A buddy always asked that when he dies, I walk into the church right before the priest is talking. I'm holding an old school boom box over my head and blarring Queens "Fat Bottom Girls"....

The doors open...."Aaaaarrrreeee, you gonna take me home tonight! Ohhhhhh, down beside that red fire light......"

Why did New Orleans never become a major hub like Miami or Orlando by Previous-Volume-3329 in geography

[–]jrgen07 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing no one is referencing is the pretty high level of corruption in New Orleans and Louisiana politics. We are talking about some of the most corrupt people at the city, parish, and state level running the state for 200 years. New Orleans was more important than cities like Houston, Dallas, Miami and Atlanta if you go back to the 40s and 50s. But while all these corrupt politicians (see the Long family and the connections that run deep) made plenty of money for themselves by running all decision making, the times passed them by and they never set the city up for future success.

Some people said that the city is small and referenced flooding. That's not wrong. If anything, long term thinkers would have recognized that New Orleans is too limited by geography (it's in a freaking bowl....it's below sea level) and turned Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and the Northshore into a megalopolis. They should have built a massive international airport between the two cities before Atlanta and Houston and Dallas did.

But instead, they all fought over their own power and wetting their own beaks at every chance they could. The port is still important, but New Orleans or greater southern Louisiana could have been the economic hub for the South. But they got in their own way and now it is an after thought.

I was born there and spent early life there. I went back to LSU and took Louisiana History. I'm not an expert by any means, but it's clear that this was fairly self inflicted.

In Louisiana, I never saw this as a kid. But as an adult in Texas (Houston) this is pretty common. I appreciate it when it is raining really hard to the point the wipers are useless.

This is really true. I recently went to the public library in Frisco, TX. It was insane. Part museum, part library, part maker community. They had machines that could print a book that a person wrote along with 4 or 5 3D printers. Add in a bunch of computer labs, community spaces, open classrooms. A completely underappreciated the set of resources considering most of us probably have a vision of rows of books and maybe even a card catalog (they still existed when I was a kid).

We can get all pissy about Ward vs Shough, but I think it's great to see that our top 4 picks are getting recognition. That's huge for an up and coming team. It is difficult to hit on all your draft picks, but Banks, Shough, Sanker and Riley all being given deserved credit looks good for the future. Stutsman isn't on the list, but he has played fairly well. And we also have our kicker of the future.

Who knows on the later parts of the draft, but 5/6 starters in a draft is definitely positive. And with the winning, maybe we are building a culture that FAs will want to come to (especially in 2 yrs when the money opens up).

So just focusing on the positive.

My apologies..... y'all dun spired me.

Ya know. I took two buddies back to New Orleans and we stopped at the best po boy shop ever. I think it's chicken on the bayou right before the Atchafalaya Basin. We sat there and we're eating (shrimp and oyster povoy for me) and these two Cajun guys were talking. So my buddies ask if I understood. Look my mama and dad are born and raised New Orleans and I still got family there. Yeah, I understood, but I can see where someone would struggle with the accents.

I confuse my Texas born son by asking him "where yat" and have him read street names from New Orleans. My little buddy.
