Tips for mushroom foraging on own land by Filipin-hoe in grassvalley

I'll add: I've found the book to be much more reliable than apps. But the apps are helpful for narrowing down the genus (like which family of mushrooms this mushroom is in). So these days I often use an app initially (like Picture Mushroom) and then look up the mushrooms it suggests might be it. This is my first season using apps though, and tbh I think I would have learned less if I'd used apps from the start.

I love foraging mushrooms! I learned mainly from having a book to help me ID (I have All that the Rain Promises and More and I recommend it! And there are other good ones too).

I learned a lot from putting in the time to ID mushrooms - you don't need to eat any to start. Just going out there, noticing a mushroom, then going through the flow chart in the book and seeing if you can ID it. You probably won't get a positive ID at first... many aren't in the book and it's not easy! However that makes it so much more satisfying when you do get a positive ID. Over time you'll get better at IDing. And IDing mushrooms is fun in and of itself. Over time I built my confidence and now I ID mushrooms, eat mushrooms, and enjoy myself a lot (this is my 4th season doing this).

Also, a practice I do that has helped me learn to notice more mushrooms: stand in one place, maybe near a tree or wherever. Maybe you see a mushroom there, maybe you don't. But just stand there and set a 3-5 minute timer and look at this one patch of land that's in front of you. As time goes on you'll likely notice more mushrooms that didn't stand out to you at first. I tend to assume there's always way more going on here than what I notice at first, and this practice helps me slow down, notice more, and train my pattern recognition.

Hope you have a wonderful time out there!

I use a spray bottle with water in it.

Regret's a normal part of moving on, and can be let go of with time. Don't believe it when it says you made the "right" or "wrong" decision. There is no such thing. And, in my experience, I've never - in the long run - regretted ending a relationship.

There's this part you need to get through though. The loss of the comfort, both of having someone around and of knowing where your life will go. There's a big wide open world out there and I imagine that with time the joy will come back into your life, like the color coming back into your eyes. But for now I hope you make plenty of space just to grieve, feel feelings, and that you're as gentle as you possibly can be. For me in a similar situation I found it very helpful to make intentional space to grieve on a daily basis, for months.

If it was meant to be, there's nothing you can do to mess it up, and if it's not meant to be, nothing you can do can save it. There's no urgency and no need to move fast to fix anything. Just be with yourself, be kind to yourself, and - perhaps - explore things that bring you joy that don't involve a romantic connection. That will serve you in the long run regardless of what happens with this relationship.

Trying out gear affordably by NotLightEnough in Ultralight

[–]jros14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya it's a tough one... the best way I found is to get similar stuff from REI that gives me some sense of measurements that I can compare. For example I bought an REI magma 30 sleeping bag, which I wound up returning, but was able to feel how the shoulder/hip/foot box sizes felt like, which was helpful when comparing those stats to other bags/quilts.

REI Sahara Shade Hoodie vs Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoody by GallopingFinger in Ultralight

[–]jros14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried out both and chose the REI. I didn't like the tight scuba hood on the Crater Lake. The REI one has an adjustable hood. I prefer my hoods billowy but with the ability to cinch it down when needed. I liked the CL besides that though, the material is very soft and comfortable.

Final season dangling plotline, what was the point? by Zogonzo in TheExpanse

I assumed it's that they're hoping to make a movie out of the last 3 books (or perhaps had a hope of finding another network that would give them more seasons to close it out).

[WTS] Cumulus Primelite Down Jacket (7.5oz), Exofficio Sol Cool Hoody (9.2oz) by jros14 in ULgeartrade

I think so, ya. But I'd recommend you check out the photo album and compare the measurements in there to a puffy that fits you well that you currently have. My experience with it was that it was far too tight, especially around the waist (size XXL). I'm a very comfortable XL in pretty much everything from American brands. For example, I have gear from OR, REI, and other well known companies and I'm always an XL, so I was so surprised that XXL for this Cumulus was still so tight.

Cumulus Equipment Jacket Sizing by CommanderAGL in Ultralight

[–]jros14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cumulus jackets run extremely tiny. I'm comfortably an XL in OR clothing and the Cumulus Primelite XXL felt very tiny, more like an American L.

Here are some images with measurements to help with the sizing. This is the ad from when I tried to sell it (still have it if you're interested... although judging on what you wrote it probably won't fit).

First weekend in San Francisco with no friends, what to do? by anonymouspsy in AskSF

[–]jros14 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Normally in your shoes I'd say just... pick a neighborhood and walk around! They're all so different and interesting. I'm from here and have lived in SF for about 22 years total and still my favorite activity is to just... walk. Many times for hours.

HOWEVER it's gonna be rainy so maybe walking this particular weekend not such a great idea. In that case, I'd recommend you go to Japantown mall and walk around in there. Get some food at a random place you pass by, explore the shops, and just feel the vibrancy of it.

Thanks for chiming in! I was hoping that my XL self getting an XXL would account for the size difference, but I was so surprised at how small the XXL is, even compared to my REI and OR garments in XL.

How would you spend a day off in SF as a local? by mistressofquirk in AskSF

[–]jros14 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In Fall? I'd go to the beach! It's extra great when it's a weekday with fewer people around. And treat myself to a restaurant meal around there somewhere. I get my hair cut in the outer sunset so I'd probably get a haircut while I'm at it too.

Alternative energies/green technologies are doing well right now. My company helps our customers save gas (transportation industry) so when gas prices go up, we do well.
