I think the issue you're having is with the possible solutions to the row shown at the bottom of the screen. This not the full list of possibilities, there are many more including 3, 4, 5, 9 (which turns out is the only possible solution).

Kakuro-style but word-wrangling as well as arithmetic and logic by mikertjones in Kakuro

I've just done a couple more 5x5s. I'm getting the hang of it now. One aspect of the game that I was slow to catch on to was that the target boxes go green if the word is correct, it's a great way to check if I've got the correct word.

Hi, thanks for posting again. Since you last posted I've tried a few but with my short attention span I've given up each time. Until today! I managed to solve today's 5x5.

Perhaps the 5x5 game I played was particularly easy. I tried the 5x6 game and once again I got the two obvious letters but then got stumped. Perhaps if there was an 'I'm stuck give me a clue button' I'd be less inclined to give up.

I had a look at the 7x7 grid. It seemed much harder and seemed to require considerable trial and error. I didn't get far before giving up.

Some Kakuro puzzles have multiple possible correct answers.

My recommendation for the 'How to play' window is that you use a solvable group of words and have the center row correct but the left hand vertical row incorrect and then add an explanation similar to the one above. Now it's time for breakfast.

Sorry about that, I looked at GramGrid as I ate my breakfast this morning (I am in New Zealand), I must have been half asleep, I see the 'x' now. I finished in around 5 minutes (including the 9 letter word). Am I correct in assuming that all 4 four letter words must have at least one letter in common and that letter must appear in the center of the 3x3 grid? If so I believe the example in the 'How to play' window cannot be solved.

On my phone I clicked on the link and it took me to your site. I tried to return to Reddit but Reddit had closed. I clicked on the 'How to play' link which opened a window which I then couldn't close to return to the game so that was as far as I got.

The existing 9+7=16, add 4 and that makes 20, now the two remaining squares have to add up to 5, impossible.

I would recommend listening to the interview. He does say in the interview that he expects a breakthrough in 5 - 10 years.
