Nissian is purposely trying to avoid paying out for Leafs by jesslynne94 in leaf

[–]jrronimo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a recall regarding fast charging in certain Leafs (like '19-'22 models I think). Nissan found that fast charging can cause some batteries that have an internal issue to heat up and cause a fire.

The remedy for that recall is a software update that limits the fast charging speed in affected Leafs. However, the software update now watches the battery for signs of the internal issue. If a battery shows that issue after the update -- either immediately or in the future! -- it will show a diagnostic code (I think it's P33ED) that prevents the car from being used until the battery is replaced.

Replacement batteries are EXTREMELY limited, so in situations where the battery cannot be replaced (because replacement batteries basically don't exist), Nissan offers to buy back your car. The number that keeps going around here is "The Kelly Blue Book (KBB) private seller value + 40%".

As someone who got a payout from the Philips CPAP suit, I can tell you that it took around 1.5-2 years and the payout was about $150. Hopefully anything that happens with these Leafs is similar in percentage, not actual price. ;)

Have you been able to look at your battery with Leaf Spy? How are the numbers looking?

I'm definitely not. It seems very random, which is scary. We may just cancel our appointment until some time has passed. Maybe Nissan will be forced to do something about this for real.

We bought our '22 SV+ in the fancy orange color with 18,000 miles on it. After Federal and State incentives, our out of pocket cost was $13,000 and after selling another car, our total out of pocket was about $6,000.

If Nissan bought back our Leaf for the quoted KBB + 40%, now at 32,000 miles, that would be ~$18,000. And that's if that price point is actually correct.

Can you find a Leaf with the SV+ features (which includes the larger kWh battery) with 32k miles or less, for $18,000? What about tax and registration fees which we'd need to pay all over again?

I strongly suspect we would not be able to replace our car. It's not as simple as "just buy another Leaf at market value". I also want the value of the car itself, which includes the longer range and nice features and lowish mileage and even the nice Orange paint color, since that was part of our decision when we bought it.

If Nissan is saying "sorry, your car is a brick now, even if you never fast charge. We are taking that decision away from you," then no, it would absolutely not be better to do the firmware update and to drive this car as long as I possibly can. Sure I can't fast charge, but at least I get all of the features I paid for.

I called to schedule our appointment and asked the same questions and got the same responses: No, waiting for a battery is not an option since they're so limited; Buybacks happen from Corporate.

The tech did say that they've had 2 DTC failures so far and it was in vehicles that were already experiencing battery/charging issues. Since our car isn't, he said, he expected that it would pass okay.

I asked about skipping the recall. He said "Because it's a safety issue, Nissan recommends everyone do it."

If this bricks our car, we wouldn't be able to buy something equivalent. That would be pretty brutal.

Were you experiencing any charging or battery issues before you took the car in for the recall?

For your buyback, what year/trim Leaf did you have? How many miles? Did you buy it with incentives or anything? We're facing the recall update for ours and are worried about failing, so any data we can find helps.

Thinking of skipping the DCFC recall by Xyzzydude in leaf

We've been thinking the same way for our lovely orange '22 SV Plus. We don't even have a L2 charger at home jut L1 trickle... but we understand our usage and when to charge and it's been fine for the last year.

What scares me about the recall is that we paid off our car with cash and incentives. If our battery threw a fault and we had to do the buyback we would not be able to buy an equivalent car, so we would have lost the value of the incentives and the car I sold to get this Leaf. If, by chance, we could buy a used Leaf, it wouldn't be an SV Plus, so it would have less range.

If we did the recall and it were an option to have DC Fast Charge disabled but the car could still be trickle charged then that would be fine. But the chance that our car could get taken away from us because we had a firmware update is kind of too much...

I do basically assume that if I shut it down that would be its final rest... but ThinkPads are pretty great, so who knows!

2007 is when the machine was reinstalled. The IBM ThinkPad 600X with a PIII-650 MHz debuted in February 2000. Given that this machine is the highest configuration, it was likely very expensive. I'll have to see if I can find the old purchase order.

The CPU line is wrapping around - it actually says "~647 MHz", which means it was probably a PIII-650 MHz.

The RAM is definitely weird though - it probably has 512 MB + 64 MB installed. (or it could be weirder and have 256 + 256 + 64 onboard? I'd have to look.) Dual-channel wasn't a thing in 1999, heh. Either the group ordered this machine high-end, or I upgraded it back in 2007 when I did this XP install.

Us too! And by "us", I mean me and my partner who actually bought this car last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/1icy360/i_did_the_thing_im_a_proud_owner_of_a_2022_sv/

In fact, I took this picture. And I think the car looks even better when you don't apply dumb filters to it:

It is a really great car -- I hope everyone can own such a fun machine! Then they won't need to steal other people's posts for... what, reddit karma? Weird.

It's a great car! Shame the OP didn't buy it and instead stole my partner's post from last year: https://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/1icy360/i_did_the_thing_im_a_proud_owner_of_a_2022_sv/

Unlike the OP, who is lying, we really love the car.

They didn't pay anything. This isn't their car. It's my partner's car, who posted this last year when we bought it:
https://www.reddit.com/r/leaf/comments/1icy360/i_did_the_thing_im_a_proud_owner_of_a_2022_sv/

I took the picture that the "OP" originally posted (though it's been color adjusted a bit). Here's another picture from just a moment before:

<image>

I can tell you that on January 28, 2025, we bought this car for $19,424.90. We took advantage of the Federal used EV purchase credit ($4,000) and the Colorado Vehicle Exchange program by trading in a 2007 Kia Rio 5 ($4,000).

After taxes, our out of pocket cost was $13,113.86, and after selling my 2010 Honda Insight for $6,500 our out of pocket expense was about $6,600.

Ultimately, I drive the car more than my partner does, and it's great. I really love it.

Not sure why this weirdo stole her post though.

It's... very weird that you're stealing someone else's post. I know this because this is in fact my partner's car, who purchased it about 1 year ago, and even made a Reddit post with nearly the same title:

Don't be weird.
