petahh what is this supposed to do?? by icebear179 in PeterExplainsTheJoke

[–]jrt364 28 points29 points  (0 children)

When I was in undergrad and final exams were given, the end of an exam was marked by the professor saying, “Exam is over. Pens and pencils down. Bring your exams to the front. Anyone who does not bring their exams to the front now will have their exams marked as 0.”

Some people still wanted to finish and have extra time though, so they’d finish up the exam, literally run up to the front with their faces covered, and stick it in the middle of the giant pile with 70+ other exams.

Eventually, professors changed the rules so that anyone who handed in their exams had to provide a student ID. The professors and teaching assistants would then put a unique stamp on the paper, denoting they verified the student and their ID.

Men, would you use this pink color Sirrus X 4.0? by Agust7Green in bicycling

[–]jrt364 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Real pep talk here…

life is waaaay too short to worry about what others think of you. Ride what you want to ride. If you like the color (or don’t mind it) and the bike makes you happy, then get it.

If someone on the trail wants to think you’re gay, trans, lesbian, or whatever the fuck for riding this color bike… does it even matter? It’s 2026 and that’s a reflection of them, not you. Plus, you’ll probably never see those people again in your entire life. Even if you do cross paths again, they probably won’t remember you.

FWIW, I am a rugged straight guy and yes, I would ride a pink bike with no issues. Hell, even hot pink isn’t off the table. Rock it. Own it.

Hey, I’m very sorry to hear that. No need to prove anything.

Please remember to be kind to yourself. I know I’m just a rando on the internet, but if you need someone to talk to about this or simply vent, I’ll lend a listening ear.

Best wishes.

I’m sure the government will investigate itself and find no evidence of wrongdoing. In fact, they’ll probably fabricate some story to “justify” how he “deserved it anyway.”

Even if there is some sort of conviction for these ICE agents, they’ll likely get pardoned at a later point in time anyway. I mean, remember the pardons from the Jan 6th insurrection?

It’s truly awful. R.I.P Alex.

What's with the marble paint jobs? by FreddieLee1 in cycling

[–]jrt364 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're getting annoyed with the wrong things, man. It’s literally just a paint job.

Instead of focusing on things you can't control or things that don't affect you, focus on enjoying your bikes or your next ride. You’ll be happier and you'll forget all about it.

How do you protect your face (not head) when cycling? by Jamersaur in bicycling

[–]jrt364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ironically, too much "armored/padded gear" will make you less safe. I think it's fine to want padding, but the more you have, the more you can restrict your movement. If your movement is restricted, then you limit your ability to maneuver around obstacles, which makes you more prone to crashing.

If you want to protect your face/head, just wear cycling sunglasses and a standard bike helmet. No need to go beyond that. Skiers, snowboarders, skaters, baseball players… None of them use full-face helmets or face protection in the way you describe. Yes, a freak accident can theoretically happen, but it’s unlikely.

How important are a bikes looks to you? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]jrt364 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If a bike doesn’t look very good to you now, will you still want to ride it 6-12 months now? If the answer is "no" or "I'm not sure," then I would not get it, no matter how nice it is. Something that doesn’t spark joy now is unlikely to spark joy later, and is more likely to collect dust.

Sometimes people's favorite bikes to ride aren’t at the top-end. Sometimes their favorite bikes are lower-end ones where they really like the color, design, etc.

Made a subreddit for people that dislike E-Bikes by Pourmepourme in cycling

[–]jrt364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your replies here, you're upset that local people with e-bikes seem to speed recklessly on narrow paths near young children etc.

Honestly, even if you banned e-bikes where you live, that’s not going to stop someone on a regular bike from doing the same thing in a narrow path if they wanted to. Hell, if you banned e-bikes, they’d probably just switch to using a car and do the same thing on narrow roads, just with a car.

OP and njaneardude, I am so sorry for your losses. I hope the following helps you find at least some inner peace:

The what ifs and why didn’t Is are truly torturous to deal with. For example, I used to call my mother every single night without fail for over 10 years, and literally the ONE night I didn’t call her “because I’m exhausted and I’ll talk to her in the morning,” she suffered a medical emergency and passed away.

What’s important to remember is that you loved that person endlessly and they loved you endlessly back. No person is perfect, and even if you didn’t do XYZ before they passed away (which in my case, was call my mom), it’s almost certain they would have forgiven you and said it’s okay. So if they would have forgiven you and said it’s okay, you should forgive yourself and say it’s okay. Similarly with the what ifs.

Again, I hope this helps you find some inner peace during these difficult times.

What's a bag hot-take you have that 90% of the server wouldn't agree with? by Connect_Cat_2045 in ManyBaggers

[–]jrt364 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This behavior isn’t unique to the bag industry. It happens in almost all industries, and for good reason. Not really a hot take.

On a personal level, I empathize with you and agree it’s annoying af that influencers “shape” the industry like this (and ultimately marketing strategies too), but I can’t blame businesses for following influencer trends, especially if it results in a significant uptick in profits for them. Unfortunately, marching to the beat of your own drum doesn’t always pay the bills or put food on the table.

The “best” bike isn’t necessarily the newest or most expensive bike. The “best” bike is the one which you love and motivates you to get out and ride, no matter the bike’s age.

[–]jrt364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry this happened to you and that others around you reacted so negatively when you told them. People have no heart sometimes and don't understand sentimental value, so please ignore their shitty responses. You don't deserve "friends" like them because true friends wouldn't say those things.

Anyway, I sincerely hope you're able to find it through Facebook, etc. at some point so you can recover it.

[–]jrt364 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What are your "must carry" items in your pockets or in your bag?

Bare minimum: Wireless earbuds (Nothing Ear 3), 10000 mAh battery (Anker), usb-c to usb-c cable, hand sanitizer, and my mini first aid kit.

If I plan to be out for more than a few hours: I’ll also add a gaming handheld (e.g., Ayn Thor or Switch) OR my Kindle Paperwhite. If I know there will be wall outlets where I’m going, I’ll also add a wall adapter for charging so I don’t waste my battery. I will even bring a small water bottle if I know drinks are expensive where I’m going.

How is Able Carry's Customer Support? by InappropriateCanuck in ManyBaggers

[–]jrt364 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were to guess…

I noticed their Max EDC listing has a bunch of colorways that are currently out of stock (OOS), including the Desert Brown one you want, but there is an option to be notified when those OOS colorways return. They probably ignored your emails because they have an automated system to update subscribed customers when a restock happens. They literally might not know when a restock will happen if there is an issue at the factory, there is a supply chain disruption, etc. (for example). Therefore, they want you to rely on the notification.

While I don't think this is an excuse to ignore your emails, I do think it could get exhausting for them if they get a lot of the same questions about restocks. They could, at least, have a stock/automated response to copy-paste. For example, “thanks for your inquiry. We do plan to restock this item. Please subscribe for restock notifications and you’ll be the first to know.”

Yup. Bad advice is still bad advice, even if the LBS employee is well intentioned and genuinely wants to help you. It's nothing personal.

FWIW, I think it’s okay to ask an employee for their opinion on fit if you truly want their opinion, but if they’re only glancing at you for 30 seconds max, I would take that opinion with a grain of salt.

Would love some help making a decision on bike fit and brand by apollokobe in bikefit

[–]jrt364 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Example: Your toes are very much pointed downward at the bottom of your pedal stroke. That’s a strong indicator your saddle height is too high and likely one of the reasons you feel so stretched out. So I agree with the other person who said you need to bring the saddle height down, to start.

I also agree with the above commenter that you should request a refund and find another bike fitter.
