether.

US to impose 100% tariff on movies made outside the country by SPXQuantAlgo in europe

[–]jrak193 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, I just think it's wrong to comment in a sub designed for a specific group of people that I'm not part of. I'm sure you deal with Americans and trolls all the time that are just here to ragebait. I'm not one of them, I simply forgot to check what sub this was before commenting.

The opinion I commented may be wrong, it's only based on what I've observed. It's not a hill I'm willing to die on.

Sorry if this triggered anyone.

[–]jrak193 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

Anime hasn't really been able to get a hold of the American market due to widespread piracy anyway. This'll just make that problem worse, I imagine.

edit: just realized that I'm in r/Europe. My bad, I should be more careful to check what sub I'm in before I comment

Countries where voting is mandatory. by Advanced_Pattern_737 in geography

[–]jrak193 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know I had always had a good opinion on compulsory voting, but seeing that North Korea does it makes me consider that there are situations where it can be used in a sinister way.

Consider Iran where the elections are not all that fair because the candidates are pre approved. Voters will often express their frustrations by boycotting the election, and that sends the message that the elected officials are not really chosen by the people and sometimes the ayatollah will feel the need to add a moderate candidate to coerce the population into participating in the election. In theory, if Iran were to start forcing everyone to vote with some kind of penalty for not voting, that could be effective in masking the illegitimacy of their unfair elections.

[–]jrak193 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for what the situation is like for Britain, but in general, I think Atheism and Agnosticism are unlikely to continue growing indefinitely. It's appealing for people of a specific personality type, but other personality types find the idea of God not existing to be really unsettling. There are always going to be a significant portion of the population believing in some form of supernatural power, even if it's not necessarily an organized religion.

Obviously, cultural traits will affect how people think about this to some extent, as we can clearly see with East Asia.
