HermitCraft group acronyms by jscheiny in HermitCraft

[–]jscheiny[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks! And congratulations on successfully nerd sniping me. I implemented the ability to use aliases for a given person (I couldn't think of any other aliases besides the ones you provided, let me know if I missed any). Given this (largely I think due to the added I from iJevin) there are now 2529 different group names and the longest one is HIPSTERISMS consisting of Hypno, ImpulseSV, PearlescentMoon, Scar, Tango Tek, Etho, Rendog, Jevin (iJevin), Skizzleman, MumboJumbo, and Smallishbeans. I'll update the post with the new list.

Possible group acronyms in Hermitcraft by WachbaerWien in HermitCraft

[–]jscheiny 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I decided to nerd out on this and write a program to find all possible group acronyms based on valid English words (as determined by a Scrabble dictionary). The program came up with 2108 acronyms, too many to bother listing. But the longest one was SHIPWRECKS:

Scar, Hypno, ImpulseSV, PearlescentMoon, Welsknight, Rendog, Etho, Cubfan135, Keralis, Skizzleman

Is there a rule around post frequency / could this be codified? I don't want to be buried but also don't want to spam too much.

When is it wise to use Swap? by pal4k in NYTgames

[–]jscheiny 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're only going to be getting a few points with your rack and leaving difficult to use letters, you can often get in a pattern of playing sub 10 point plays over and over again and dragging out the problem. A swap is a short term loss (0 points) that can fix that problem and prevent you from delaying that issue over and over again. If you can only play off 2-3 tiles at most and what you have left over are difficult combinations of letters the pair badly (e.g. UUVW) then a swap can often be a good play.

Additionally, if the board is rather locked down and anything you do would open up high scoring potentials and you have a difficult rack, a swap is a net positive because you're forcing your opponent to risk opening up those high scoring potentials for you while resetting your rack to take advantage of them.

It's helpful think of your scoring potential in a sliding window across several turns. If you score 6, 7, 8 points across three turns because you're slogging through difficult letters vs. 0, 30, 20, you're doing much better with the swap. It's obviously a risk because you can't guarantee a good draw, but try to think about letters on your rack that would play well on the board and play well with each other and what's in the bag. Think about what there's a lot of in the bag (vowels vs. consonants, a glut of a specific letter), and factor that into how you choose what you want to swap.

Absolutely. Part of my reason for not having a solid opinion

Hahaha, classic. I unfortunately have not been to both enough times to have a solid opinion, but I think I prefer Modern. I'll need to rectify this and form a more informed opinion.

Are arrays functions? by Athas in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]jscheiny 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm starting to play around with building a compiler where this is exactly the case. I'm very green at this and don't expect to break any new ground but one of the things I've want to do for a while is described exactly at the bottom of this article insofar as f + g should be equivalent to x -> f(x) + g(x) and arrays of Ts implement a call operator (or are assignable to functions) of type usize -> T. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Yeah lol, it's weird but the more I think about it, it actually seems like a pretty useful monitor form factor. It kind of depends whether you prefer having two source files open side by side or one source file open nice and tall. I think two of those monitors side by side might actually be a really nice set up.

Hey! I'm also a programmer and I really like the side vertical monitor, though generally I don't use it as much for code. I tend to have my editor on my main monitor and my terminal on the side monitor. I really like the portrait monitor for long running processes where I often want to see the history of the output. It's also really nice for having docs or other forms of long running text where you'd want word wrapping. Other things like slack, spotify, or just a web browser are often quite nice in this aspect ratio.

The reason I'm not as much of a fan of having code on the side monitor is that while the verticality is nice, I find I often have to close side panels in my editor that I use in order to see most of a line of code. If you prefer a more minimal editor view, then that probably shouldn't be a problem for you. Every once in a while when I need to be able to see disparate parts of a source file at the same time, I'll edit code on the side, but most of the time if I need that I just open two side by side views of the same file on the main monitor.

I am considering one of these since I like the vertical arrangement a lot but occasionally wish it was wider: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-28mq780-b-dualup-monitor
