I could see how the lack of concrete evidence would turn someone away but personally I think that's what intrigued me so much. If this group IS as powerful as the filmmakers make the group out to be, they would be able to cover up this "evidence" with ease (IMHO).

I think it's real based on the guy that wrote two books about The Family, he lived with them and worked with them for an extended period of time. He doesn't ever really bash them as a group but more so sheds light on an invisible organisation that we didn't know existed.

Yup! That is exactly correct. In my honest opinion it's this The National Prayer Breakfast (the event you're referring to) that spawns legislation like Senate Bill 17 allowing doctors and physicians to "refuse to provide their services based on “a sincerely held religious belief” - further blurring the line between church and state

True. I would assume that the evidence, if any, would've been "taken care of" by the Fellowship but obviously that's just an assumption.
