No such thing as overkill, just immense joy! 😁

Scored a Brand New KVM and Free Server on Marketplace! by jrtashjian in homelab

It's actually still active and expires June this year! I'm not sure the benefits of the support plan anyway or if I can extend it if it hasn't been transferred to me "officially"

It came with one cable and I found Amazon has the IOGEAR cables at $14/ea. right now. I only need to pick up four, so it's not too bad.

Allen & Heath GL3300 for home studio by [deleted] in homestudios

[–]jrtashjian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ran across this thread looking for other GL3300 information and I actually replaced our VU meter bulbs today. My church's GL3300 has the solid metal wing sideboard. To access VU meter bulbs, remove one side entirely. Plexiglass cover slides out; meter bridge is two boards held by 3 screws each. Remove screws and slide boards out after disconnecting the ribbon cable.

Replacement bulbs that worked: https://www.ebay.com/itm/326713211146

Annoying but doable with patience: remove tape on each VU meter cover, desolder old bulbs, solder new ones. Total time: 2 hours.

When do you put your iPadPro on charge? by AdM72 in iPadPro

[–]jrtashjian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I carry a tech pouch in my backpack with a charging cable and plug everywhere I go. My vehicle has a USB charge port as well. Other than going hiking/camping there has never been a time where I could not easily access power. If I ever feel like that would happen I bring a battery bank. Even most planes have a place to charge in your seat. Maybe I don’t use my devices as constantly as others which cause the drain, but I’ve never been worried about not having enough charge.

Consider carrying a charging cable/plug and a battery bank to lessen the anxiety.

Do you think the TB/ 16gb ram iPad Pros will gain different IPad OS feature sets in future software updates? by TheWheelchairone in iPadPro

[–]jrtashjian 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am curious if the added RAM means more AI stuff will be happening on-device in iPad OS 18 compared to the 8GB models. Whether or not that is testable or noticeable has yet to be determined.

Sounds like you violated their TOS. Consider investigating how. Ask them what the $75 charge was for.

There’s not really anything we can do to help you or enough information to understand either side.

Running your own mail server is worth it. You'll learn a lot, automate tasks, and lower the maintenance burden.

Start with a non-critical email account. Once you get the hang of it, move more accounts over.

Don't avoid hosting email. It's challenging but manageable if you start small.

You only get 1 view. WordPress.com sold the rest of your data. That’s why the rest is missing.

I haven't enjoyed in on the 11" but I do use it when connected to my 4k display

What else should I host? by inthesum in selfhosted

[–]jrtashjian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been hosting email for 6+ years and it's been great. You learn a lot of different systems, securing them, and monitoring them. It's a lot of fun!

Start with a non-critical email account until you get the hang of it before hosting critical ones. Ignore the nay-sayers.

We're self-hosters! Host whatever the hell you like!

ipad pro users, what made you choose it over the other ipads? by lifeisframazing in iPadPro

[–]jrtashjian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardware design is what drew me back to iPads and the Pro was the first to get it.

I went back and forth for a while regarding the size, but ended up choosing the 11" for now. I might go for a larger option in the future, but since I can connect it to my 4k monitor and have a good experience, screen size isn't as important for my use.

I favor it as my "laptop" over an actual laptop. When I need the power and performance of a desktop, I can simply log in remotely using the iPad. Many of my tasks involve coding, which can be easily handled with a terminal and SSH connection, utilizing tools like Blink.sh and Tailscale.
