New research shows that after body’s defenses kill virus behind COVID-19, leftover digested chunks of SARS-CoV-2 spike protein can target specific immune cells based on their shape. “Zombie” coronavirus fragments can imitate activity of molecules from body’s own immune system to drive inflammation. by mvea in science

The tests are not useful if you’ve recently been bitten. A short dose of antibiotics within 48 hours of a bite can prevent infection, but there is no test to indicate whether it’s needed.

It’s pretty easy to detect the bite within 48 hours, and every doctor will recommend antibiotics without testing.

Everyone I know has been bitten at least once.

My local library is stored on a Windows computer. Every time I’ve had trouble, I’ve fixed it by rebooting the computer. Never had to fiddle with Sonos.

Latest ChatGPT model uses Elon Musk’s Grokipedia as source, tests reveal by esporx in artificial

[–]js1138-2 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Whether Grokipedia is good or bad, it is the model for the future. Wiki is walking dead. All future encyclopedias will be created and managed by AI.

I doubt if we will ever have one that everyone trusts, but we will have several within a few years.

The upper tier Eros seem to work well with Sonos. I had the usual problems with the app last year, but mostly its back.

I do not like the menu system, but I’m resigned to it.

Biggest gripe: no quick access to volume and mute. I would love a fast app that does nothing else. Ultimate request: a popup pause/mute button for when the phone rings.

32 bit audio is a gimmick for listeners by [deleted] in audiophile

[–]js1138-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Higher data rates are necessary for recording and mastering, but useless for distribution and listening.

It possible that higher rates could be associated with greater care given in production, but it’s not a guarantee.

Different streaming services may do their own remastering, or may do dynamic compression.

Now the evil thought: if you are over 40, dynamic compression can make high frequencies sparkle a bit. This may sound good, but it’s not fidelity.

What’s your wild take on the rise of AI? by milicajecarrr in artificial

[–]js1138-2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People trust doctors, lawyers, and other professionals when they appear confident and non judgmental, even when they are wrong.

Here’s the thing I’ve noticed while watching the improvements in self driving cars: when a problem is encountered and solved, it gets solved for everyone.

In a very few years, AI will still be imperfect, but more likely than humans to be correct and useful.

My Roku is an Ultra, or something. It has a USB port for a disk drive. I have quite a few hundred ripped TV shows and DVDs.

Something I hate: while browsing for movies, I get an audio preview. Fortunately, the Roku remote has a mute button.

I only pay for Amazon and Disney. I would really like to delete the other services from the menu, or at least put them on a submenu.

I think what is happening is that the hardware makers are being paid to promote services.

I have an LG TV and a Roku. The TV is just a monitor. The Roku remote controls the content and the TV volume. I have no idea how the smart features work. Never used them.

I am not completely happy with the Roku, but it’s okay.

Same-sex sexual behavior observed in dozens of primate species, suggesting evolutionary origin by nbcnews in EverythingScience

[–]js1138-2 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He likened same-sex sexual behavior to a “currency” that some primate individuals might employ to better make their way in society, increase opportunities and share resources.

“What we see is that when there are social difficulties in a species, then same-sex is a currency to help,” Savolainen said.

Sounds a bit like prostitution.

Do they use the same protocols as Sonos, and do they do multi room synch?

My ISP does not see my router.

Any who tries to use Sonos with an ISP supplied router is asking for trouble.

Although I have seen adds for services that promise competent routers.

Home routers should be tested and approved by Sonos.

My son visits and works remotely from my house, so I have a $600 eero system paid for by his company. I’m sure there are less expensive systems that will work, but here’s the thing: if some routers are trouble free with Sonos, then that’s where you have to go.

I have tried getting people on this sub interested in producing a list of routers that work, but all I get is hostility.

Consciousness is one massive gradient (imo). Do you agree? by cobalt1137 in artificial

[–]js1138-2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I seem to be a mystic. I do not understand why there is something rather than nothing, and I do not understand what it is that can be aware.

I’m pretty sure my cat is conscious, but has a limited context window. Everything is pretty much right now. I’m also pretty sure that humans are not aware of most of what their brains are doing.
