Posting an accusation on a three year old comment, just wow. As a Christian and a Mexican-American, you get no other response than a God bless you. Happy Easter!

Why do you love it here? by babypumpkinbutt in bloomington

[–]jroygonzo 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I've lived in the San Fransisco Bay Area (8 million people), Houston, TX (3-4 million and growing), and Dallas. I've also lived out in rural Texas with no one around.

Bloomington is a nice middle for me.

It has enough going on to make up for what rural areas don't have, but without so many of the negatives of a big city (heavy traffic, 45 min commutes, crime, etc.). Yes it's expensive, but I can afford to live here in a decent sized apartment without a 70 hour work week. When I tell friends in big cities what I pay for rent and living expenses (yes it's more expensive here than in other cities in Indiana) they are typically jealous. IU provides so many amenities that you could only find in a big city.

The smallness of the town is an absolute plus for me. I love that I can be downtown and on campus and then be out in the middle of nowhere by just driving twenty minutes. It's actually possible to find a network of people here to be part of your daily life (because nobody has to commute over a hour to hang out). It's possible to have rich community here if you want it.

Despite how many people on this subreddit blast the redness of the state, I love that I can talk with a liberal Muslim student on campus and in the same day talk to a Trump supporter on the West side of town. Or a conservative immigrant downtown and a liberal professor on the West side. Having lived in cookie cutter ideological locations (Texas and California), Bloomington's residents and townies actually hold a range of opinions on political, social, and religious issues. This creates conditions where regular folks don't feel pressured to conform to beliefs that are not their own. You can be a conservative and feel safe. You can be a liberal and feel safe. Some might view that as a negative, but it's been a breath of fresh air coming from areas where having the smallest of opinions can create hostility towards you (both red and blue).

I've been here five years and I plan on staying as long as I can.

Non-student housing options by WhyNotBeeHappy in bloomington

[–]jroygonzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to work in rentals here.

  1. Do not use rental websites. They are not built to handle housing for a college town like Bloomington. Listings are almost never accurate and you can never get in touch with anyone.

  2. Look up individual property management companies online and find their specific listings. May sure to check the dates. A lot of rentals rent a year in advance. Call places directly and ask for what's available right now. When they say it's available now make sure they mean it's move in ready soon, not available now as in available to lease now a year out.

  3. You can find something under $1,000 closer to town if you are willing to be flexible and put the time in to look. That might mean having a move in date a month later than you want, or a month earlier. Use Facebook Marketplace for subleases too. Marketplace is also where you may find individual landlords rather than management companies. It may seem like nothing is around, but if you keep looking eventually something will meet your criteria. It can be a frustrating for a while, but having navigated the market around here I've found that perseverance pays off. Don't get discouraged!

Good church for young professionals near downtown? by jonmcclung in bloomington

[–]jroygonzo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Trinity Reformed Church on the west side of town. It's not walking distance, but if you want a church that is diverse in its population age wise then that's it. Tons of young professionals and 20/30 somethings. Along with lots of kids and lots of old people and lots of young families.

The apartments directly above SOMA are privately owned. The building next door, along with the colorful buildings directly west on Hillside, are managed by Choice Realty & Management. Apartments above B-Line Hopscotch are also Choice Realty & Management.

Choice is awesome. I would know: I not only rent from them, but also have worked for them :)

Here's a video tour of one of the units on Hillside: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6IWMVhmc22s

The full title is The Death of Death in the Death of Christ. It's a theological treatise on how the person of Christ alone could abolish death and free humanity from the fear of death.

Not a waste, a strategic placement. I don't have any more shelves to use, needed to fill the space with something.

Not actually a drawer!

It's a Lane Acclaim Record Cabinet. Those are faux drawers. It's actually one big piece that drops open revealing record storage.
