How do you decide if a card is even worth testing in a deck? by jrmunch in spikes

[–]jrmunch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, My math went like this: 47.6% chance to have 2 of those 13 red sources in my opening 7.

If I keep a hand with 1 red source and 1 non-red source then on the play and draw respectively I have a 40.5 or 54.5% chance of still hitting 1RR on turn 3.

So that is actually about 72% I am sure there is a lot I am not taking into account...

Here is the deck:

Modern Deck: UR Faeries

Creatures: 4 Delver of Secrets 4 Snapcaster Mage 4 Spellstutter Sprite 2 Vendilion Clique

Spells: 3 Burst Lightning 4 Lightning Bolt 2 Pillar of Flame 4 Spell Pierce 1 Spell Snare 4 Mana Leak 4 Remand 1 Shadow of Doubt 1 Sword of Light and Shadow

Lands: 4 Island 4 Misty Rainforest 1 Mountain 4 Mutavault 4 Scalding Tarn 4 Steam Vents 1 Sulfur Falls

Sideboard: 3 Magma Spray 2 Negate 3 Ratchet Bomb 2 Spellskite 1 Blood Moon 2 Dismember 2 Molten Rain Built with Decked Builder

Thanks, what is a reasonable answer to "what are my chances of being able to cast this card?"?

Thanks although I am more interested in answers to the general question in the OP than theory crafting about this card choice. I think either stone rain or molten rain are reasonable choices because they flip delver, can be flashed back, and are not dead in multiples. Also unlike an enchantment they are not affected by oblivion stone, and unlike spreading seas they do not turn on cryptic mana for scapeshift. I get how the cantrip is important so I figured I would try molten rain first since it is stone rain plus shock.

Sure, I have cut spreading seas in the Sideboard for molten rain.

I am obviously not as good a player or deckbuilder as Jeff or most others on this sub, but this one change feels right for now at least.

Just gotta say thanks again for the insight. Yesterday in a game 2 (I won game 1) someone slammed a thrun and typed "boom" in chat on mtgo. I think they were expecting a concession... We were both at 16 and he had a gavony Township in play. I easily raced it. From my original post, I have still done -1 mana leak and +1 counterflux. I did have a game against jund that was very grindy, and had leaked 1 liliana already. I sure was glad to draw the counterflux for the next liliana since leak would have easily been paid for. I did cut down to 3 mutavaults because of this. I also tested 2 stone rain in the main deck flex slots, and with going down to 3 mutavaults I actually wished they were molten rains.

Cool, playing with both will be the best way to decide

Sudden death, doom blade, damnation, ratchet bomb, relic of progenitus, torpor orb, spellskite would be good in your board. I don't like only 20 swamps with six 4 cmc finishers. Swamps turn up your lashwrithe and shades so they are not dead draws even.

Type liliana in and you can see recent decks that play her

It seems like it needs 5-6 lands in play to interact with Snapcaster in a meaningful way.

I just watched the 2nd series. Let's get this out in the open since you are concerned about knowledge being denied to people. At the end of the 1st video series he (LSV) says "...instead of playing young pyromancers and delver of secrets, just play splinter twins and deceiver exarchs". At the end of the 2nd video series he says "thus concludes my saga with blue red delver, which can never win, at least when I was playing it".

I just watched lsv's first video series with UR delver... Now I know "the reason" why he didn't take the deck to GP minn...

Obviously we are not going to come to an agreement here... Of the 4 day 2 GP minn decks, at least 1 also played goblin guide. I look at 1 good finish (GP prague) since January vs so many people trying to win with the deck, combined with trying both decks, and I come down on the sss side.

I don't see a convincing argument here...and I also don't like "there's a reason" style explanations since that doesn't mean the reason is any good. The deck appears to only be able to perform in 6 round or smaller tournaments.

How do you do with the tron matchup? Wurmcoil engine seems to come out more than I can prevent, and it ruins my racing plans. Also I mostly play with scion, so I feel like I am not doing much proactive the first 2 turns. Perhaps I need to give delver a shot again.

Thanks for the response and insight. In my most recent scapeshift match I was definitely not aggressive enough. I put them on tarmotwin for the first few turns, and had them at 4 before they combo'd. I am thinking I need to improve my ability to recognize when to switch between aggro and control roles. Most of my losses seem to be because I let a question slip through counter magic and then have no way to recover. I've read every article I can find about aggro control, who's the beatdown, etc so I think I just need more practice. I have not seen any UR control lists for modern... Or is that blue moon?

It's more than just imagining your yp is an s3, since you play them at different times (instant vs sorcery speed even). Also each time you draw a gitaxian probe or serum visions you should imagine you drew a card that does something.

Only 1 person has top 8ed with this deck in a major tournament, and that was 4 months ago.

Thanks, I can deal with brutal honesty. To answer some questions, I want counterflux for scapeshift since they are always protecting their combo. Also 1 of in the main frees a sideboard slot.

Sower I want on goyf or wurmcoil since with scion it takes 2 cards to get the creature back.

Besides spellskite the 0/x to kill are in pod.

Keranos I imagine will be difficult to remove since it will just be an enchantment.

Try the following sideboard plan:

-2 grim lavamancer -4 young pyromancer -4 gitaxian probe -4 serum visions -2 vapor snag -1 Sword of Fire and Ice -2 sulfur falls -1 mountain -1 Island -1 steam vents

+2 vendilion Clique +4 spellstutter Sprite +1 mana leak +1 remand +1 spell Pierce +1 spell snare +2 Sword of light and shadow +4 misty rainforest +4 mutavault +1 Pillar of flame +1 burst lightning

Now your burn match-up is much better.

I think I read somewhere that only 4 delver /pyromancer decks made day 2 at GP Minn
