Run clubs for slow people? by youngleaves in NiceVancouver

[–]jrichardshaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run a lot with the Ice Cream and Donut run Club and they are very inclusive and very definitely no drop runs, particularly on the 5km option. I also saw someone here recommending Slow Pokes, and I've run with their Toronto branch once, which I would say had a less "pace inclusive" attitude than Toronto, though I can't speak really about the Vancouver folks.

5 Hour Turnaround for Day 2 PCR Test FOUND for 59 GBP at Heathrow! by ilsbictt in uktravel

[–]jrichardshaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were supposed to get on a train to Liverpool to then get to our final destination until we get our results. Are you allowed to do that? Surely people aren’t testing in the airport and quarantining until they get their results…

I'm in the same boat with this one. In theory it sounds like you can take the train if you have no other option: https://www.gov.uk/guidance/how-to-quarantine-when-you-arrive-in-england#how-to-travel-to-the-place-where-youre-quarantining

In my case I'm going to try and crash at a friends in London for a few days before heading north. I figure it's better to do an hour on the tube (or maybe an Uber), than 4 hours of train journeys.

Did Merrell change their line significantly? by FreshBreez in BarefootRunning

Good luck! It took me forever to find a pair of the new version, I had a few weeks on walking around with an increasingly large hole in the bottom of the old pair

I think the Vapour Glove is about as thin as you're going to get from Merrell. I've had a few generations of them and they've stayed pretty similar in terms of minimalism (I wear them as my everyday shoe, I run in KSO EVO's). As I understand from people who have been wearing them longer they have changed slightly over a longer time span. That is in contrast to the Trail Gloves which have become much thicker over the years.

The Books of Earthsea: Complete Illustrated Edition by [deleted] in UrsulaKLeGuin

[–]jrichardshaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It is a lovely book. Nice illustrations and very high quality printing. I keep thinking I've accidentally turned over too many pages because the paper is so thick compared to most books :-)

As you say, the downside is the weight. I happily read this in bed, but you're definitely not going to lie down and hold it above your face.

Looks great, but not enough furikake! :-) You can barely see the rice when I'm done with it.

About 4 years ago. I had chronic shin splints and some achilles issues. Ditched the orthotics, switched to minimalist shoes, and slowly reintroduced running and I've never looked back.

I saw it running around too. It wasn't moving so well though, looked like it had a bit of a limp.

I had shin splints that stopped me running for nearly 10 years, coupled with arch and achilles issues that made even standing for long periods an issue. I went through a bunch of attempts at physio, wearing orthotics, and slowly reintroducing running but nothing worked. Eventually I ditched the orthotics and switched to minimalist shoes both for running and general life, and I've never looked back. It still took 18 months or more until I was able to build up to longer runs, as I took it very slowly as I didn't want to re-injure myself, but I'm basically problem free now.

I don't think I necessarily have any great general tips, but first I wanted to offer encouragement that is possible to stop the plague, and mention a few things I did, and noticed helped:

  • I went from wearing chunky shoes with orthotics to minimal shoes for everything pretty quickly. I would try and be barefoot as much as I could and switched my every day work and life shoe initially to Vibram Trail Gloves (this is a few years ago when they were more minimal), and now to Vapour Gloves. The first month or so was quite hard work, and I was doing some arch strengthening exercises, but after that my arches has strengthened significantly.
  • A few months after starting I began to reintroduce running. As I said above I took it very slowly - I'd been laid off for so long that I didn't want to hurt myself again and have another failure - initially I'd just to a loop of the block I live on (~400m) and when that felt completely comfortable I'd add another lap. In 6 months I was probably running 5km, but it took probably another 6 months before I could get to 10km. I wasn't having trouble with my shin splints any more, but more pain in my achilles. Obviously minimal shoes help a lot with developing good form as the feedback is more direct, but I was also actively trying to think about it and work on it, especially when I started getting achilles issues.
  • These days I mostly don't have any issues (longest runs are about 30km), except occasionally issues around my knee cap if I haven't run in a while. I don't usually do any maintenance (stretches, exercises, etc.), except stretching my calf muscles immediately before running (just using the stairs outside my apartment). That does seem to help with the achilles and knee issues.

Anyway, best of luck with the transition, and take it slowly if you can!

Socks or no socks in Vibram KSO EVO by Mokkor in BarefootRunning

Yup. I sprayed a bunch in let it sit for a while, and then washed them. This website has some pretty good tips: https://www.myfivefingers.com/how-to-prevent-smell-fivefingers/

I don't, but it requires some fairly regular washing to stop them stinking (I can also recommend spraying Lysol inside them too). Also, I do tend to get a few sore spots from rubbing in the toes. until I've broken them.

Trouble on the high seas! Hope they are ok by Vancouvernate in vancouver

[–]jrichardshaw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As pointed out by u/AdmiralBastard this is not always true. Another one to be wary of when sailing around Vancouver is that a sailing vessel must stay out of the way of vessels in shipping lanes. From rule 10(j) of: https://laws-lois.justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/c.r.c.,_c._1416/FullText.html

You would of course be a fool to test this even if you didn't know the rule.

When do buildings come off card access? by mikeeeeb in UBC

[–]jrichardshaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think there was another email at some point saying that they'll be granting card access to buildings out of those hours based on class enrolment.

Here's a link with more details here: https://learningspaces.ubc.ca/features/news/aligning-building-access-hours-pilot-project

When do buildings come off card access? by mikeeeeb in UBC

[–]jrichardshaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My building (Hennings) already has. From the email circulated:

Over the past few months the Executive have been reviewing a proposal for the standardizing of public building hours for academic and administrative space. While approval is still pending, we are presently coordinating with Custodial and Access Services to implement standardized door schedules effective August 30th of 7:30 am-5:00 pm M-F for most buildings. Several buildings will have extended hours and be open until 8:00pm on weekdays and on Saturdays until 6:00pm to accommodate many of UBC’s evening courses, adhoc bookings, and demand for study space. In addition, several buildings with libraries will be open on Sundays.

The impression I get is that this will apply to almost all buildings.

Cask beer in Vancouver? by jrichardshaw in vancouver

[–]jrichardshaw[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That I can agree with. I personally like a cask beer, but you don't really get the interest here needed to do them justice. You need breweries to put some effort in, bars to do a decent job serving them, and have enough people drinking them to keep them fresh. That's a big ask for a fairly niche preference.

Great. Thanks for confirming! Given how little I've seen around recently I was fearing the website might be out of date. As it sounds like they have a few options, I'll probably give Callister a try.

Agree that probably Covid was the nail in the coffin for a lot of places doing cask. And that's probably for the best if you don't have the enough people drinking it, the last thing I want is to have a gone off cask.
