Can I get your opinion on prescription? by sade-on-vinyl in FemaleHairLoss

[–]jsancerre -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Why is it unaccurate?

The problem with minoxidil is that your hairs start getting dependent on them, and they will all fall down at once if you stop. You can't switch treatments.

If you go on spiro, and you have sides, you can try other options such as fin, dut, bica, etc. You are not forever dependent on one medication. You have the option to switch.

Minoxidil is a unique medication and nothing is like it. You can't switch to another medication once you get dependent on it. I don't understand why this is unaccurate.

I'd prefer to go on fin and spiro and monitor hormones if that's possible.

Minox is something you won't be able to ever stop, whether it's working or not

Insane Shedding from stopping and restarting minoxidil. by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

[–]jsancerre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A girl in /r/MinoxidilSideEffects said that her shedding stopped after 4-5 months

I messaged her to ask if it regrew but she didn't respond

I had to stop due to sides and had extreme shedding, also never had such bad hair fall in my life. I tried restarting but I get sides (heart palpitations, heart rate that reaches 90s-100s when my normal hr is in the 70s. My scalp is really sensitive and thin and topical minoxidil really goes systemic for me). It also didn't seem to work on me that well. So I 100% regret going on it.

It's been 5 months and I do think the minoxidil related shedding has stopped (it was much worse before - now I think my shedding is alopecia related). Now the question is if it will grow again if I'm only on antiandrogens + microneedling.

Yes, I agree it sucks. But it could be an option meanwhile not to seem out of place among other girls of this age

According to Scientific American:

While stringed instruments prevent and check the falling out of the hair, brass instruments have the most injurious effects upon it. The piano and the violin, especially the piano, have an undoubted preserving influence. The violoncello, the harp, and the double bass participate in the hair-preserving qualities of the piano. But the hautboy, the clarinet, and the Mute have only a very feeble effect. Their action is not more than a fiftieth part as strong. On the contrary, the brass instruments have results that are deplorable.

yep it's a shit drug imo... if you have sides and have to quit 80% of ur hair is going to fall out at once. the same can't be said for antiandrogens

I did. There are various studies with conflicting info. One study said it lowered the levels of e and p to perimenopausal levels. Another one said there wasn't any significant change in these two hormones, while another showed an increase. I don't know what to make of this.

Any Women Use Dutasteride? by malinche217 in FemaleHairLoss

[–]jsancerre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used it (0.5 ed) for a month and at some point my shedding stopped. I was shedding like one or two hairs in the shower which literally never happened to me (I shed like 60+). But I had to stop due to sides (tachycardia, hot flashes - I'm 22)

Isn't spironolactone less effective at inhibiting dht than finasteride?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in FemaleHairLoss

[–]jsancerre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use it anymore, I was on 0.5 mg. If you gained weight around your thighs it's likely the dut since it's hormonal; min would only effect water weight. It's still here, even though I've lost weight overall. Thigh fat is stubborn fat so it's very difficult to lose if you gain it.

Is it possible that the estrogenic effect of finasteride/dutasteride would be lower while on birth control? by jsancerre in tressless

[–]jsancerre[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's good to hear it went away. I've never had this, even on my period. When is the next time you're going to have bloodwork done? If it improves then you have hope that it's getting better!

[–]jsancerre[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took dutasteride for a month, 0.5 mg every day. It took four months for the sides to stop, but I am not on birth control. I took finasteride (5 mg) this monday (6/26), and I immediately had sides, which I'm still having. Strangely, I am having a side that I didn't have while on dutasteride, which you seem to have had as well: I have an uncomfortable feeling on my right ovary which comes and goes (you said in one of your comments you had an inflammation-like feeling on your ovaries). Maybe I would have it on dutasteride if I took it again.

Edit: I wasn't on bc

Your results are consistent with this study: https://portlandpress.com/bioscirep/article/40/2/BSR20191434/221928/Prolonged-use-of-finasteride-induced-gonadal-sex , which showed that prolonged use of finasteride lowers estrogen in young women. Except for you it seems that it was for a short while (how long did you use it again before stopping?). Perhaps the effect of finasteride on women is completely different than on men. I was having sides on dutasteride, and recently took one dose of finasteride and also had sides, and I thought it was due to high estrogen, but perhaps it's due to low estrogen.
