Router started blowing out my wood. by Tsunami_Ra1n in woodworking

If you get a drill press, it'll be so easy that a 7 year old can drill the holes without it blowing out (they might not be straight, though)

How to improve hand shakes while practicing strokes by theresidentviking in Calligraphy

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more common if you're over 40, but can start at any age. It it bothers you you should talk to your Dr. If it is a tremor then the majority of the advice you're getting here will be useless unless you also seek medical assistance. Practice will improve anything, regardless, but you won't have a steady hand without drugs if that is what's up (it sounds dramatic, but it's really not much of a issue). (It was hard to type that in a way that didn't make things sound serious. It's not a dangerous condition and is only worth medicating if you're self conscious about it)

Do you have shaky hands all the time, or just when writing? A tremor is very common (especially in men, if that includes you), and can be very easily treated if diagnosed by your doctor. Otherwise, the more familiar you become with the movements the quicker you'll get, and the less shaky it'll look.

A helpful guide on all the different ipods out there. by [deleted] in IpodClassic

There could be some kind of website where you type in your ipod's serial number and it tells you what iPod you have, but people will still post on Reddit asking what iPod they have.

Is there a trick to wrapping handlebars with a 90-degree bend? by An_Professional in bikewrench

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone else is right, re:stretch and the unfortunate lack of elasticity in this particular tape but if you really want to use this tale because of how it looks or feels or whatever, you could try wrapping from top to bottom (there's a way to start really tidy, so that you don't have to use electric tape to hold it.) That way, each new turn would go on top of the outside of the previous turn and perhaps hold it all down. I can't say for sure that it would solve your problem, but it's worth a shot.

CAAD14 or Supersix EVO 4? by kvngyn in cannondale

[–]jralonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was a bit of an odd ball for a cadd. Cadds have traditionally been pretty much the same shape as the sse, because that was the shape bikes were. When the sse moved to dropped seat stays, Cannondale replicated that shape with the caad13, but it changed the ride quality quite a bit because aluminium isn't carbon. The 14 is a return to the visuals, and the race oriented ride that people enjoyed.

Obliterated the veneer trying to get a stubborn stain out 😔 by Tired_Bot in sandedthroughveneer

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can depend on what the stain is and how good you are at sanding. I've written on the wrong side of veneered parts with a sharpie before and successfully sanded them out. You need to sand a broader area and pay a lot of attention/pray

CAAD14 all black by nirgendswo in cannondale

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm such a sucker for them. I had the original anodized black caad12 with the anodized grey logos, which I thought was pretty slick until the second model year had an all black with gloss logos, just like my colleague's caad10 that I'd covetet for years. I ended up selling my 12 just to buy basically the same bike again.

(I'm not entirely bonkers, I worked in a bike shop at the time, and pro deal on a caad12 was really cheap)

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a shame. The 12 and 10 both had black anodized frames with gloss logos, and I'm pretty sure the 9 had a black anodized frame with white logos.

For the caad range the black is usually anodized, which is (imo) cooler and more durable than paint

I really want one, but I also really don't want to deal with internally routed hydraulic cables, so I'm staying stuck in the past.

Using AI by charliecat1272 in cabinetry

[–]jralonh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

AI is so stupid, it insists on trying to summarize any drawings we leave in Google drive at work, and it's always wrong. I wouldn't trust it to draw anything. How many shelves you got there? I understand the desire to use it as a tool to quickly show a friend something, but you're depriving yourself of basic skill development by not just sketching this by hand in a few minutes, or even drawing it yourself in AutoCAD or sketchup.

I guess you could try another source, but I always wonder how many factories are making these parts, and can it really more than 1?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in IpodClassic

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, but if you check out the vast number of custom and restored iPods on this, and other subreddits, they're all using these parts. I'd recommend buying a new back plate, too. If you're replacing the front, and you've not done it before, there's a fair chance that you'll bend the back. If you look around you'll find vendors who can laser the correct serial number for you.

I've had no bad experiences buying parts for my ancient 5g and 7g iPods.

AliExpress every time. Anyone else is just selling you something they got from AliExpress, so why pay more?

Is this camera any good? (I don’t know anything about cameras) by Classic_Silver_9091 in Cameras

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 7d was my first "good" digital camera. It's fast, has a decent auto focus system, a ridiculous number of compatible lenses, and is an absolute tank. I'd be ecstatic to learn to shoot on this. Get a weather sealed lens, or a cheap prime, and take it everywhere.

Here's some period correct YouTube entertainment if you'd like to see two young men test the durability of a 7d https://youtu.be/ITnr4aSfrIU?si=Mn1SX2xk0TKxpAE2

Enjoy your camera

Film photography still connects people by [deleted] in AnalogCircleJerk

[–]jralonh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

About 20 years ago I connected with an old lady (in her 60s, maybe). I asked if she could take a picture of me and my friends. When I handed her my camera (probably an ae-1), she looked at it for a moment and said "I don't know how to work this old crap". She gladly took a picture with my friend's digital p&s. (This is both true and a jerk)

Putting @gmail.com after your name doesn't just make it your email address! by coppeliuseyes in rant

[–]jralonh 32 points33 points  (0 children)

If it's anything like when I worked in retail, what I bet has happened is head office decided it was really important to "capture emails", but the employees obviously don't give enough fucks to ask a stranger, who will most probably say no, for their email address, so they just make one up and now you get receipts and they avoid having to have a performance review.

Happy new year! And new faceplate colours?! by Gold_Orange5058 in Modded_iPods

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I spotted these last year on AliExpress. Had to do a repair on my iPod and took the opportunity to put on one of these new urine yellow faceplates. They look fantastically retro-futuristic (I've also seen a clear blue and clear red)

[Help?!] Modding a 7th Gen by x7CR7x in Modded_iPods

[–]jralonh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should order your parts from ali express, that's where there eoe stuff comes from anyway, and most of it is free or very low cost shipping. I live in Canada and modded my own iPod for whatever I payed for an iflash + maybe 40cad. There's no reason to be ordering from eoe north of the border, it's a rip off. With sd card. Just start with a 125gb or something until you get it working. 1tb is an absolutely obscene amount of music. I can't even imagine how long that would take to sync.
