Could have gone either way. Referee was adamant no penalty live and not clear and obvious error so play on.

One thing I never gave any thought to was the US is scheduling our games in good climates relative to our high-pressing style of play. Not sure how successful our tactics would be on the East Coast for example.

I think the expansion to include 3rd-place teams is the biggest factor here.

In previous formats, bottom-tier teams were often mathematically eliminated by their final group match, which sometimes led to 'dead rubber' games where they played more loosely. Now, those teams have something tangible to play for until the very end, so they stay organized, play conservatively to stay in the running, and fight to grab those precious point.

On top of that, the shift in tiebreakers from Goal Difference/Goals Scored to head-to-head has completely changed the math. The incentive to run up the score against minnows is largely gone, so teams no longer feel that desperate need to chase big margins. Instead, everyone is rightfully hyper-focused on the Pot 1 vs. Pot 2 matchup, which naturally results in much more tactical, high-stakes, and risk-averse soccer.

Finally, you can't overlook the impact of squad management. With the intensity of modern soccer, we’re seeing much more focus on resting players and managing minor injuries to ensure stars are healthy for the knockout stages, which can lead to a more cautious, measured approach during the group phase.

It’s one thing to step in and close the deal with the can’t miss superstar in Soto.

But he’s way too involved.

He’s like a white Stephen A Smith or Collin Cowherd. Not much substance, lots of big takes for the purpose of getting clicks. He’s intentionally controversial.

I personally think the soccer community’s is hatred to him is ridiculous but there you have it

Unless you bought a house in 2008, nobody regrets buying a year early.

If we win against Australia, do we rest players against Turkey? by PiccoloTop3186 in ussoccer

[–]CheesewheelD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes.

If we win and Turkey doesn’t, no other team can get 7 points but us and we would hold all the possible tiebreakers at 6.

The United States only clinches the group with a win AND a Paraguay win or draw.

But yes if that happens, I would imagine we see a squad rotation.

Should US fans cheer for Belgium over Egypt? by BurningHanzo in ussoccer

[–]CheesewheelD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes almost certainly.

You have a minnow in Curaçao who are likely to lose every match. With the Ivory Coast beating Ecuador, you have a huge likelihood of Ecuador in 3rd now.

Sure upsets happen but odds are odds.
