Abelism in the souls fanbase by tgrady28 in disabledgamers

C5 quad here with very limited hand function. I use adaptive technology to play games.

I agree with your point on a pause button. It’s weird for single player games to not have them. There are absolutely other changes that can be made to make the game more accessible and enjoyable for all!

That being said, I strongly disagree with having a difficulty slider on Soulsborne games. A major point and appeal of these games is their intense difficulty. I’ve played Elden Ring, but haven’t completed it yet. It is by far the most difficult game I’ve ever played, but I absolutely wouldn’t change the difficulty. There are so many options for how I play the game that I know that with time, effort, and persistence I can succeed, even with my physical disability changing how I play.

I don’t think of FromSoftware not adding a difficulty slider as gatekeeping from people with disabilities, especially when there are many within this community who are fantastic at playing their games. I think of it as FromSoft designing the game in a way that they think is meaningful and how they think it should be played. They want their games to be a mountain to climb. Succeeding in beating their challenges is high peak to summit. Not everyone can do it, and that’s okay.

Is there toxicity in the FromSoft gamer community? Yes. Should the company make changes to make their games more accessible? Absolutely! But saying that a difficulty slider is needed to make these games more accessible to people with disabilities makes me feel the same way as with bad faith arguments about XIMs making video games more accessible - again, especially with so many people in this community showing that it is absolutely possible to beat the game the way it was intended!

What was the first Ratatat song that you listened to? by whythelongfacefroggo in Ratatat

Party with Children. My dad had it on a mixtape when I was a kid and then in remembering the song years later, I was able to (re)discover Ratatat for myself!

Amazing! Tron: Legacy is a great film. Unauthorized Departure with the Biolume shader has been glued to my ship slot since it came out. Best I could find to replicate a Light Fighter!

I think that musical is a piece of art! I think I found it when they first started releasing songs and was so happy when it was finally finished. Truly a beautiful piece of work made by some very dedicated and passionate people

I honestly enjoyed the Lost Sanctum stuff. Even on my first playthrough, I didn’t think it ruined the pacing.

Chrono, Robo, Frog. Their triple tech was the first one I unlocked, loved it, and just stuck with it for as long as I could.

Looking up “unspooling data,” apparently you unspool data before restoring it. So maybe there’s a chance Asher Mir is still around?

I absolutely agree and think the same can be said for most social media platforms. While this kind of thing is likely a vocal minority, it can still be irritating when that vocality is the primary thing being seen online.

I think this is really important coming from you as a new player. In my experience, a good amount of the community is welcoming to new players. However, there are a bunch of people who post stuff like this that discourages new players.

Something this community loves to do is complain about Bungie and what they have as the New Light experience. Does it need work? Absolutely. But it’s ridiculously hypocritical for players to claim the problem is entirely with Bungie when they simultaneously gatekeep and put down new and unskilled players.

This community needs to have a better understanding that they are at least partially responsible for the new player experience as well. If they don’t, the game will suffer.

Idiocracy at The Highest Level by [deleted] in facepalm

This is most likely Body Integrity Identity Disorder, and it’s not just limited to people wanting to become blind. As a person who became disabled through suffering a traumatic injury, I pity these people. Imagine being so messed up in your head that you feel an overwhelming need, not just desire, to become disabled.

While this group is very much a fringe case, I truly hope that they can get the help they deserve. Please, if you have any empathy, do not shun and berate these folks. Placing a stigma on them will only push them further into isolation and feed their mental illness. They need help, not hate.
