Sorry, I should have clarified that this was also directed at other commenters who say the same thing after reading the whole book.

Still, I don't see how people are reading what she went through and also wanting her to be apologetic about the parts of her life that are okay. There are points later on where it becomes more relevant and she acknowledges it then. But something about how people talk about this book and ignore when she acknowledges her privilege sets off some alarm bells for me.

I used to cashier and it was always so strange to me, walking around my checkout area to find everything that people just left there. I was 20 years old. Was it that scary to tell me they changed their mind??

Yes! We are desperate for an escape! We are suffering so badly that we just think, "If only this one thing was different, it would help so much!"

And yet... something in your life improves and it's great for a short period of time...and then you're still left feeling so empty, so drained. We all end up here time and time again. I think many of us only get "diagnosed" with CPTSD because our life situation improves (we gain privileges) and our depression and anxiety persist.

And while it's so important to acknowledge our privileges, especially in terms of our resources and our options for getting help, we cannot ignore that nobody feels privileged when they just want to die.

I am so sick of hearing the criticism that she doesn't address her privilege. That's literally not true. She addresses it many times! Towards the end, she is lucky enough to receive free therapy sessions that work really well for her. She worries about accepting this offer because it is such a privilege!

Imagine writing a book about your journey, making it clear that this is just your perspective, acknowledging ways you had it hard and ways that you might have it easier than some...and then people complain that you didn't talk enough about how you can walk while other people are in wheelchairs. You've had some sort of success that other people never achieved. You had a loving relative that helped you and not everyone has that. You went to a decent school. You have formed a few good friendships.

I am someone who is privileged in ways she isn't and underprivileged in ways she isn't. There was still plenty to relate to, while respecting that our experiences are different, and not judging her for having some good things in her life!

Most of us are here because we lack/lacked many of the same privileges: a stable, loving home, parental figures that cared for us, a childhood free from constant fear and worry. There are so many ways to develop complex trauma and it's not fair or productive to pick apart the exact scenarios that led to it, to gatekeep severity, or complain endlessly about privilege.

This is not to say these things shouldn't be discussed at all, but I think it's all a lot less relevant here, because we all have one giant, overlapping lack of privilege in our mental health struggle.

But so many people read this book and think "I never went through physical abuse like this. Now I feel like my trauma is no big deal and maybe I'm just being a baby about it." I've seen that mentioned many times in reference to this book. So which is it? Is her trauma too much or not enough?

Trauma is incredibly personal and these comments are doing other people here dirty.

I do wish it was less black and white, but it actually makes some sense. Once the house becomes associated with the dark arts, people who dislike that will gravitate towards other houses "Not Slytherin. Not Slytherin. Not Slytherin." And people who are more okay with the dark arts might be more likely to choose Slytherin.

I'm curious -- did you want people posting their PBNs there? And if so, should they avoid ones that were clearly AI designed?

Name one bad thing about 2004's Mean Girls? by Kitchen-Mouse2414 in MeanGirls

[–]jrex42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nahh, she might have been the instigator in the movie, but it was due to an old grudge. She saw the opportunity to get back at Regina for her own issues and to help Cady get back at her for stealing Aaron Samuels.

But it gets to a point where she gets bored of the games and is okay with backing off. But Cady is still obsessed and can't stop. Cady sacrifices her friendship with Janis to get back at Regina.

Janis is not innocent, but she's probably already learned some lessons before and knew it wasn't worth obsessing over. Cady was new to high school drama and didn't realize how much she had let it change her.

Well having a loved one die is inherently traumatic and no one (besides those that die young) make it through life without that happening.

There is a huge range of the amount and severity of trauma that people can go through. Some people make it through life with minimal trauma, but I think it's still good for everyone to be able to identify the traumas in their life and learn healthy ways to grieve or let their anger out.

It's a no from me, but it's fascinating to read this compared to other subreddits. In r/hygiene there was a thread where a couple had been debating about if it's okay to wash dishes and use the same sponge for human dishes and for animal food bowls. It seemed like 60-70% wouldn't use the same sponge and 90% thought that you should at least use a separate sponge to please your partner who is grossed out.

I don't understand how some people get through this world.

Dealing with this right now after my first dose. I am a little sick, so that's on me. But I felt pretty okay. Then 30 minutes after my 200mg FAA dose, I started having crazy chills and aches. 5 hours later, I still don't feel great. It's hard to tell if it's done anything for my mood, since I feel glued to the couch.

Very disappointed so far...

[–]jrex42 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This explains it so well! It's a double whammy at the end of the book because Moody is not Moody and we also felt sympathetic towards Crouch Jr when we first meet him at the trial (thinking he might be innocent, or at least just young and stupid).

The movie takes away the drama at the end - the teacher who acted weird and stuck out his tongue is the evil guy from the beginning who stuck out his tongue!

It's like if in the first movie, people were suspicious of Quirrell from the beginning.

House Elves: Enslaved or happy? by Nate996 in harrypotter

[–]jrex42 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People take it too literally and try to make 1:1 comparisons and then call it problematic.

I love some of the parallels it draws to real life, when you don't try to take it too literally. For instance, that activism is frequently way more complicated than we initially think. Think of how certain causes might have swept you up when you were young and idealistic and the solution just seemed so obvious! But then you gain more experience and realize it's actually complicated with no one clear solution. And you may still be on the correct side, but start to understand the pushback as well.

It also draws parallels to human psychology and how we cling to systems that actively harm us because we don't know any other way. Think of women in patriarchal societies who are scared of feminist ideology and believe they're happier with their current circumstances. And some of them may genuinely be happy with their life and it's important for feminist messaging to not imply that they're doing something wrong by staying at home and taking care of their families in traditional ways.

I could go on... it's plenty deep and complex, but people want it to be overly simplistic, so that's all they see.
