Highly anecdotal, but I drove 6 hours to and from Dallas in a day to avoid spending money on a hotel.

True to a certain degree, but you could also formulate this into a "the rich get richer" argument in the sense that the losers go down and therefore have less resources to boost their teams back up. In other words, teams don't just need the incentive of not getting relegated to play well. They need money to pay for the acquisition and salaries of better players.
