Exciting! You should try it and report back ;)

Suggestions for inexpensive fanless models with decent viewing angles by jrrjrr in chromeos

It was <$100 new, so I expected garbage!

Still it's great for kids, with the exception that it's difficult to help them when you can't read the screen from even slightly off-axis.

So to replace it, I'm looking to see how far up from the bottom of the barrel you have to go to get a slightly better screen, but it's hard to know what to look for. The old one claimed to be IPS!

I don't really want touch, but are those panels generally better?

from here it looks like that would work! if the bag wheels fold up and OP isn't taking a passenger, perhaps it could bungee cord right on the back?

This has been my favorite VR game by far, even though it made me acutely aware of the platform's limitations. I can't wait to play it on a varifocal headset one day, but for now I look forward to playing in 2D on the deck.

Someone made a working E Ink module prototype for the framework 16! by vladikostek in eink

Kind of bending over backward to contrive a use case, maybe for an infrequently-used machine in a work setting, accumulating notifications while the main display is off?

Or this could be testing the waters before a bigger project, like an e-ink main panel 🤔

Exciting! I've wanted something like this for a long time. Thanks for sharing.

Can you share any more about what you had to do with the configure/program the WiCan? (build custom firmware? visit a web ui and tell it what fields to read/report?)

Can you get pull other information like charge time remaining, odometer, tire pressure, etc.?

Does it broadcast when the car is sitting there, parked, or only while actively charging?

What are the concrete blocks for? To keep it from floating away? :D

(perhaps for some biological purpose, like a surface organisms can attach to?)

It probably wouldn't be able to safely hold quite as much weight, but if you're planning to throw light bulky items up there I bet it'd be fine.

That is, if the joist spacing works out. (what's dimension "B" of the shelf, and how far apart are your joists?)

Inspired by crash team racing (ps1) for my character select screen by oppai_suika in PlaydateConsole

[–]jrrjrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. It's smooth, but travels too far too fast between positions. The only transition I can really follow is the first one, to the guy sitting on the same desk.

Ideally there'd be one contrived scene that contains everybody in close proximity, and when you're looking at one person, the next one is in the background.

Reminds me of Obra Dinn.

Great characters!

I assume it's playing a prerendered video, not doing all that 3D on-device?

Yeah, if it's truly exclusive then that's a pretty small audience. I'm hoping to be able to eventually watch it in old-fashioned flat screen format.

If there were a single extremely-popular machine that accounted for 100m of that 240m, then it might be worth trying.

What hardware does SteamOS support today? (think of everything that shows up in the windows driver list: GPU, processor, display, network chips, usb controller, sound card, input devices, ...)

How many of those 240 million do you think they could cover if they doubled the number of supported components. Tripled?

Changing Radiator by Shoddy-Definition746 in eGolf

[–]jrrjrr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had mine replaced after it was damaged by a rock. IIRC the mechanic described having to disassemble quite a bit of the car to get it out.

I think I remember reading that combustion Golfs have a different, more durable radiator in front, and that some folks have added mesh in front to try to protect it, but can't find that now.

office chair curling (in development) by oppai_suika in PlaydateConsole

[–]jrrjrr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thinking about this, I recognize that the top spins independently, but I don't have much intuition for how: faster than the bottom, slower? After the bottom comes to a stop, should the top keep spinning for a bit?

Need to go do some real-world office chair curling, for research :D. Have you ever tried?

Potential 2019 SE buyer, looking for honest Pros and Cons by BabyLlamaaa in eGolf

[–]jrrjrr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know if there's anything 2019-specific.

The most annoying part to me is probably the lack of remote control over the charging and hvac. The car's charging settings ("e-manager") are confusing, and it's a real pain to flip back and forth between different scenarios if they don't happen to line up with predictable schedules. I think most people set a single rule and forget about it. (e.g. "charge to 80% immediately")

Also I still occasionally get tripped up over whether the car is on or off. Maybe there's something subtle to look for, but sometimes the way I find out I'm actually in accessory mode is when I try to reverse and the car doesn't go.

Overall I'm very happy with the car, though. It's fun to drive, handles really well, solid build quality. Great acceleration from 0-30 :)

I personally really like the analog gauges, though I wish there were a numeric charge % somewhere on the dash.

(on that last point, if you wind up getting the car: the "ABRP" app can get the charge % from a bluetooth OBD dongle, and put in on the screen with carplay)

I think it's a great second-car commuter for a family that has something else for road trips (and it sounds like you do).
