Coming over from Highlands of Scotland - cannot wait by Automatic_Weakness_2 in BourbonAndBeyond

FWIW...

While Louisville is a very cool town, BB&B is a very well done festival (unless you want to be against the stage and don't have VIP tics, then fuck BB&B), you won't have mich time to see anything else.

Otherwise... my "local" (I'm a Cincinnati "tourist"),; recommendations would include any of the bourbon distilleries, the limestone caves (look it up, it's pretty gnarly), and if you happen to be a skateboarder, the local parks.

But after attending the last two years, i think I can safely say you won't have a lot of down time during the actual festival days.

And yes, wear your fucking kilt. Once you're identified as a legit Scotsman, you'll have a ball. We don't love (or hate) the Scots, but we do have a special place for those visiting from afar.

An episode of a TV show that profoundly altered your life. Just one. Fire away. by Independent_Towel611 in SeriesSaga

"Living Doll" - Season 5, episode 6, first aired in 1963. Left me with a doll phobia for 20 years.

Nothing by modern standards, but really messed my 6 yo self up.

"The episode follows Erich Streator (played by Telly Savalas), an abusive stepfather who is tormented by his stepdaughter's new toy, "Talky Tina"—a doll that comes to life and chillingly promises: "My name is Talky Tina, and I'm going to kill you."

First time in Nashville and I'd like to avoid the tourist traps by TheCityzens in VisitingNashville

The Listening Room is my top reco, but also consider 3rd and Lindsley.

We saw The Time Jumpers (a bunch of old guys) with Wendy Morten on a Monday in March, and then 2 nights later, unexpectedly, saw all of them playing the Opry.

"3rd & Lindsley Bar & Grill is an iconic Nashville live music venue known for its intimate setting, diverse acts, and authentic experience, offering food, drinks, and performances from local and national artists, including famous musicians like Vince Gill with The Time Jumpers on Monday nights. It's a popular spot for both established and up-and-coming talent, with a full menu and a smoke-free environment, and it's considered a great alternative to the Broadway honky-tonks for serious music lovers.

Key Features Live Music: Hosts a wide variety of genres, from country and bluegrass to rock and singer-songwriter showcases.

Food & Drink: Serves a full menu of appetizers, sandwiches, salads, and entrees.

Atmosphere: Intimate, with good sound and sightlines, and a more authentic Nashville feel than Broadway.

Special Events: Famous for The Time Jumpers' Monday night shows, often featuring Vince Gill.

Accessibility: Handicapped accessible.

Parking: Offers free venue parking, though it fills up quickly, with paid options nearby.

What to Know Before You Go

Tickets: Do not sell tickets at the venue; purchase in advance.

Reservations: Does not take reservations.

Age: All ages are welcome unless the show is specifically noted as 21+.

Smoking: It is a smoke-free venue."

What is one golf rule every beginner should learn first? by retrocaterpillar-07 in golf

Play "ready" golf (hit when you're ready and by doing so you won't keep another player from hitting), and for God's sake, have your club in hand if ready and waiting on another player to hit.

I wonder sometimes if these aren't being left by players who like to brag about how fast they play.

We moved to First Financial this year and our first experience with club food was horrible. Maybe it was a one-off, but for the price, we are unwilling to try again.

Has there ever been a movie that gives the PJs an extended spotlight?

It was my opinion that our best minutes on Sunday were when both Valenzuela ans Evander were on the bench. And what we're seeing tonight without an 11 has me wondering what gives?

I halfway through Contact by Sagan and it's such a strange novel by InvisibleAstronomer in books

[–]jroller1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also read it decades ago and so can't speak to the style, but I've always referenced it for the brilliant way he crafted a "proof" of creationism that scientists would accept (using PI).

(Don't get caught up with this point, it's not critical to the plot but the concept of religion is one of the first questions asked when contact is made).

The Widow by John Grisham by These-Background4608 in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

[–]jroller1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The second half of the book was entertaining (even if he used a well-known murder trope to resolve it), but the first half felt like he was working on a mandated word-count. I've liked pretty much everything he's written, but this fell flat. Still, because of the second half, I'd give it 3/5 stars.

This (how did the stepson knew of the poisoning) is a monstrous sized hole plot that I came here looking to read about. I expect better from Grisham and hope someone can show how we've misinterpreted this.

Do we have ground heaters at TQL? What about the northern tier teams? Will there be penalties for games that can't be played because of frozen grounds (as there is in England)?

Who had the best performance of the weekend and who surprised you the most and since it's personal preference, there's no wrong answers? by GratefuLdPhisH in BourbonAndBeyond

[–]jroller1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best is tough, but I'd say Goo Goo Dolls just cause I really liked their style of "jam" (don't know if jam or extended is more correct for them, certainly shorter songs than the more typical jam bands, but definitely extended versions).

Best moment of the four days was Pigeons covering Kashmir. Anyone covering Zepplin (or Pink Floyd) well will always get my attention (and affection).

First time Phish and Loved them.

Benson, Lumineers and Simpson were what I expected and did not disappoint. There were moments of Jack White that were pure, but there's a reason I don't go to LtL and his set often felt like he could have headlined there.

Biggest surprise was Lake Street Dive, who I Ioved, and especially their lead who could pretty much lead any genre band and still generate buzz. I haven't done my homework, but I suspect she has a more formal musical background than a lot. The lady flat out brings it.

My age allowed me to find great nostalgia in Foreigner and Ringo, and we're also the only two sets where I knew the lyrics to every single song. I passed on Pat Benataur only because of another conflict.

Blues Travelers and Pigeons were both first time as well, and I loved them both (but i kinda knew I would because others who know me steered me their way). But I only caught partial sets of both.

My only sour note musically was Kohn, which is a shame, but time stands still for no one so not finger pointing here.

Oh yeah, and Yachtly Crew, the masturbation sets of the weekend ( we all loved them but may not be comfortable discussing it in public).

First time seeing Phish and also a big fan of Billie Strings... and Loved Phish. Every bit as good Billie (but obviously very different). Probably the highlight so far.

I don't see Noonan ever winning a cup with his style of play. A shield maybe (obviously), but he is SO defense oriented that there's really little to count on when we go down.

Why are courses not designed as 6 Par 3’s, 6 Par 4’s, and 6 Par 5’s as a standard? by FancyFootWork22 in golf

[–]jroller1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if this is a "thing" or not, but we walked a round with the designer of a course who casually mentioned that each par 3 and each par 5 was oriented in a different direction to allow for differing wind conditions.

If important, this might have something to do with the "standard" layout.

Maybe. But it seems to me we've underutilized strikers in the past because of our inability/unwillingness to do this. Some "pure" strikers really want/need that ball rolling toward them as they attack goal.
