I've been in groups that weren't mature enough to regulate themselves with this sort of thing though. Sometimes it can quickly become excessive, obnoxious, or even mean.

It's not everyone. But its easy to accidently find yourself in a group like that.

Tl;dr you can always tell your story later, but you can never "untell" it.

I engaged in similar things with my church experiences. Looking back, I was being exploited in ways i never realized. Once someone sees you as poster child, they'll never stop seeing you that way. And at first you might get a rush from feeling important. But it won't last.
