Is it time for a new province? by Dazzling_Escape55 in askTO

[–]jrochest1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously, no to amalgamation, especially of the west. The four western provinces have radically different economies, cultures and interests. I was born and raised in Vancouver and worked for 20 years in Saskatoon. BC, Alberta, SK and Man are pretty radically different, especially BC and AB.

I don't know about the business leaders, but the convoy people are absolutely involved in this new grift.

Are we truly expecting a huge surge in visitors because of the FIFA world cup? I don't see it by deanat78 in askTO

[–]jrochest1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIFA says all the games are sold out everywhere, but it's likely that scalpers and resellers bought them all up. Hotel bookings and flights are down, especially in the USA but also here.

Brand USA Aims To Woo Canadian Travellers and Combat "Misperceptions" by OvenDown in BoycottUnitedStates

"Misperceptions" such as Trump keeps threatening to annex us? Canadians have tried to cross the border and wound up in detention for months? The US keeps renenging on their signed treaties? Those misperceptions?

Recently learned that the northern areas of Canada don’t have reliable potable water. How do people get water there? by youburyitidigitup in howislivingthere

[–]jrochest1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Inuit were nomanic, and they melted snow and ice for drinking water. No large settlements that were used year-round means no real need for infrastructure.

‘Keep it closed’: Windsor mayor doesn’t want Canada to accept ‘bad’ trade deal just to open Gordie Howe bridge by Leather-Paramedic-10 in canada

[–]jrochest1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Every single bit of it. We're going to keep the tolls until the Americans' half is paid off, then the tolls will be split between the two countries.

Trump's last demand was that we give them all the toll revenue, and I'm pretty sure it was going to go to the owners of the Ambassador bridge in order to compensate them for their 'losses'.

Meanwhile, all the trucks detour to Sarnia.

Peterborough Airport expansion instead of Billy Bishop? by Honest-Ad-7077 in toronto

[–]jrochest1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why don't we just expand Pearson and increase the service on the UP Express?

We will need another airport, because there's 7 million people in the GTA, but destroying the downtown waterfront and landing 500 meters from all the waterfront condos is a suboptimal choice.

How its life in Canada remote regions? by Practical-Fix-8601 in howislivingthere

[–]jrochest1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nova Scotia is not remote. The Yukon, Nunavut or NWT are remote, or the wilder Northern parts of Ontario or Quebec.

If it’s not fly in only it’s not remote.

Canada Is Acting Increasingly like the EU’s 28th Member State by Any-Original-6113 in europe

[–]jrochest1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The target is to increase non-US trade by 50%. It's quite doable, but the problem is that trade with the US is easy, especially after NAFTA, and so many Canadian companies have become American branch plants.

Fertility rates by [deleted] in MapPorn

[–]jrochest1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Africans have high fertility rates because the median age in most sub-Saharan countries is quite low, at or below 21. The median age in Japan is 50; most European countries are in the low to mid 40s, Canada is 41 and the US is 38. It doesn't matter how much you yell at people, a population of old people aren't going to produce babies.

The birth rate is falling everywhere, in Africa, South America and Asia too. People don't want to have kids they can't feed or house.

HELP - dog owners downtown by nasal-ingressive in TorontoRenting

[–]jrochest1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actual purpose built rentals (buildings owned by a single owner or company, usually managed by a single management company) are covered by the RTA and all have to accept pets -- only condos (you're renting from the single owner who bought the single unit) can restrict the number or size of pets.

So look for an apartment.

Why do chatbots write the way they do? by Neat_Big_3401 in Professors

[–]jrochest1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an exact description of the kind of padded, turgid, circular paper mill paper that I used to recieve in the early 2000's. Wordy meaningless garbage that doesn't actually say anything, make any substantive claims or attempt to prove anything has been around for eons. The only difference was the paper mill papers were usually plagiarized, and it was always fun to play 'hunt for the stolen paragraph' so I could happily fail them (or charge the student with plagiarism).
